Zimbabwe’s Sables made history by qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, earning praise from across the country after securing a place at rugby’s biggest tournament.
However, celebrations have been overshadowed by allegations regarding the conditions some players are reportedly facing while in national team camp.
Community leader and migrant advocate Shelton Chiyangwa says he personally visited the accommodation where some players stay and claimed the facility is so poor that players refer to it as a “ghost house.” According to his account, concerns have been raised about living conditions, unreliable electricity and the overall welfare of players preparing to represent Zimbabwe on the global stage
Chiyangwa said it is unacceptable for athletes who have achieved such a historic milestone to be living in conditions that many supporters believe do not reflect their contribution to the nation.
He has called on the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, government officials and sponsors to urgently investigate the allegations and ensure the players are given proper support and accommodation as preparations for the World Cup continue.
The claims have sparked widespread debate, with many Zimbabweans arguing that the country’s rugby heroes deserve better treatment aftesecuring qualification for one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
