NRPUP CHOOSE STEPHEN KAMPYONGO AS LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
The EZRA TEMBO NRPUP Members of Parliament have elected Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament, Hon. Stephen Kampyongo, as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament during a Parliamentary Caucus meeting held at Palmwood Lodge in Chudleigh on 27th September 2026.
The MPs exercised their constitutional mandate pursuant to Article 74(2) of the Constitution of Zambia, which expressly provides:
“The opposition political party with the largest number of seats in the National Assembly shall elect a Leader of the Opposition from amongst the Members of Parliament who are from the opposition.”
The decision comes amid an internal disagreement with NRPUP President Ezra Tembo, whom the MPs accuse of seeking to impose himself as Leader of the Opposition despite Article 74(2) vesting the election of the Leader of the Opposition in the opposition political party with the largest number of seats in the National Assembly.
The National Assembly Standing Orders, 2024, Standing Order 45, further provides that once the Leader of the Opposition has been elected, the party shall communicate the decision in writing to the Speaker.
The NRPUP MPs have therefore elected Hon. Stephen Kampyongo as their Leader of the Opposition.

Obviously Kampyongo is a suitable choice in the absence of Mundubile. What does Ezra Tembo know about the business of parliament? We need checks and balances in the house.
