Mnangagwa, Ramaphosa discuss HH’s shock election victory

0

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday held a private meeting in which the election of Zambia’s opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema as the country’s new leader among other issues became topical, The NewsHawks has learnt.

The two presidents, who both lead revolutionary parties, held a meeting on the sidelines of the Southern African Development Community 41st summit of heads of state and government in Lilongwe, Malawi.

The meeting, sources said, was attended by Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs minister Frederick Shava, Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and officials from the South African.

The election of Hichilema, according to diplomatic sources who spoke to The NewsHawks, surprised Mnangagwa and Ramaphosa who both had cordial relations with Zambia’s outgoing president Edgar Lungu.

Last week’s election was Hichilema’s sixth attempt at winning the presidency.

“The President-elect has strong connections with both Zimbabwe’s and South Africa’s main opposition parties and discussions on how revolutionary parties like the ANC and Zanu PF can consolidate their positions were discussed.

This election showed that political winds of change were ushered in by young people who are often accused of being reluctant to vote,” a source familiar with the discussions said.

“The leaders also discussed Sadc’s role in the Mozambican conflict. If you may recall last month, South Africa’s then Defence minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, expressed her displeasure on why Rwandan troops had been deployed ahead of the regional bloc. In light of this, charting the way forward thus became paramount for the two leaders.”

In July, Rwanda announced that it would put boots on the ground to help stem a conflict which has claimed thousands of lives following weeks of dithering by the regional bloc.

The conflict has also resulted in Total, a French-headquartered energy group, suspending its multi-billion-dollar energy project in the region.

Zimbabwe’s presidential spokesperson George Charamba could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.

Hichilema, who won a landslide over incumbent Lungu, has close links to Mmusi Maimane, the leader of the opposition One South Africa Movement.

The President-elect is also an associate of MDC-Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa. Mnangagwa, who had a wafer-thin lead on Chamisa in the controversial 2018 general elections, is expected to face his nemesis in the 2023 polls.

In his acceptance speech, President-elect Hichilema extended an olive branch to his predecessor who in the past had tormented him. After the 2016 election, he was charged with treason for allegedly failing to give way to the presidential motorcade.

He spent four months in a maximum-security jail before the charges were dropped.

“Don’t worry, you’ll be OK, you won’t face retribution or get teargassed,” Hichilema, who was often attacked in what he said were attempts to silence and intimidate him as an opposition leader, said.

He pledged to be the president of all Zambians, whether they voted for him or not.

In its final tally, the electoral commission said Hichilema had won 2 810 777 votes to Lungu’s 1 814 201 in last Thursday’s election. There were seven million registered voters. Newshawks

The Loss By PF In The 2021 Election Is God’s Intervention – Given Lubinda

0

…as newly appointed party National Chairperson for Information and Publicity MCC Given Lubinda highlights the outcome of yesterday’s extraordinary meeting.

LUSAKA…Sunday, August 22, 2021 (SmartEagles)

THE PATRIOTIC FRONT (PF) Central Committee has noted that the devastating loss suffered in the just ended August 2021 General election was a divine intervention by God.

Newly appointed PF National Chairperson for Information and Publicity Hon Given Lubinda has said it was for that reason that the party’s Central Comittee are in support of His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s decision in accepting the outcome of the elections.

MCC Lubinda said this during a press briefing at the PF Secretariat today following yesterday’s first extraordinary meeting after the polls.

He however noted that the elections were marred with rampart electoral malpractice, reckless violence and murders like the brutal and barbaric murder of PF North-Western Province Chairperson MCC Jackson Kungo.

MCC Lubinda said the murders were premeditated and most PF officials were accused of carrying premarked ballot papers and “our members were attacked thereby leaving our votes vulnerable and unprotected.”

“Notwithstanding these circumstances, the Central Committee are in support of President Lungu decision in accepting the outcome of the August polls. And for this reason the we hereby congratulate him for deciding not to petition the election results,” Hon Lubinda said.

He further stressed that the highest decision making body of the party also agreed with the outgoing Head of State that the work ahead and the tranquility of Zambians was too important to be subjected to court petitions.

And Hon Lubinda has said the PF Central Committee has joined President Lungu in congratulating President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND) for emerging victorious in the just ended polls.

“The PF shall respect his presidency and the authority of his office as Head of State,” Hon Lubinda said. “We in the PF shall not hinder him and his government from delivering on the promises made and fulfil their campaign promises to the Zambian people.”

Meanwhile, Hon Lubinda said the Central Committee reminded itself that the PF had lost three elections in the past before the 2011 victory but it emerged stronger from those defeats.

He said it was for that reason that the party is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that it was God’s will that the PF should lose the 2021 General election.

“Divine intervention as far as we are concerned is meant to teach us lessons. We have therefore resolved to conduct an introspection and postmortem to establish the causes of this defeat so as to strategise on how to move on the higher trajectory,” Hon Lubinda added.

He said the soon-to-be-done intropection and postmortem shall take the form of candid review of all policies, occurances, statements and all commissions or omissions made especially by those of in the Central Committee entrusted by the members with the mandate to provide leadership.

MCC Lubinda said the process shall involve all the party structures and organs adding that all the supporters and ordinary members alike would be encouraged to submit their views and no one shall be ignored and the lessons drawn from that would be necessary for the party to make amends.

“We acknowledge the fact that the members out there are grieving about this loss more than the leadership hence it is imperative that we get them involved in the process of making this introspection and conducting this postmortem.

“Our members across the country wants answers but we understand that they too have the answers because they are the wisdom of the party and we shall give them latitude for them to guide the party going forward,” Hon Lubinda said.

THE CONTINUED HARRASMENT OF PF MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS BY THE UPND iS WORRISOME -Antonio Mwanza

THE CONTINUED HARRASMENT OF PF MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS BY THE UPND iS WORRISOME

Lusaka -21st August 2021

We have noted with deep concern and sadness, reports indicating the continued harassment and beating of Patriotic Front members in communities, trading spaces and even some work places by UPND cadres and sympathisers.

It is unacceptable that over a week after elections were conducted and winner declared, spates of attacks on our members have continued and, actually increased.

We welcome the statement made by the President-Elect, His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema for communities to return to normalcy and avoid vengeful or retributive acts.

We also welcome the statement made by the UPND National Spokesperson, Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa who has cautioned their members to desist from harassing PF members and to stop the destruction of their property.

Our PF party members are living in fear and many have gone in hiding. Our offices dotted across the country are being vandalized or taken over by the UPND, despite the lease and occupational business arrangements that exist between ourselves and property owners.

We need to affirm that Zambia is a growing democracy and observes peaceful hand over of power between the winner and loser.

It is therefore unacceptable that Democracy should be defiled by these acts of violence, intimidation and destruction of property simply because the PF lost the August 12th General Election.

We also call upon the Police to tighten security measures to ensure that lives of our members and supporters are safeguarded and, property protected.

It’s important that the Police arrest the situation, so as to allow citizens to live freely and in peace without intimidation or fear for their lives.

Every Zambian has a constitutional right to belong to any political party of their choice and the UPND should not be allowed to violate this fundamental and inalienable right of every Zambian citizen.

Further, Zambia has a functional judicial system and all matters to deal with investigations and prosecutions are a preserve of competent and constitutional wings of Government hence it is wrong and illegal for any UPND cadre to try to usurp the powers of the relevant institutions of Government by taking the law into their own hands.

We advise the UPND to get down to work and focus on delivering on the many promises they made to the Zambian people instead of wasting their time on witch hunt, violence

and intimidation.

SUSPECTED UPND CADRES THREATEN TO GRAB STALLS FROM KAMWALA MARKETEERS

SUSPECTED UPND CADRES THREATEN TO GRAB STALLS FROM KAMWALA MARKETEERS

By Patricia Male and Lukundo Nankamba

Suspected UPND cadres have gone on rampage threatening some makeshift stale owners at Kawamala Market to forcibly grab their shops.

The marketers who have complained of victimization from the purported cadres have explained that the cadres are being led by Francis Mwamba who claims to be UPND ward youth chairman and is threatening violence if makeshift stale owners do not surrender their stales located near Kafue roundabout.

One shop owner James Mweenda has explained that when he passed through his shop, he was told that the shop he owns is no longer his.

Mr. Mweenda has explained that the marketers voted for President Hichilema because they were tried of victimization by PF cadres but is saddened that the alleged UPND cadres are now behaving like the PF.

The marketers have since appealed to president-elect-Hakainde Hichilema, the Lusaka City Council and the Police to quickly intervene.

Meanwhile, Patriotic Front is saddened and concerned with continued reports of harassment and beating of its members in communities and trading spaces by UPND cadres and sympathizers since the announcement of Mr. Hichilema as Zambia’s 7th president.

PF Media Director Antonio Mwanza says it is unacceptable that over a week after elections were conducted and the winner declared, spates of attacks on its members have continued and, actually, increased.

He explains that party members are living in fear and many have gone into hiding as offices across the country are being vandalized or taken over by the UPND, despite the lease and occupational business arrangements that exist between the PF and property owners.

And UPND National Youth Chairman Gilbert Liswaniso has appealed to party members to avoid victimizing PF members in markets or anywhere.

Mr. Liswaniso has further urged UPND members to avoid caderism and lawlessness despite the hardship they suffered at the hands of PF cadres while in opposition because now is time to unite the country. PHOENIX NEWS

PROSECUTE PLUNDERERS…country must be governed by laws – Chief Macha

0

By Ben Mbangu in Choma

CHIEF Macha of the Tonga people of Choma district in Southern Province says those that plundered national resources in the PF regime must be prosecuted and made to pay back.

Addressing journalists at his palace, Macha, who congratulated both Hakainde Hichilema for winning elections and President Edgar Lungu for conceding defeat, said under the previous regime laws were not followed.

“Those that plundered national resources in the PF regime must be prosecuted and made to pay back. A country must be governed by laws but what we saw under the PF regime was something else,” he said.

Macha said governments must not be only for few individuals but for all citizens.

“I want to remind the incoming government that people voted the PF out because they wanted change for everyone to live a better life and that change must be seen,” he said. “The new government must never forget that public service entails that they are servants of the people and not masters hence must not make people to dance for services they are entitled to.”

Macha said unity can only be actualised when a government does the right thing.

“Listen to what the people are saying because power is in their hands. The new administration must come up with a team of chiefs which will be advising them especially on local government,” he suggested.

Macha said there can be no harmony in a country where citizens are not consulted.

He urged the new administration to look into the plight of retirees.

“It pains me to see retirees crying for their money. Please find money to give these people, they have suffered enough,” Macha said.

He also urged the incoming government to ensure farmers were paid their money from the Food Reserve Agency in time.

“Enough is enough of these irregularities and in the same vein we are urging the new government to ensure that drugs in hospitals are there,” Macha said.

