North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile Toward Sea of Japan Amid Rising Regional Tensions
North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan (East Sea) on Thursday, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), in a move that further heightens tensions in Northeast Asia.
The JCS said the missile was detected at approximately 5:00 p.m. local time after being launched from the Wonsan coastal region on North Korea’s east coast. South Korean and allied authorities are continuing to analyze the missile’s flight characteristics and performance.
The launch came just hours after Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Japan must strengthen its military capabilities to address growing security threats posed by North Korea, China, and Russia.
A day earlier, Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, accused Japan of becoming a “belligerent state” and warned that Pyongyang could adopt “additional military options” in response to what it views as increasing regional military pressure.
The missile test also comes ahead of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises conducted by South Korea and the United States. North Korea has long condemned the drills as rehearsals for an invasion, while Seoul and Washington maintain they are defensive exercises designed to improve alliance readiness.
The latest launch is expected to draw condemnation from South Korea, Japan, and the United States, which have repeatedly called on Pyongyang to halt ballistic missile tests and return to dialogue. The incident is likely to renew concerns over regional security as diplomatic efforts to ease tensions remain stalled.
