KIBOMBWE PETITIONS LUSAKA MAYORAL ELECTION, CHALLENGES CHITAMBALA’S VICTORY
NRPUP Lusaka Mayoral Candidate Gabriel Isaac Kibombwe has petitioned the election and subsequent declaration of UPND’s Mwewa Chitambala as Mayor of the City of Lusaka following the August 13, 2026 General Elections.
Court documents seen by Zambian Watch News show that Kibombwe has commenced proceedings before the Local Government Elections Tribunal for the Lusaka District, challenging the mayoral election.
The matter is cited under Article 159(3) of the Constitution of Zambia, provisions of the Electoral Process Act, and the Local Government Tribunal Rules 2026.
Chitambala has been cited as the 1st Respondent, while the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is named as the 2nd Respondent.
In an affidavit verifying facts filed in support of the matter, Kibombwe identifies himself as the petitioner and states that he is a Zambian national competent to depose to the affidavit based on facts known to him.
The petition places the Lusaka mayoral election before the Tribunal, potentially opening another legal battle over the outcome of the 2026 elections.
The specific grounds and reliefs being sought by the petitioner will now be subject to consideration by the Local Government Elections Tribunal.
The development comes as attention remains focused on electoral petitions being filed by candidates challenging results and declarations from the just-ended elections.
The Lusaka mayoral contest has now moved from the campaign trail to the courtroom.