He called on Zambians to give the new administration enough time to address their challenges adding that not everything can be done immediately.

“Let the young people understand that it is not possible for any government in the world to employ everybody immediately they leave school,” said Macha. “We must tell them the truth that it is impossible to employ all youths but it is possible for a government to create a conducive environment that can enable youths to start their own businesses.”

THE TRUCKS I OWN I BOUGHT THROUGH BANK-FINANCE- FRANCIS MUCHEMWA

STATEMENT OF FACT, STOP HATING, STOP THE MALICIOUS LIES

20/08/2021

I wish to put it on record and at the same time dispel and warn all of those spreading false allegations against me to desist from doing so or face legal consequences.

I would like to inform the general public that there has been so much malice, misleading and defamatory reports making rounds on various social media platforms and being propagated by known individuals.

First of all, I do not own 6 trucks as falsely alleged but 2 whose value is US$62,000 each and not the exaggerated K2,000,000 being circulated. The trucks are owned by myself and the financing institution which actually appears as ABSOLUTE OWNERS on the white books while I appear as OWNER until I make the last instalment. I do pay for these trucks in instalments meaning it’s a facility anyone is free to access as long as they meet the conditions set by the financing institution. Further, you may wish to know that I haven’t even finished paying FAW on this purchase and the undesirable noisy and false allegations which have withdrawn the vehicles from operating will most likely result in me defaulting on the monthly installments and may consequently run me into breach of contract. Now in whose interest would all that be? I challenge all of you to kindly verify with FAW who happen to be the absolute owners of these trucks and take note of this in your records, please. I have always followed government regulations and would not want to have a negative history.

As for my lodge it’s amazing how low people could stoop just to concoct lies about someone. Honestly how naive and foolish can people be to think I can fail to build such a property on a 30X20 piece of land? Unfortunately the people who have made so much noise about these acquisitions are individuals who had more opportunities than I ever did but opted to drink and sleep in Chicagos and other luxurious apartments around Lusaka and the region at the expense of investing. I have in the last couple of years been working my lungs out to secure myself and my family and I’m sure that’s every man’s desire in life. I have engaged in various types of businesses over time just to survive and so it’s laughable how people think I can fail to save and build such a facility. I also do sell chickens among the so many other supplementary income generating activities.

The difference between me and many other youths is the fact that I’m a hardworking, focused family man and an experienced political mobilizer.

As I conclude let me also touch on the ever burning issue regarding the allegations of my involvement in the murder of Lawrence Banda in Kaoma. My hands are clean and so is my conscious over this matter and it’s very unfortunate that people can go to the highest lengths and depths to implicate me in a matter I know nothing about all out of hatred. I must set it right on record here that I own no weapon and I’ve never owned a gun. I don’t even know how to pull the trigger or operate one. It is for the same reasons that I appeal to all peace loving Zambians to dismiss these serious allegations with the contempt they deserve.

All I’ve said in this statement are facts that can be verified any day any time and I will gladly give a full account of my possessions. I do have a number of loans that I’m servicing from very reputable banking institutions to this day…

By the way, I’m a qualified Certified Chartered Accountant trained by a reputable institution of accountancy and so I’m not that typical none skilled dunderhead that most of you think of. I do have professional knowledge on business management and this you must fully understand and acknowledge.

It is also worth noting that Intercity bus terminus has always been a meeting point for political meetings and it’s also news to hear of the income loss at the facility but I have never been part of management neither have I worked for the Council to be privy to the internal issues. I have worked with Intercape as country Manager but never for the council.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate the President elect Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and tell him to be weary of defectors to UPND. They are not trustworthy and they will lie a lot and destroy his presidency if left unchecked.

The UPND youths worked very hard to push their party into government and they should be the ones that should work hard and benefit from the immediate available party opportunities, not the opportunists who specialise in aligning themselves to all parties and presidents.

I remain a servant of the people and available to respond to any objective critics and not time wasters.

Akafumba warns Kambwili not to interfere in NDC activities

Akafumba warns Kambwili not to interfere in NDC activities

IT’S extremely unfortunate that Chishimba
Kambwili has continued to interfere in the activities of the National Democratic Congress laments Josephs Akafumba.

In a statement, Akafumba said Kambwili risked being in contempt of court because he had
disregarded a court order restraining him from acting in capacity and
on behalf of the NDC.

Kambwili is believed to have called former NDC administrative secretary Edward Simfukwe instructing him to surrender all documentation of the party to him.

Simfukwe is among the many NDC members who rejoined the Akafumba faction stating that Saboi Imboela was not the legitimate
leader of the party.

Following Kambwili’s schemes Akafumba said it is unfortunate that the ‘PF cadre’ despite openly joining the former ruling party is still
masquerading as an NDC member.

“In fact we know that he is the godfather of the Saboi led group, it did not come as a sense of shock because we knew from the word go that
Kambwili has been the one sponsoring the Saboi group. It was only yesterday that some of the members of the Saboi led group decided to rejoin the good people of the NDC which is in an Alliance with the UPND. First of all we need to congratulate ourselves for the job well
done as we shamed Kambwili who claimed to be a political genius but this time he got it wrong by deciding to side with the bad people and the loss was well sounding for everybody to see,” Akafumba said.

“Among the people who rejoined the NDC is administrative Secretary Mr Edward Simfukwe but this morning Kambwili called Simfukwe and told him to surrender all the NDC documents to him because he wants to
reorganize the party. So which party is Kambwili re-oganising? Does Kambwili belong to the two parties, the NDC and PF? He has now removed the wood and has removed the mask he was wearing and has confirmed
this morning that really he is still a member of the NDC.”

Akafumba further lamented that Kambwili went ahead to threaten Simfukwe to hand over the party’s documentation as he confirmed what
was all along suspected that he put Saboi as a front and now that this was the time for him to re-organise the party.

Akafumba however warned Kambwili not to phone Simfukwe stating that
the documentation for the party were in fact with him.

“If he wants let him phone me but I want to tell him that this is contempt and we are going to bring it before the courts of law on 30th
August that this unrepentant contemnor has continued to disregard the courts of law,” Akafumba said.

He advised Kambwili to attend to his current social matters that are circulating on social media.

“He has so many problems to attend to, if he is not satisfied with PF where he is now as he is now and is the causer of their loss, let him just go and retire. We are not going to accept this continued interference by Kambwili who is a PF member. Even the PF they must know the type of person they are entertaining. I will not give him those documents because he is not and has never been part and parcel of the NDC; he was just acting in an interim capacity as president.

I am the registered vice president of the party and I am entitled at law to keep those documents. Can you please leave Simfukwe alone.

You misled the young people’s lives, you have destroyed people’s lives and others have died because of following you blindly but you still want to follow them even up to now; a Kambwili we are not going to accept
that. We have given you respect and enough is enough,” Akafumba said.

When contacted however, Kambwili initially said he had no comment but later
accused Simfukwe of having lied.

“I have no comment. Just ask him properly. I don’t know about it. Mr Simfukwe yesterday went to Mr Akafumba and obviously he has joined the
bandwagon of telling lies,” said Kambwili.

Removing President Edgar Lungu’s immunity is wrong because he has not committed any crime – Davies Mwila

0

By Ulande Nkomesha,

PF secretary general Davies Mwila says there is no need to remove outgoing President Edgar Lungu’s immunity because he has not committed any crime.

Recently, civil rights activist Fumba Chama alias Pilato said he would call for the removal of President Lungu’s immunity once Parliament convened so that he could explain how he amassed so much wealth within a short period of time.

But commenting on this in an interview, Mwila said removal of President Lungu’s immunity would be a waste of tax payer’s money because such undertakings had not yielded anything in the past.

“There is no need, they will be just wasting people’s money, tax payers’ money. [Fredrick] Chiluba was taken to court, what happened? Rupiah Banda was taken to court? So, what are they talking about? Let them just build this country. They want to shift their attention. They have to secure the promises that they made. So they want to shift their attention to Edgar Lungu? No! We will not accept that! Let them fulfil all the promises that they made. The Zambian people are waiting,” Mwila said.

He said the only thing President Lungu did was put up good infrastructure.

“Which crime did President Edgar Lungu commit? There is no crime! The only thing that President Edgar Lungu did is to put up good infrastructure, which all the UPND are benefiting. What are they going to do which Lungu didn’t do? Lungu has done almost everything, let them retrieve the economy, that is what we need. Let them create jobs that is what we need,” he said.

And Mwila said most of the PF members were living in fear of being beaten.

“First and foremost, when they were in opposition, they did condemn the PF, that we are thugs, we have cadres who harass the people, and before they are even sworn in, you are able to see what they can do. They are killing people, they are assaulting people, they are destroying property. What type of people are they? What about when they are sworn in on Tuesday, what will happen? Everyone is fearing for his life! So those are things that they said they will fight, now they have doubled times 10, because we never killed people ourselves,” Mwila said.

“Let them fulfil the promises that they made to the Zambian people, the first story that he made was that immediately he will be sworn in, the Dollar to the Kwacha will be K10, we are waiting on Tuesday. The other promise that he made was that immediately he was elected, he will sell the Presidential jet, we are waiting. There are certain promises which are long term. He said education will be free from grade one to university, we are waiting. He said the mealie meal price will come down to K50, we are waiting.”

Mwila said the PF had accepted the election defeat and was “moving forward”.

“Why beat people? Were they elected to come and beat people? No, we are in a democracy! Us, we have accepted, we are not going to petition the Presidential election, we are moving forward, we are democrats, we want to leave a legacy. President Edgar Lungu is leaving a legacy. So, we are moving forward. So let them change. The youths are waiting for jobs,” said Mwila.

Edgar Lungu Is Safe From Prosecution -John Sangwa

0

Lusaka-20th August 2021

Constitutional lawyer John Sangwa says President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is safe from any form of prosecution as he enjoys Constitutional Immunity.

He however said former Ministers and other officials have no such protection and maybe prosecuted for their suspected offences or wrongs.

Sangwa said a process to lift a former president’s immunity was strengthened and is now rigorous as stipulated in the 2016 Constitution.

Article 98 states that;

(5) Where there is prima facie evidence that a person who held the office of President or who performed executive functions
committed an offence whilst in office or during the period that
person performed executive functions, the President shall submit a report, outlining the grounds relating to the offence allegedly committed, to the National Assembly, requesting the National Assembly to remove the immunity from criminal proceedings of that person.

(6) Where the National Assembly receives a report, submitted
in accordance with clause (5), the National Assembly shall constitute a select committee to scrutinise the grounds submitted and determine whether or not there is a prima facie case, based on the grounds submitted, that warrants the removal of the immunity from criminal proceedings, and recommend its decision to the National Assembly.

(7) The person who held the office of President or who performed executive functions has the right to appear, be represented and be
heard before the select committee constituted under clause (6).

(😎 Where the Select Committee, constituted under clause (6),
recommends the removal of immunity from criminal proceedings from the person who held the office of President or who performed executive functions, the National Assembly may remove the immunity in respect of the alleged offence, by a resolution supported by a vote of not less than two-thirds of the Members of Parliament.

(9) Where immunity is removed, in accordance with clause (😎, the person who held the office of President or who performed
executive functions, shall be charged with the offence for which the immunity from criminal proceedings was removed.

(10) Where a court acquits the person who held the office of
President or who performed executive functions, of an offence for which that person’s immunity from criminal proceedings was removed, the immunity of that person shall, for all purposes, be deemed not to have been removed, without further proceedings.

Sangwa was speaking when he appeared on Radio Phoenix “Let the People Talk”.

Sangwa also cautioned the President-Elect when he assumes office next week, to be slow to fire people in the civil service and Zambia’s diplomats.

He said any dismissal should be guided by whether those individuals performed well or not.

He said people should not be fired on the suspicions that they belonged to the Patriotic Front as this would.be a repeat where suspected members of UPND were dismmised or retired in national interest.

Sangwa also dismissed proposals of a reconciliation commission or extending Amnesty to suspected criminals who could have stolen or plundered national resources.

He urged President Hakainde Hichilema to strengthen law enforcement agencies to prosecute such cases.

He also said that he performs his public advocacy work not to earn a presidential appointment or job but to serve the Republic and protect the Constitution.

Stop The Lies, The Malice And The Hatred Against Me- Antonio Mwanza

STOP THE LIES, THE MALICE AND THE HATRED AGAINST ME

19th August, 2021

Following the outcome of the 12th August general elections I have seen unprecedented heightened levels of LIES, MALICE, HATRED and PROPAGANDA being channelled at supersonic frequency against me. The idea is to demonize me, assassinate my character and raise public anger against me for crimes I have never committed.

1. “CUT MY MANHOOD IF HH WINS ELECTIONS” STORY

Let me begin by stating a simple fact that this is a FAKE story that was published by The New Vision Newspaper.

The said Newspaper APOLOGISED to me personally about this fake story of theirs but looking at the gravity of the damage this fake story has caused on my reputation, I proceeded to sue the Newspaper for damages.

The case is coming up this month and I will prove in court that the story is false and this will send a clear message to all media outlets to learn not to spread falsehoods and fake news.

2. ALLEGATIONS THAT I AM ON ZESCO PAYROLL

Again, this is another fake story being perpetuated by those whose mission is to slander my character. I am NOT and I have NEVER been on any ZESCO pay roll.

I challenge anyone to produce evidence of this falsehood. Further, I wish to beseech ZESCO Management to clear this fake and useless rumour that I have been on their pay roll.

3. CORRUPT DEALS

I have never been engaged in any corrupt deal. I have never at any time had any business dealings with Government. I have never committed any crime. I am as clean as a whistle.

4. HH HAS NEVER PAID ANY SCHOOL FEES FOR ME

For a long time now some people have been spreading falsehoods that President-elect, Mr. Hakainde Sammy Hichilema paid my school fees. I want to categorically state that President-elect Mr. Hichilema has NEVER at any time paid my school fees. I have NEVER at any time in my life gotten a coin from Mr. Hichilema.

Suffice to say that, I and President-elect Hichilema shared a very close political relationship from the time that he came in to UPND in 2006. I supported Mr. Hichilema to the hilt; I was even expelled from UNZA for my support of UPND and President-elect Hichilema. So to be lying that Mr. Hichilema took me to school when he has never at any time given me even a coin is quite painful.

5. “ANTONIO NEVER GRADUATED”

I am a graduate of the University of Zambia. Check your records.

CONCLUSION

I am a free citizen and like any other citizen of this country I have the right to freely participate in the governance of this country without any fear of retribution, injury, malice or insult. The fact that I do not support your party or your candidate should never make me your bitter enemy. These are just politics, don’t them personal.

Finally, I want to thank His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for his leadership and his indelible contribution to the development of this country.

Stop the lies, the malice, the hatred and the propaganda against me.

God bless Zambia.

PF-aligned contractor Charles Nthinda claims DEC, ACC cannot scare him

A Patriotic Front (PF) aligned contractor Mr. Charles Nthinda says he is not scared of anything concerning a probe against him because he is innocent.

Nthinda claims he has nothing to fear about UPND, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEC) or indeed any institutions because he is clean.

He said this when The Candidates asked him to comment on some government projects which he allegedly got and paid for but failed to fulfill.

VERBATIM

THE CANDIDATES:

“Mr Nthinda, good evening. We would like to inquire if you happen to own some 10 flats in Lusaka which has an underground parking lot.

We would also want to know the reason behind failure to complete the Lundazi – Chipata road despite having been paid by Tax payers.

We have recieved information from sources listing some projects which they allege you were paid for by Tax payers but that you failed to complete them.

We’re also inquiring if indeed you have any mansion built in South Africa, despite that you have not completed some projects which you were paid for.

The State House sources have said that there are several projects that have been abandoned by Mr. Nthinda under his Shachitari Projects.

Some projects that Shachitari obtained include:

1 Mumbwa town ships roads worth K171 million

2 Chinsali Gravel roads worth K90 million
3 Mbesuma water project

Meanwhile, other projects under Jonda include Pateuke Calvets worth K34 million and the Chief Mpezeni area gravel road worth K53 million.

Mr. Nthinda is the owner of Jonda Bus Services and Jonda Trucking Company which had the Monopoly of transporting fertilizer and maize for FRA throughout the country under the Patriotic Front administration.

NB: We will publish some proxy companies allegedly owned by Mr Charles Nthinda once the list is fully investigated.

HH Could Be The Saviour Zambians Have Been Waiting For, He Is Too Rich To Loot – TIZ

0

By Julia Malunga,

TRANSPARENCY International Zambia (TI-Z) president Sampa Kalungu says President-elect Hakainde Hichilema could be the saviour Zambians have been waiting for because as the wealthiest person in the country, he has no need to dent his hands with dirty and corrupt money.

And Hichilema’s spokesperson Anthony Bwalya says PF and government officials who stole from the nation’s purse will be given an amnesty to repay what they took without being prosecuted.

Speaking when he featured on Hot FM’s Hot Breakfast show, Wednesday, Kalungu said Hichilema could be the saviour the country was waiting for.

“At the moment, the most powerful person in the country is President HH. Why do I say that? He is the wealthiest person in the country. He has been at the helm of the UPND for a long time and he now has the mandate of the people. And we are thinking to him, he has a great opportunity to lead Zambia as Zambians have ever dreamt before.

He has no need to dent his hands with dirty money, corrupt money when actually the money he has at the moment, four generations, five generations can live without working. And for us, we are seeing could this be the saviour we have been waiting for in terms of running Zambia clean and we challenge him to that,” Kalungu said.

He said TIZ was satisfied with Hichilema’s stance on fighting corruption.

“Coming to the message that he spoke, I must say and confess that when I heard him speak about corruption, I felt like maybe like a guy proposing to a girl where he is saying the right things you want to hear and indeed he talked a lot about fostering a better democracy, restoring rule of law, order and also respecting human rights, liberties and all those things that we require. And for us, it sounded very well but specifically, he said he is going to fight corruption in any form and in any way and that, for us worked quite well,” he said.

“Talking about him speaking about how he is going to deal with issues of corruption, first of all I need to mention that prior to the elections, we felt that political parties were not talking enough about what they were going to do in terms of corruption when they came into power. We talked to the UPND, PF and the Socialist Party and they committed certain things with us and these are the things you are hearing from President-Elect Hakainde.”

Meanwhile, Kalungu said he hoped ministers and members of parliament would annually declare their wealth.

“One thing which we will be watching and have been pushing the PF government is about self reporting annual declaration of wealth of government officials but also political parties are very clever. When they say ‘government officials’, they will try to clarify if they mean only civil servants. You know currently, the law says government officials excluding ministers and members of parliament.

We hope you are also including ministers and MPs where they declare not only at the beginning of the term but every year, they are reporting how their wealth is increasing and allowing the Auditor General to clearly come and check this because I can declare something but then it’s self-declaration and it’s not truthful,” said Kalungu.

And when asked what the recovery operation was and how it would be achieved by the UPND government, Bwalya said it was an amnesty period to bring back what was stolen, no questions asked.

“We want to give individuals an opportunity to make peace with their country, to make peace with the Zambian people. Bring what you took to the Zambian people illegally. After that is done, it is more like what the ZRA did, they knew that people brought cars into the country illegally without paying taxes, so they said ‘we don’t want to waste time pursuing each and everyone of you, we know what you have done, so we are giving you an amnesty period come and pay taxes on the vehicles. But after that period has elapsed, we will come for you,” he said.

“This is in recognition that corruption over the past 10 years has been a US$3 billion problem per annum in this country and we always used to come here and say ‘on an annual basis, we are losing US$3 billion to corruption and a huge amount of that corruption was being perpetrated at political level by politically inclined individuals, those elected to serve in public institutions and those who are affiliated to the party in power. So we were clear that we needed to establish the right tone at the top but also part of that we were saying if we want to rapidly begin to engage this problem in a manner that was never going to be costly to the public, you have to understand that the court process route has been tried before in this country and it is hugely costly, you are dealing with crime that has become increasingly complex.”

Bwalya said after the amnesty period, law enforcement agencies would move in.

“And then obviously, after that amnesty period, then we will be saying ‘look, we have tried the best that we can or could have done to recover everything that was taken from the public purse, here is where this operation ends. From here going forward, public institutions operating independently of and where they feel and absolutely believe that there is cause for action to be pursued in the way of additional investigations, court action and other recovery mechanisms to be instituted, then that will be entirely for those institutions functioning independently to take on,” said Bwalya.

“Dealing with financial crimes is a complex issue these days, it takes a huge amount of resources both personnel and financial. We want to try something that has been tried in other countries. You can institute an amnesty where you say we recognize that corruption has been rampant over this period, all of those who may have taken a penny, ngwee or a kwacha out of the public cookie jar, you are going to be given say three months, bring what you took from the Zambian people. And then obviously the framework within which such an operation will be executed obviously will be provided to optimise results.”

No One Is Going To Mislead President HH, I Remain A Grassroot Politician Vows General Mosquito

NO ONE IS GOING TO MISLEAD PRESIDENT HH, I REMAIN A GRASSROOT POLITICIAN VOWS LISWANISO

United Party for National Development (UPND) National Youth Chairperson Gilbert Liswaniso says he is going to ensure that President -Elect Hakainde Hichilema delivers to the aspirations of the Zambian people, once sworn by Chief Justice Michael Musonda on Tuesday 24th August, 2021.

And Mr. Liswaniso has vowed to remain a grassroot politician as means of obtaining correct information on the ground for President Hichilema to act and rule for two terms, as opposed to relying on falsified information.

Speaking during a live Muvi Television Programme, Wednesday 18th August, 2021, in Lusaka, Liswaniso, a die hard UPND activist said his youths are equally ready to reunite and contribute to rebuilding Zambia.

“I do not want a position in government but remain in the party to continue working on the ground and help our President Hichilema deliver and act in the collective best interests of the 18 million Zambian people and those who turned up in large numbers to vote for change, through out the country’s 116 districts, spread in the 10 provinces,” vowed Liswaniso.

And Liswaniso said UPND Alliance partners being a law abiding party will not hesitate to help the police maintain law and order in Zambia.

Liswaniso said as a youth leader, he is alert on individuals scheming to defy the directive by President Hichilema on illegal acts.

“I have been visiting compounds and markets where youths in the name of our great party are harrasing people and some want to control bus stations and markets. Cadrerism is a thing of the past in markets, bus stations and stops. The Local authourities have taken over the responsibility and everyone is going to operate freely as a Zambian, we are different from Patriotic Front (PF) a brutal regime,” Liswaniso assured.

A straight-talking Liswaniso said it is a clear indication of sanity returning to Zambia even before President-elect Hichilema is sworn as 7th Republican President, new progressive dawn is evident.

The UPND National Youth Chairperson insisted that every Zambian is going to enjoy equal opportunities at different levels.

And Liswaniso has assured Zambians of continued peace and existence as a nation embracing diverse interest groups and communities.

“Everyone is protected from any form of harm especially among political players.
Reports that UPND members are terrorising PF cadres is not true. l can tell you that they are just fighting among themselves because of losing the election they should just move on.

l remember in 2016, after the general elections, PF would come at my place of work and residence to mock my family and singing mockery songs such as HH amwa Doom’ l never reacted but moved on peacefully to mobilise the party they should also move on,” recollected Liswaniso.

HH tells ambassadors: you’re free to talk to anyone, ask about our leadership and no one will ask you why

By Speedwell Mupuchi

YOU are free to meet and talk to anyone and ask about our leadership and no one from our end will call you to ask why, President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema has told diplomats.

The President this morning met four diplomats accredited to Zambia.

These are Germany Ambassador Anne Wagner-Mitchell, Finland’s Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury, and Sweden’s Antonio Maggiore.

During the meeting, the President-elect assured the diplomats that under his administration, human rights, freedoms and liberties would be guaranteed.

He also indicated to them that they were free to engage with any citizen, including the opposition, in order to get views on how he was governing the country.

“The President-Elect is confident that when human rights, freedoms and liberties are upheld, the country will attract investment and goodwill and in turn promote his economic vision,” according to a statement issued by his press secretary Brian Mwiinga.

“You are free to meet anyone, talk to any one and ask about our leadership and no one from our end will call you to ask why because we will ensure total freedom for our citizens while delivering economic development as that is what they voted for,” said His Excellency, the President-Elect, during the closed door meeting held at His Residence in Lusaka today.”

President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema Wrote;

This morning we had a meeting with Ambassadors Mrs Anne Wagner-Mitchell of Germany, Mrs Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury of Finland, Ms Anna Maj Hultgård of Sweden, and Ambassador Antonio Maggiore of Italy.

We discussed issues of mutual interest and encouraged them to engage with Zambian people from all walks of life.

Our renewed commitment to human rights, and individual freedoms, and liberties will once again restore Zambia to it’s rightful place as a bastion of freedom and stability in the region.

During our tenure in office, citizens will live free from political threats because that is what democracy requires of us.

Further, a society where human rights are respected, can and will be a catalyst for economic development as people engage in meaningful debates and economic activities, knowing that their life and property are protected.

In the interest of our country, we will continue with these bilateral and multilateral talks, with a strong focus on building an economy which provides jobs, food, and positive change for all Zambians.

May God bless our country.

BA UPND, ACCEPT ANY OF US PF YOUTHS IN YOUR PARTY AT YOU OWN PERIL…,BUT ROYD.
———————————————————————————

It is with so much SHAME that I saw a number of my fellow PF Youths defecting to UPND even before The President Elect is sworn in. But it’s a lesson to take home for our Leaders NOT ONLY in the Patriotic Front but all political parties alive today. One being the bigest question as to why a son/daughter would want to leave the House THIS QUICK if at all he/she was well looked after and the family has some sort of light at the end of the tunnel. That’s food for thought and indeed a story for another day.

Mine here today is to talk about Royd Moonga’s case. A brother that defected a few months before the person he lived half his life almost dying for has come to form government.
I will admit that for a period we’ve been with Royd in PF , one would notice how much embedded HH’s ideologies are in him. His joining PF was purely out of bitterness and frustration.

I can’t help but feel his pain. You work so hard almost your whole life for a cause then JUST AT THE BLINK OF SUCCESS, YOU QUIT. 😢

UPND Youth Chairperson Liswaniso Gilbert, Please my brother , look into Royd’s case. You know how weak he is deep down. Plead with leadership that you take you son back. I can confirm that he is in bad shape. Mweleleniko 🙏🏾

Nganifwebo muletutambilafye Nokutali 😂🤣😂

PS:
Us PF Youths are fond of backbiting and false trade of information just to survive. A majority of us are spoilt seeds with potential to mess it all up.
Be very careful who you will decide to embrace. Love us from a distance if you can.

Otherwise THIS IS YOUR VICTORY, YOUR TIME AND INDEED YOUR CAKE TO ENJOY EVEN AS YOU DELIVER ON YOUR PROMISES TO THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE.

President elect said “Pick your score cards and start marking … we shall raise the bar”

So we are on it!

HH – My Honest Thoughts

0

By Laura Miti

Not long after President Lungu’s re-election in 2016, I posted that he completely lacked the skill set to rule Zambia. A little later, I stated that he frightened me because I thought, unlike his predecessors, he did not have Zambia’s interests at heart.

Most comments suggested that I was judging the President without giving him a chance to prove himself. I quietly agreed that I might be convicting the man without trial. Try as I might, though, I could not ignore the deep sense of trepidation at Edgar Lungu being in State House.

Anyhow, we survived, if just barely.

I say that only to contextualise my thoughts on the incoming President. I have no intentions of harping on President Lungu’s injurious reign going forward – except to make a point.

Like I did with EL, I will share my pre-perfomance sense of Hakainde Hichilema, as President. We will then see how it plays out.

In simple terms, I find I trust HH’s motivations. I think he wants to advance Zambia’s good. I also think he has depth of character, is a natural leader and technically strong. If it all depended on him, therefore, my sense is we could expect Zambia to be significantly better than where it is now, at the end of his term.

But it isn’t all in his hands, is it?

You see, President Hichilema comes into office via the vehicle of the UPND party. Now, my reading of the new ruling party is that it is, in the main, a mirror image of the outgoing one. UPND and PF – same, same.

Just observing the party from outside, it is evident that UPND has no shortage of individuals whose only motivation for entering political office is to acquire personal wealth. Simply, the core of UPND is as rotten as PF’s was.

Add to that, that there is already a stampede of individuals whose politics are highly distasteful migrating to the UPND from PF MMD and the bushes. They want to continue being connected to the treasury pipeline.

Then, we have the rank and file of the UPND. They, sadly, learnt all the bad habits from PF. Just see how ready they were to take up the places in markets and bustops and, without missing a heart beat, begin to collect illegal taxes from citizens. They have annoyingly put up UPND flags all over😒.

All I am saying is, I think we have a good President in HH. To get anywhere, he, however, will have to clean up both his party and the larger nation.
Mr Hichilema has to make some tough decisions as to who he includes in his core team.

More importantly, once he sets up Cabinet, he will have to watch like a hawk over his Ministers PSes and their connected, to prevent a new set of mansions going up everywhere.

I will end by saying that, for me, a successful Hichilema presidency will concretely change the situation at the very bottom of our society. I want feeder roads graded, class sizes in government schools reduced, fertiliser for subsistence farmers provided efficiently, basic medicine in government clinics, boreholes sank in villages to reduce the hours women spend looking for water.
Small matters that would make a big difference for the majority.

In short, I want a change of government to positively impact the poor, for once. It is for the poor that I voted HH.

I pray he does not dissapoint me.

ABSA Zambia expects BoZ Governor to be replaced, Kwacha to appreciate to K15.0 per dollar

0

AbSA Zambia says it expects Bank of Zambia Governor Christopher Mvunga to be soon replaced by the incoming government.

In a brief analysis, the bank says Mr Mvunga is expected to be replaced very soon.

“The same is expected with other presidential appointees (Security wings, Permanent secretaries, Secretary to the Treasury, Utility Company chief executives, NAPSA, ZRA etc,” the bank said.

It said this is a usual trend whenever there is a change of government.

“Significant structural and some policy changes are expected in the government agencies. Financial and budgetary reforms as we head into the budget season are also expected,” it said.

“It will be key to see the 2022 national budget to be presented in October this year.”

ABSA Zambia also said that removal of middlemen in the fuel and agriculture sector that added little value but increased government cost in Crude oil importation and Fertilizer Support Programme is expected.

“Reforms in the FX Market are expected to come – Mineral royalty taxes and other mining statutory obligations may be collected in ZMW once again allowing increased FX supply on the market which will support the Kwacha.”

It said further direct Central Bank intervention to force a Kwacha appreciation like the one observer during run up to elections will stop.

“The Kwacha is expected to appreciate against the US Dollar in the short to medium term from the current 19.3 to 15.0 on the back of positive market sentiment/investor confidence,” it said.

It stated that the UPND government is projecting a rate of 10.0 USD/ZMW.

“The offshore investors that sold USD and bought Zambian government bonds in the last 2 to 3 months at yields averaging 34% are expected to continue aggressively participating in the auctions.”

It added, “We have already noted offshore investors trying to sell dollars today and position to buy more bonds in the next auction, implying a rally in the bond market.”

“The dollar flows will help support the kwacha appreciation and interest rates are expected to start going down (full shift of the yield curve which will filter to other market interest rates). We expect market rates to drop 400 – 500 basis points on average in the short term,” It said.

“The BOZ Bond Buy-Back program that had commenced last year is likely to be stopped despite it having been planned for the full year 2021. The continuation of this will depend on the objectives of the new Governor and Minister of Finance. Public expenditure tightening and close monitoring and accountability is expected.”

ABSA Zambia noted that IMF Programme implementation is expected to resume with some measure of confidence in the governance system.

“A fully funded program is expected and the new government will utilize the $1.4 billion SDR which may most likely be used to boost FX reserves. There’s also an expectation that the IMF program will be concluded in the very short term and at a faster pace than was the case with the previous government.”

It also anticipates that rating agencies will improve Zambia’s rating (from Junk) and outlook in the medium term as the political risk is reduced and with a funded IMF program on board.

“A review of mining tax regime which has been poised to offer huge concessions to the mining corporates at the expense of personal income tax as the new government endeavors to empower the masses.”

Once Parliament Convenes …we Will Demand For Lifting Of Lungu’s Immunity – Pilato

0

By Ulande Nkomesha,

CIVIL rights activist Chama Fumba, alias Pilato, says Zambians still want answers regarding the crimes committed by the outgoing government.

In an interview, Fumba said once Parliament convened, he and other civil rights activists would demand the removal of President Edgar Lungu’s immunity.

“Peace should not come at the extent of justice. When the President spoke about peace, we don’t have a problem with that peace, we want peace, we want to be nice to them.

But if you get injured in a fight, that injury will stay even when you have sobered up. So, the crimes that were committed against the people of this country will still need answers, I am sure that the President knows that.

The people of Zambia still want to understand what happened; the people of Zambia still want to understand who gassed us? They still want to understand where the ambulances are, who bought the 42 trucks and at what cost,” Fumba said.

“So, the people of Zambia still want answers to critical things and questions that they raised. I am sure the President was clear in his address; he did say that we will let the law take its course. Once Parliament opens our first demand of our President and our first demand from Parliament is that the immunity is lifted from President Lungu.”

Fumba added that President Lungu presided over a government that had decentralised corruption.

“President Lungu was presiding over a government that had decentralised corruption. Everybody was stealing from all angles. We don’t want to create a precedence that we can steal and go scot-free after you have left power.

We want every coin, every Kwacha that has been spent, that has been stolen to be accountable. That demand will go all the way, if it means people getting arrested, they will get arrested, so that we protect the dignity of public service,” Fumba said.

“All those that work in the public service must know that at some point they will be held accountable. So that is a process that we are ready to stick to and should Parliament open, we will demand that his immunity is lifted.

We the people of Zambia are allowed to understand what really happened, how much money was stolen from us, and how much was given to who and where.”

Fumba said every former civil servant that participated in corrupt activities should be held accountable.

“Because the sitting President had neglected his responsibilities to protect the interests of our people, the President had neglected his responsibility to protect the resources of this country, he had presided over a corrupt government. So, what we are saying is that the President should be the starting point.

How did he let the Minister of Health procure defective condoms and expired medicines? What was his position? Why did he [not] punish those that conducted that trade? So, we will start from the President going down to every Minister, to every councillor, to every Jim and Jack that participated in the looting of our resources. That is the process,” said Fumba.

Gary Nkombo………surely a rising star in UPND!

0

Gary Nkombo………surely a rising star in UPND!
After putting up a sterling performance at the Mulungushi International Conference Center (the national totaling center for the just ended Presidential and general elections) Gary has defied all odds and emerged as a rising star in UPND. He’s not only charismatic and articulate, but also quick to stand up in the face of injustice!

Where many would easily cower into a corner and whimper like a drenched goat in the face of the mighty ECZ, Gary chose to take the risk and wrestle the marauding bull! What are we implying?

Once it became apparent that ECZ was on course to start announcing bogus results as was the case during the 2016 general elections, Gary sprang to his feet and wondered whether it was in order for ECZ to start announcing unverified results for Chasefu constituency in Eastern province contrary to what other stakeholders had with them.

After a heated exchange of words between him and ECZ, the commission finally budged and quickly retreated to the chambers as questions from stakeholders continued landing on their backs like tornadoes!

The drama didn’t end there! During another session, Gary boldly found his way to the mike and challenged the commission why they had deducted some votes for HH from Mazabuka and allocated the same to Andyford Banda of PAC.

“For us every vote counts in these elections,” he emphasized. ECZ was caught with pants down once again!
Even when the entire Vice Chairperson attempted to reprimand and intimidate him, Gary remained unshaken.

“Do not patronize me. I am not playing to the gallery but simply stating facts,” he dared the emotionally charged vice chairperson.

In a nutshell, Gary’s tenacity to take on ECZ has him to the masses. Everywhere you go; at churches, in the bars, minibuses, markets, barbershops, shops, work places……everyone is talking about him.

“Gary is the real deal!” “Gary kapondo!” “Gary has saved the UPND from being robbed of victory!” “Gary mwaume!” “Gary ni nshimbi!”

While we are all mulling over this, I would like to remind everyone that Gary’s commitment to the aspirations and ideals of UPND has been unwavering over the years even as the previous corrupt regime dangled countless pieces of gold and silver in his face on several occasions.
I would personally attest to Gray’s loyalty to HH. Just after UPND was robbed of victory in the just ended 2016 general elections, a frenzied conversation erupted on social media. Suggestions were being floated back and forth that perhaps time had come for HH to step aside for the likes of Gary.

I was fortunate enough to bump into Gary that time around at a private function somewhere in North western province.

“Hon. Nkombo I hope you’ve seen what people are saying on social media. They are suggesting you should consider taking over from HH if he loses the next coming elections,” I said to him after we had finished exchanging the greeting formalities.
“You know what my friend,” he looked at me thoughtfully. “Loyalty defines a man, I can never betray HH no matter what!”

He then went on to give a catalogue of how HH has been of help personally to him and his family for many years. That marked the end of our conversation.

Thanks Gary!

ELECTIONS: THE BIG ONE

0

Pastor George Mwansa

It’s exactly a week today since Zambia went to the polls. All who live in Zambia now know that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema will soon be crowned as Zambia’s Seventh president having won the election in a landslide fashion by almost sixty percent of the votes cast. His closest rival, incumbent president, Edgar Lungu obtained just slightly over thirty-eight percent of the vote. If you care about numbers, Hichilema’s vote count translates to 2, 810, 777 while that of Lungu to 1, 814, 201. These votes were obtained from all but one of the 156 Constituencies in Zambia.

The total number of registered voters, according to the Electoral Commission of Zambia was 7, 023, 499. Although there were sixteen presidential candidates, in the end the knife-edge election turned out to be a two-horse race between Mr. Hakainde and Mr. Lungu. The third placed contestant, Harry Kalaba obtained a paltry 24, 879 way below even the invalid votes which numbered 124, 906. The majority of voters were young people in their twenties.

Zambia currently has a population of almost 19 million people. It’s quite clear from this statistic that there was a big number of eligible voters who may not have registered for whatever reasons. Of course others like my girls Rebekah and Rachel Luyando couldn’t vote because they are under age.

Elections are an important tenet in a democracy where the government is deemed to be of the people and for the people. It is the one time when people express their opinion of who they want their leaders to be. The next time such an event will happen is in 2026 if Jesus doesn’t come by that time.

This 2021 election is a reminder for me about the big one looming just ahead of us. That particular one will involve all the 195 nations of the world. Two leaders are in contest. One is a rebel leader named Lucifer who transformed himself into Satan, a ruthless prince of darkness. The other is Jesus Christ, Prince of peace who died to bring freedom to all who were held captive by Satan.

Satan’s manifesto has been presented very clearly. He, for example, doesn’t hide the fact that he is a liar, and a murderer. He doesn’t hide the fact that hate resides in his soul. He is very clear about the fact that he is a destroyer. Of course there are times when he hides his true identity in order to deceive people. But those who follow Prince Emmanuel know him for who he really is. He can’t hide his true colours. Like a lion, he is always out there looking to find someone to devour. Knowing that his time to the end is short, he is angry and wants to capture as many to his side as he can. He is aware of his final end in the Lake of fire but he doesn’t want to go there alone.

The Prince of peace’s manifesto is clearly written in a book called the Bible. He demonstrates His love for all people by coming down from heaven to live a selfless life in order to serve and save all humanity; all who would believe in Him. To secure the release of every human being, He takes upon Himself the guilt of all mankind and dies on a tree He Himself created. Through that death, every captive of Satan is offered pardon. The door to the prison house is swung open and all who wish to come out are free to do so. Unfortunately not many take His offer of freedom.

But the big day is soon to be upon the entire world. It will be the mother of all elections. Everyone will decide which leader they want. All ballot papers in that election are valid. No vote goes to waste. There is something beautiful about that election. We know the Winner of that election. In the election of last week between Mr. Lungu and Mr. Hakainde we didn’t know who the winner was until the votes were counted. In the global one ahead of us, King Emmanuel, the Lord of lords and King of kings is the Victor.

In the Zambian election of last week won by Mr. Hichilema we wait to see how Bally will fix it. In the global one ahead of us, Emmanuel, Jesus, has already fixed everything. Every house is ready for occupation by those who have put their vote on Emmanuel. Before He left for heaven, after that titanic battle at the cross, He made a promise to His followers to come back again: “I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3).

Everything in heaven where He is right now is fixed with the perfection of divine touch. The glorious City of God is adorned with mansions of splendor and streets of gold. There’s no congestion there. There is no load shedding there. There’s no tribalism and racism there. There’s no cadrerism there. There’s no pollution there. cancer, ebola and every disease you can think of don’t exist there.

There aren’t any heartaches and disappointments there. There’s no pain there. No death there in heaven.

Here, Bally Hakainde Hichilema doesn’t know the majority of those who voted for him. But the eternal One, the King of Kings and Lord of lords, knows every single one of His people. I can’t wait to see my Saviour and King, the One who died to secure my release. The BALLY, Jesus, who has fixed it all.

Remembering Levy Mwanawasa

By Sishuwa Sishuwa

On 19 August 2008, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, the third President of Zambia, died in a French hospital after reportedly suffering a stroke.

Thirteen years later, Mwanawasa remains as vivid in death as he was in public life. He is widely regarded as one of Zambia’s most effective leaders, who secured debt relief, steered the country through a period of sustained economic growth, promoted constitutionalism and the rule of law, and consolidated the country’s democratic tradition.

Although many people know him as president, the presidency was simply the ultimate platform on which Mwanawasa enacted important values whose origin lay in his early life and which define his legacy.

These include the importance of family and community, a deep love for learning and growing, capacity for effective and selfless leadership, loyalty to principle, moral force of character, faith in one’s fellow human being, and the proactive use of the law as a shield for the weak and ordinary citizen and not as a sword for the elite and the powerful.

Throughout his life, Mwanawasa consistently gave expression to these ideals, starting with his formative years.

Birth and early years

The second born in a family of six, Mwanawasa was born on September 3, 1948 in the mining town of Mufulira on the Copperbelt.

His parents were Myria Mokola and Patrick Chipokota Mayamba Mwanawasa, who was working as a domestic employee to a mine captain before he later established himself as a successful businessman.

Mwanawasa went to Arusha Primary School in Luanshya in 1958. He then attended Fiwale Mission school before proceeding to Chiwala Secondary in Ndola, where his leadership qualities were first noticed by the school authorities who appointed him Head Boy in 1969, the year when he completed Grade 12.

While at Chiwala, an English lawyer, Jack Dare, and Julius Sakala, the first black Town Clerk of Ndola City Council, came to the school to give lectures on career choices. It was these talks that greatly influenced the career of Mwanawasa.

His former schoolteachers, according to Amos Malupenga’s book, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa: An Incentive for Posterity, recalled an ambitious young man who told them that he wanted to become “a big solicitor to serve people”.

A student leader

After completing secondary education, Mwanawasa joined Ndola City Council as a trainee cadet under the leadership of Sakala, the Town Clerk who would later go on to become a distinguished member of the Zambian bar. Impressed with his hard work and keen to buttress its legal department, the council sponsored Mwanawasa to study law at the University of Zambia (UNZA) in 1970 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree three years later.

While studying at UNZA, Mwanawasa’s leadership qualities were further developed when he was elected Vice-President of the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU), a platform that gave him an early opportunity to hone his political skills and appreciate the importance of fostering competitive democracy.

His UNZASU executive negotiated for the introduction of the National Youth Service initiative, a six-month military-like training programme that saw school leavers and university students taught various skills aimed at instilling discipline, fostering national unity, building patriotism and enhancing their occupational abilities.

A leading lawyer

Following his completion of legal studies, which included passing the qualifying courses at the Legal Practice Institute (now known as the Zambia Institute for Advanced Legal Education – ZIALE) at first attempt, Mwanawasa worked as an assistant at Jacques and Partners, a prominent private law firm under the leadership of distinguished lawyers like John Mwanakwatwe and Willa Mung’omba. He remained at the firm from 1975 to 1978 when he formed his own law practice, Mwanawasa and Company.

The development of his leadership qualities was given another boost when he was elected as vice-president of the Law Association of Zambia in 1982. President Kenneth Kaunda noted Mwanawasa’s growing profile and, seeking to utilise his talents for wider public good, appointed him as Solicitor General in 1985. The two however differed over what Mwanawasa characterised as the practice of detaining people without trial, prompting the President to dismiss him a year later.

Mwanawasa’s star rose sharply over the course of the 1980s, developing from a young advocate to a leading lawyer who successfully defended prominent dissidents of one-party rule and high-profile suspects like then Zambia Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) Chairman-General Frederick Chiluba and treason-accused former army commander, Lieutenant General Christon Tembo.

A pro-democracy leader

After 17 years of one-party rule, calls for the re-introduction of multiparty politics gained considerable momentum in the second quarter of 1990.

The two prime organisers were Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika, then chairperson of the Economics Association of Zambia, and Mbita Chitala, who, on July 20 that year, established the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) as a pressure group to campaign for the return of multiparty democracy in a forthcoming referendum.

Other notable figures who were present at the MMD’s founding meeting at Garden House in Lusaka included Edith Nawakwi, Muna Ndulo, Fred M’membe, Baldwin Nkumbula, Simon Zukas, Katele Kalumba, Arthur Wina (who was chosen as the leader of the interim national committee), Chiluba (operations and mobilisation chairperson), and Vernon Mwaanga (information and publicity chairperson).

Mwanawasa was elected in absentia as MMD chairperson for the legal committee, but he flatly rejected the honour, unhappy that he was not consulted. After great persuasion from his wife, Maureen Kakubo, he reluctantly accepted and went on to offer free legal services to the civil society organisation.

In September 1990, President Kaunda canceled the referendum and subsequently signed the law that paved the way for the creation of more political parties other than the governing United National Independence Party (UNIP).

The MMD transformed itself into a political party on 4 January 1991. At the party’s inaugural convention in February 1991, Mwanawasa, in another public show of confidence in his leadership qualities, was elected MMD vice-president with 63.3 percent of support, defeating Nkumbula and Tembo. Of particular importance was that he had initially refused to stand for any position, declaring that “I want to go back to my practice because we have achieved what we wanted. Dr Kenneth Kaunda has agreed to revert to multiparty democracy and to me that is an achievement, so I want to go back to my practice.”

It took other people, mainly a group of educated and reform-minded professionals such as Kalumba, Dean Mung’omba, Robert Sichinga, Mathias Mpande, Gilbert Mudenda and Chitala, who, in recognition of his impressive character traits, persuaded him to change his mind and put forward his name for election. As Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika recalled in Malupenga’s book, “we put forward Levy Mwanawasa as our candidate for the vice-presidency. He did not propose his name. We thought if the MMD’s dreams had to be realised, a grouping of individuals of that character was necessary. We were saying if UNIP was dictatorial, then we needed to be more democratic. We wanted a leadership that was different from the past.” Chiluba, overcoming competition from three others, was elected party president.

Earlier, President Kaunda, responding to popular demands for an early election, had cut short his five-year term, which was due to end in 1993, and set general elections for October 1991. The MMD, featuring as the main opposition challenger, went on to defeat UNIP in an election that saw Mwanawasa elected as member of parliament for Chifubu constituency in Ndola. Chiluba, the party’s presidential candidate, defeated Kaunda and, after he took office on 2 November, named a Cabinet that included Mwanawasa as Zambia’s vice-president.

The vice-president who resigned on principle

On 8 December 1991, barely a month in power, Mwanawasa was involved in a road traffic accident after his vice-presidential motorcade collided with another car that was driven by Godwin Chirwa, an official from State House and a designated driver of the then First Lady. The cause of the accident was inconclusive. A Commission of Inquiry that was appointed to investigate the issue found that Chirwa was in a drunken stupor when the mishap happened. Unfortunately, Chirwa himself was found dead in unclear circumstances four days before he was due to give testimony in court about the cause of the accident. As well as claiming the life of Mwanawasa’s aide-de-camp, Brown Mwale, the accident left the vice-president with severe injuries that required specialised treatment in South Africa.

Mwanawasa continued to serve as vice-president until 3 July 1994 when he resigned his Cabinet position in protest against growing levels of corruption in government and the lack of transparency and accountability. “It is not often that a vice-president of a country resigns,” Mwanawasa wrote in his letter of resignation to President Chiluba, but “if my resignation will serve to shake this government into realising the implication of the behaviour of some of our ministers, which basically goes unpunished, my action will have served a useful purpose to our party and this nation.” He retained his MMD membership and parliamentary seat.

In December 1995, the former vice-president unsuccessfully challenged president Chiluba for the leadership of the MMD before he chose not to defend his parliamentary seat in the 1996 elections. He retired from active politics that year and returned to private law practice, where he remained successful over the course of the 1990s.

In July 2001, following the collapse of President Chiluba’s third term bid, Mwanawasa learnt that Chiluba was considering nominating him as his successor and immediately set out to reject the plans. “When I received information that the MMD wanted to have me as their presidential candidate”, Mwanawasa is quoted as saying in Malupenga’s book, “I went to see Dr Chiluba and said ‘I hear that this is what is being contemplated, but I am not interested. If the party needs any opinion from me, I am able to offer that, but I am not interested in party politics’.” It took over a week of persuasion to convince him to change his mind and accept the invitation. Influenced by Chiluba, the MMD National Executive Committee subsequently elected Mwanawasa as the party’s presidential candidate. In this intra-party poll, he defeated then Vice-President Enoch Kavindele, MMD National Secretary Michael Sata, Minister of Presidential Affairs Eric Silwamba, former Minister of Finance Emmanuel Kasonde, and Minister of Defence Chitalu Sampa.

A champion of good governance, democracy, and economic reform

Mwanawasa took office as President of Zambia in January 2002 after defeating ten other candidates in the 27 December 2001 election. He immediately set out a clear vision for his presidency in a mission statement where he pledged to “provide continuity with change. In the interest of our Nation, Zambia, and the common good, sacrificing all and expecting little in return, I wholeheartedly commit myself…to serve Zambia and Zambians to the best of my ability with loyalty, honour and integrity with all my heart and strength, with love and justice, with consideration and compassion, with commitment and dedication and in collaboration with all stakeholders, women and men of goodwill, to give fresh hope to our people, to create opportunities for all and bring honour, dignity and prosperity to our country, through honest selfless hard work above and beyond the normal call of duty.”

Over the course of the next five years, Mwanawasa, in another move that demonstrates the meaning of competent leadership, put together the right subordinates with the required knowledge, skills, discipline and judgement to help him achieve or bring about the desired results. For instance, he appointed to public office principled and talented individuals such as N’gandu Magande (arguably Zambia’s best Minister of Finance), Caleb Fundanga (Bank of Zambia Governor), Mundia Sikatana (Minister of Agriculture) and Mumba Malila (Attorney General). Mwanawasa also carefully ensured that his appointments to public office reflected the ethnic diversity of the country. Tongas, Bembas, Chewas, Kaondes, Lozis, Lundas and Luvales all found room in his Cabinet. This commitment to fostering a sense of national inclusion was further shown in his choice of the four different individuals he appointed to the position of Vice President of Zambia, starting with Enoch Kavindele in 2002, followed by Nevers Mumba in May 2003, Lupando Mwape in October 2004, and Rupiah Banda, who replaced Mwape after the latter lost his parliamentary seat in the 2006 general election. Such a high turnover of vice presidents demonstrated the willingness of President Mwanawasa to take responsibility whenever required and nurture alternative leaders by exposing them to positions of greater responsibility.

In addition to rehabilitating, maintaining and building new public infrastructure, with clear project selection and high priority investments, Mwanawasa’s government also instituted a number of important policy reforms such as decentralisation and an anti-corruption campaign that saw the prosecution of several former government figures, including his predecessor.

Mwanawasa inherited a poorly performing economy. Among the issues that he had to grapple with was the mass unemployment that had resulted from redundancies from privatisation and the liquidation and closure of over 250 state enterprises. Others were soaring inflation, high interest rates and the devastating consequences of the January 2002 decision by Anglo-American Corporation to pull out of Zambia’s mining industry due to the declining price of copper, the country’s biggest export earner. The government’s attempts to reverse the economic decline were severely undermined by a staggering external debt amounting to US$6 billion, which condemned Zambia to the classification of a Highly Indebted Poor Country. Under the leadership of Mwanawasa, the MMD moved to revive the economy in three main ways.

First, his government prioritised food security by enhancing its support to agriculture. For instance, Mwanawasa made the Farmer Input Support Program (formerly the Fertiliser Support Program) a cornerstone of Zambia’s agricultural policy, one that helped to increase private sector participation in agricultural input markets and improve household food security. He also launched the winter maize project, which turned out to be a success in addressing critical food shortage especially after he rejected the importation of genetically modified maize consignments from the United States of America on the grounds that the food could be harmful to human beings and the environment.

Second, Mwanawasa’s administration resuscitated the mining industry, which had been in freefall since the 1970s, by bringing new investors mainly from Canada, Europe and China. As well as generating significant revenue in form of taxes for the government, the move led to job creation and the revival of the industrial Copperbelt. Third, in an effort to qualify for debt relief as prescribed by the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, Mwanawasa presided over the implementation of deeply unpopular but necessary austerity measures, including a one-year wage freeze on civil servants’ salaries, a significant increase in taxes, a halt in hiring public service labour and reduced funding to social services.

While the President defended the implementation of the new structural adjustment policies as essential to economic recovery, the opposition, led by the Patriotic Front (PF)’s Michael Sata, cited them as evidence of a government that was unresponsive to the concerns of urbanites and promised to deliver (without explaining how) better working conditions such as “lower taxes, more jobs and more money” in people’s pockets. The net result of Mwanawasa’s policies was the near-total cancellation of Zambia’s foreign debt in 2005. The considerable resources freed from debt repayments enabled the government to tackle unemployment and invest in key social sectors such as education, agriculture and health.

Another area that became the focus of the government under Mwanawasa was constitutional reform. In 2003, he worked with civil society to constitute a broadly representative Constitution Review Commission (CRC), headed by Willa Mung’omba, that was tasked to collect views from the public for constitutional amendment and recommend the best mode of adopting the new constitution. The CRC completed its work in 2005, but the constitutional reform process was not concluded until after President Mwanawasa’s death.

Mwanawasa’s first term was however not without its challenges. For instance, his 2001 victory was the subject of an election petition that dragged on until February 2005 when the Supreme Court dismissed it. Lacking a clear majority in parliament, Mwanawasa sought to address the problem by co-opting into Cabinet several articulate opposition MPs such as Sylvia Masebo and Dipak Patel, consequently earning criticism that he was undermining the capacity of the opposition to control the already dominant executive and modify its policy proposals. The nomination of Mumba, a losing presidential candidate in the 2001 elections, to the position of Vice-President attracted the ire of the then main opposition United Party for National Development (UPND), which argued that the move violated the constitution’s prohibition of any person being appointed to the National Assembly if they had been a candidate in the preceding general election. In view of this, the UPND moved an impeachment motion against Mwanawasa, one that he survived in August 2003 after members of parliament voted 92-57 against it.

His leadership of the MMD was also tenuous and it was not until July 2005 that he was elected party president, having occupied the position in an acting capacity since 2002. In addition, the attempted deportation of Post newspaper satirist Roy Clarke in January 2004, on the allegation that the white British national who had lived in Zambia since 1962 had insulted the President and his ministers, attracted criticism that Mwanawasa was trying to undermine free speech. In a show of judicial independence that was characteristic of Mwanawasa’s presidency, the High Court quashed the deportation order of the then Minister of Home Affairs, Ronnie Shikapwasha. Notwithstanding the Clarke incident, Mwanawasa remained mostly supportive of media freedom, tolerated political debate, and refused to curtail the mobilisation activities of opposition parties and civil society.

On a personal level, Mwanawasa radiated elegance and grace, basic rectitude, authentic love for family (even in its extended structure), care and respect for the dignity of others, and wisdom in judgement. Together with Maureen, he raised his children well and taught them never to be corrupt or extend their hands to public coffers. Despite his demanding public office commitments, Mwanawasa made time for his wife, children and best friends, showing by example that family and community are more important than wealth and status. Tragedy also occasionally befell him. He suffered a minor stroke in April 2006, two months before his mother died in June. The President recovered and won a second term in September 2006. He continued with many of the progressive reforms that he had initiated in his first term in office, centred on service delivery, spearheading economic reform, enhancing food security, creating more jobs, supporting the fight against corruption, and the promotion of good governance, constitutionalism and the rule of law.

When Sata, who had been at loggerheads with the president since their time in the MMD in the early 1990s, suffered a heart attack in April 2008, Mwanawasa, consistent with his pledge to serve Zambians with selflessness, sacrificed his qualified personal dislike for Sata to further the leadership ideals that underpinned his presidency. In a move that demonstrated his humanity, he ordered that his main rival be evacuated to South Africa for specialist treatment. Mwanawasa later explained why he took the decision in a response that revealed his clear appreciation of the role of opposition parties in a competitive multiparty democracy and the benefits that accrue to those in power when they are receptive to criticism. Without such an effective opposition politician as Sata, Mwanawasa suggested, both his leadership and Zambia would have been poorer for it.

“If you had asked me before [Sata suffered a heart attack], I would have told you that I don’t like this person. I don’t even like to hear his voice. That is how much I detested this man because he was maliciously making my job difficult to govern this country. But the news of his illness gripped me with sadness. I realised just how much I needed him. To be President, I do not want to be hero-worshipped all the time. I want people who can correct me, show me that the best it is done would be this way. Of course, if I do not agree, I will tell them that I do not agree for this and this reason. So, I realised just how much I need him around. He is a good fellow to have around,”, Mwanawasa told the media at a press briefing that was also attended by the recovered PF leader, who thanked him for his magnanimity.

Death and the address to Zambians from the grave

On 29 June 2008, President Mwanawasa left Zambia to attend the African Union Heads of State and Government ordinary summit in Egypt. Later that day, Mwanawasa was reported to have suffered a major stroke that left him in a critical condition. He was subsequently flown to Percy Military Hospital in France for treatment but died on 19 August 2008, aged 59, following what was said to be complications arising from the stroke. President Mwanawasa was put to rest on 3 September 2008.

Addressing Zambia from the grave, in a pre-recorded video statement of farewell dated 23 March 2005 that was broadcast on national television, Mwanawasa stressed the values that guided his public life. Expressing gratitude for the opportunities that fell his way and displaying the profound awareness, decency and firm moral compass that were characteristic of his deep sense of self-identity, the address implored future governments to especially fight corruption and is worth quoting at length:

“I am grateful to all of you, for giving me the opportunity during part of my life to serve you as President. It was a privilege which I cherished up to my death. I did all my best to improve the standards of living of you my people. I strove to attend to the production of sufficient food for domestic consumption and for export. I worked hard to encourage investments, both local and foreign, so as to create jobs and so as to enhance the growth of our economy.

“I believed that national development could only be sustained if good governance, respect for the rule of law and democracy were encouraged and not taken for granted. To spur these virtues, the fight against corruption had to be waged relentlessly and without treating anybody as a sacred cow. I regret that in my zeal to facilitate this fight, I lost friendship with a number of some of my best friends and at many times my own life and that of my family members were threatened. I want to assure the nation that no malice or ill will was intended in these initiatives.

“I was driven purely by love for my country and the urgent need to transform it from poverty to prosperity. I have always been grieved to see so much poverty, hopelessness and anguish in the faces of our children, the leaders of tomorrow. It has always been my belief that nobody has the right to take away what we should be giving to these children and keep them in their selfish pockets. I do hope that the party, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, can continue with this vision for our nation pursuing the fight of zero tolerance to corruption.

“I was sad when some of you our members appeared to embrace corruption and actually criticized me for fighting the scourge. This vice will not develop our country. It is my desire that all future governments will continue to wage this fight. If in my endeavours to provide only the best for my country I offended some of my compatriots, all I can ask is that they should find a place in their hearts to forgive me as no deliberate intentions to harm their feelings without just cause was intended.

“To those who attended my funeral and to those who mourned with my family, I say I am extremely grateful to all of you. I am certain that I speak on behalf of my family that their burden has thereby been lightened.”

I miss Levy Mwanawasa. He was a damn good president, who demonstrated that leadership matters and embodied the ethos of basic integrity, soundness in decision-making process, a resilient sense of optimism, and respect for one another’s humanity. Constantly rising above partisan considerations and providing decisive leadership, Mwanawasa ended the culture of political violence by party cadres and the humiliating practice of lining up women to dance and welcome the President at airports. Ministers accused of corruption were dismissed even before the public complained and subsequently prosecuted. While he saw himself primarily as a lawyer, many Zambians fondly remember Mwanawasa as the best President of Zambia after Kaunda, a good foot soldier for justice and freedom, and one of the country’s genuine post-independence heroes, whose leadership was anchored on the promotion of ethical values and social justice.

Zimbabwe must take a cue from Zambia, Malawi

The curtain has come down on Zambian elections with opposition United Party for National Development leader Hakainde Hichilema declared winner of the presidential race.

What makes the Zambian poll worth emulating is that outgoing leader Edgar Lungu gracefully conceded defeat and pledged to hand over power peacefully.

“We held our general elections on Thursday and the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has released the final results. Based on the ECZ results, I will comply with the constitutional provisions for peaceful transitions of power,” Lungu said.

’’I would, therefore, congratulate my brother the president-elect, His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema for becoming the seventh republican president.”

The same happened in Malawi in June last year when opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera won the country’s rerun presidential election, defeating incumbent Peter Mutharika with 58,57% of the vote.

Thumps-up to the military and the election governing bodies in the two countries for ensuring that electoral justice prevails.

In the case of Malawi, an independent Judiciary refused to be cowed by the incumbent to perpetuate his unpopular rule and abnormalities in the initial election to order a rerun which the opposition won.

The examples set in Zambia and Malawi should be cherished and emulated by all Sadc countries for long-term peace and stability in the region.

The two countries, though far inferior in terms of economic development, have shown others in the region how real democracy works.

Sadc should move away from the scourge of disputed elections that has continued to plague most of its member States, Zimbabwe being the chief culprit.

The region has continued to tolerate wayward behavior by the military and ruling Zanu PF party in Zimbabwe. Soldiers have been beating people while propping up the ruling party.

Sadc stood aloof in 2008 when the late former President Robert Mugabe refused to concede defeat to MDC–T leader Morgan Tsvangirai in the first round of the polls.

Mugabe declared that he could not be removed by a pen (elections) and Sadc failed to take him to account.

What has been happening in Zimbabwe is in sharp contrast to what obtains in her regional peers. Zimbabwe’s progress has been stifled by haggling between the ruling party and the opposition.

Ruling party supporters and top government officials should respect the will of the people.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission should act professionally as a true custodian of the people’s votes, and the military should steer clear of civilian matters.

This culture of disputed elections cannot continue to be tolerated in the region.

Haiti ‘on its knees’ as quake death toll surpasses 2,000

Residents look on as workers receive humanitarian aid from a US helicopter at Les Cayes airport after Saturday’s magnitude 7.2 earthquake [Henry Romero/Reuters]

Authorities say at least 600,000 people are in need of assistance following the earthquake in the country’s south.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake that has killed more than 2,000 people has left Haiti “on its knees”, Prime Minister Ariel Henry said, as survivors showed increasing frustration about the sluggish arrival of relief in hard-hit areas.

Henry has promised a rapid increase in aid. But in a video address on Wednesday evening, he conceded that the Caribbean nation was in trouble.

“Haiti is now on its knees,” Henry said. “The earthquake that devastated a large part of the south of the country proves once again our limits, and how fragile we are.”

Dozens of people went to Les Cayes airport demanding food after a helicopter arrived carrying supplies, a witness told the Reuters news agency. Police intervened to allow a truck carrying aid to leave.

Following another night of rains, residents in Les Cayes, including those camped in a mushrooming community of tents in the city centre, complained of scant assistance.

Haitian authorities said late on Wednesday that the official death toll had risen to 2,189.

Concern was also growing for more remote places outside Les Cayes such as Jeremie to the northwest, where access roads were damaged, videos on social media showed.

Pierre Cenel, a judge in Les Cayes, rebuked the government in Port-au-Prince.

“As a judge, I must not have a political opinion. But as a man, as a man concerned about the situation of my country, nothing is working. They didn’t do anything to prepare for this disaster,” Cenel said.

The poorest country in the Americas, Haiti is still recovering from a 2010 quake that killed more than 200,000 people. The latest disaster hit just weeks after President Jovenel Moise was assassinated on July 7, plunging Haiti into political turmoil.

Jerry Chandler, the head of Haiti’s civil protection agency, told a news conference he knew aid had yet to reach many areas but officials were working hard to deliver it.

“The frustration and despair of the population is understood, but … the population is asked not to block the convoys so that civil protection can do its job,” he said.

There were at least 600,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance and 135,000 families displaced, Chandler said. The goal was to deliver aid to everyone in need within a week.

Social media has facilitated firing President Lungu, can it facilitate his come back?

By Venus N Msyani

President Edgar Chagwa Lungu decision to hand over power peacefully has raised likes on his Facebook posts.

It appeared would be a hard thing for president Lungu to hand over power peacefully to the opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema based on his about couple years ago prophecy.

“We will one day have a Tonga president but certainly not the current aspirant.” President Lungu prophesied back in 2019 while addressing journalist in Livingstone Southern Province.

He was referring to his main rival United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema.

As the just ended August 12 election results were being announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officials and Hichilema took a lead, president Lungu protested that the election was not free and fair.

He claimed that Patriotic Front (PF) votes were unprotected in three provinces, Southern, North Western, and Western Province because PF polling agents were brutalized and chased from polling stations in those provinces.

He incorporated the disturbing news to every Zambian into his claim: The brutal murder of his party North Western Province Chairman Jackson Kungo and one other person who were brutally killed after being suspected of trying to rig the election.

The claim brought worry to many people in the country as they thought president Lungu was trying to use the incidence to reject the will of the people and make sure that his prophecy come to pass.

It was not the case. President Lungu has decided to hand over power to president elect Hakainde Hichilema peacefully. In few days Hakainde will be sworn in as the seventh president of Zambia.

It is a smart decision for president Lungu and his Patriotic Front party as it appears to have won him trust among social media funs again.
Before election, president Lungu Facebook posts received an average of 2k likes per day. Now they receive an average of 100K likes per day. Where these likes are coming from is easy to guess.. From the very people who has just fired him.

For the first time in Zambia history, social media has facilitated firing a president, can it facilitate his come back?

Unfortunately, Zambia has no record of a come-back party. It will be a record breaking if it will start with the PF and good luck to president Edgar Lungu if looking for a come-back.

Mazoka’s soul now lies in peace – Nkombo

[By Mwaka Ndawa and Chambwa Moonga]

UPND chairman for elections Garry Nkombo shed tears of joy this morning as his party president Hakainde Hichilema was declared winner of the August 12, 2021 presidential election.

And Nkombo says UPND founding president Anderson Mazoka’s soul now lies in peace with the party’s victory.

Founding leader of United Party for National Development (UPND) late Anderson K Mazoka with Hakainde Hichilema

Nkombo, who returned his seat in Mazabuka Central led his team in popping champagne (moet et chandon) and toast to success after his party was crowned winner by Electoral Commission of Zambia chairperson judge Esau Chulu.

It was a momentous occasion for members of the public who thronged the national totalling centre (Mulungushi International Conference Centre) in jubilation for their transition.

The crowd which was dominated by youths took their celebrations to the streets and blocked Great East Road and chanted “abwelele ku Chawama (he ‘Lungu’ should return to Chawama)”.

Police officers could not control the crowd as it was overwhelming but they kept vigil.

The youths pulled down PF posters hanging at Manda Hill footbridge.

The UPND overpowered the PF with a margin of 996,556 in 155 constituencies across the country with Mandevu left to be counted.

Speaking after the totaling of results was concluded, Nkombo said the dream of UPND’s founding father, late Anderson Mazoka, has been achieved through its triumph with the help of the people.

He assured electorates that his party was competent.

“I am very certain that this is a new beginning. I would like to thank the almighty God who makes light come into darkness…. This day was long time coming, I don’t even know if I will have a job in this new government because Mr Hichilema, if he was here, he would not have tossed to anything,” Nkombo said.

“We jumped the protocol as far as he (Hakainde) is concerned, there is nothing to celebrate. This country has got a lot of challenges which the Zambian people in their collective wisdom have decided to lamp on the shoulders of this one man but we must be quick to say that this one man is equal to the task and you must all watch the space.”

He said the ousting of the PF from power was not done by the UPND alone but Zambians whom they [UPND] owe allegiance to.

“You don’t need to be told that the UPND has been in this struggle for 23 years and to find themselves in a position of authority, we call it the position of authority courtesy of the Zambian people rather than a position of power because the power belongs to the people,” Nkombo said.

“We want to thank the youth bracket of this country because they were the most hit by the recklessness, shortsightedness, myopic nature of the government of the PF. We want to assure you that we will not let you down. We will make sure that the national resources are utilised to the best interest of those we have endevoured to serve.”

Nkombo said Hichilema was a true definition of tenacity as he was bold in the midst of trouble, and death.

He hinted that the UPND government would restructure the ECZ and ensure that it is free from political interference.

“Under this new order, we are going to create a truly independent electoral commission. We will not swallow our words; commissioners will have to come from different political persuasions rather than being appointed by one human being,” Nkombo said.

He added that no citizen would be victimised using the public order Act.

“We believe in the fundamental freedoms of people. The Public Order Act has been abused by successive governments. It has been operating under the whims of human beings. This government is going to be that of laws rather than that of men. The POA will be reformed. In its current form, it is lacking a little bit, but the past government used it to abuse citizens. That will be completely avoided in the government of UPND. No citizen will be a victim of the law,” said Nkombo.

“Mazoka’s soul now lies in peace because this (victory) was his dream and we will not let him down.”

And Nicholas Malata, a Lusaka resident, urged the new government to create jobs for youths.

“We want everyone to be treated fairly in relation to jobs. I don’t expect the new government to fulfill all the promises like mealie-meal to come back to K50 soon, it will take a little bit of time but we have to be patient. He (HH) will try to change some of the things like corruption and other things people campaigned against. I was almost leaving for the diaspora if the PF bounced back but I now have hope things will change,” said Malata.

You said Lungu will be safe; but tell him stolen money should be returned- CiSCA tells HH

0

The Civil Society Constitution Agenda (CiSCA) says has noted with concern President Elect Hakainde Hichilema’s assurance of the safety of the outgoing President Edgar Lungu and his cohort.

CiSCA says while this could be well and good there is unfinished business with the Zambians as all the funds stolen should be returned back to the last ngwee.

“President Elect you can cozy up all you like but recover and give us back our money,” says CiSCA.

Full statement below:

Lusaka, 17 August 2021: The Civil Society Constitution Agenda (CiSCA) congratulates the people of Zambia for once again demonstrating to ourselves and others of our unshakable belief in democracy.

The large numbers that voted and in doing so unequivocally replaced a corrupt stifling dictatorship of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu with that of the President Elect Hakainde Hichilema under very oppressive and repressive conditions is nothing short of a miracle.

CiSCA wholeheartedly congratulates the United Party for National Development for affirming the tenets of democracy by the Party’s consistency, perseverance in the harsh environment of the opposition among most of the party’s rank and file when it was far much easier for individuals to defect to the ruling party because it was the only party with a ‘clear development agenda,‘ as per the defecting mantra.

CiSCA is hopeful that the President Elect’s maiden press briefing on 16th August 2021 set a progressive tone of pledging his administration’s upholding of human rights, constitutionalism, non-interference in state institutions, zero tolerance to cadre terror, non-tolerance to corruption, promotion of unity and most critical, revamping the economy.

All these positive marked departure from what was prevailing in the previous regime leading to Zambians resounding rejection on the 12th of August 2021.

However, like the English adage goes, ‘the proof is in the pudding,’ because Zambians have heard these good intentions before.

Other than the previous ruling parties, CiSCA contends that the other parties’ loss was not an outright rejection by the Zambian people but fitting into the election’s trajectory of giving a chance to the longest serving opposition party.

Therefore, to the other candidates CiSCA asks you to stay focused, be consistent and we the Zambian people who have the ultimate authority will give you a chance in the future.

In congratulating HH, CiSCA has the following asks:

Constitution
As per the UPND’s manifesto, CiSCA would like to see the immediate revisiting and hopefully final people driven review of our Constitution not only to deal with the lacunas that were caused by PF dominated National Assembly’s cherry picking of the so called non-controversial provisions in the final draft of the Technical Committee on the Constitution but also to comprehensively expand the Bill of Rights to include economic social and cultural rights.

The Bill of Rights to further include special rights for the usually marginalized sectors of our society. However, this should be done through building consensus among citizens if the new constitutional order is to engender loyalty and legitimacy.

Electoral Commission of Zambia
As per the new ruling party’s manifesto, CiSCA requests the immediate prioritizing the strengthening of the Electoral Commission of Zambia by guaranteeing not only its independence but also strengthening its capacity.

The high levels of anxiety that each general election brings to this nation is unacceptable in the digital age. There is too much hustle and bumbling from registration, to campaigns, to voting, to counting and announcements.

Voter education should be continuous and not be an event. The number of spoiled ballots at 124,906 thus far recorded, far surpassing the collective number of votes for numbers 3 to 15 presidential candidates is not only embarrassing but is a violation of the right to vote.

Corruption
CiSCA noted the President Elect’s assurance of the safety of the outgoing President and his cohort.

Well and good but there is unfinished business with the Zambians. We want all the funds stolen back to a ngwee. Mr. President Elect you can cozy up all you like but recover and give us back our money!

Use it to improve our schools so as they look like real learning centres and not deserted beehives! Pay our retirees immediately! Zambia being among the 5 hungriest nations in the world as per the Global Hunger Index, use the money to expand the numbers of social cash transfers beneficiaries.

CiSCA is happy that the usual suspects aligned to grand theft won Parliamentary seats and therefore they are within reach of retrieving our money. CiSCA contends that they probably used our money to lay out massive campaigns that poor hungry voters could not resist and therefore leading to their victory. We want each and every coin back in our public coffers.

Unity
CiSCA applauds the President Elect’s intention of uniting the nation from the worst polarisations that Zambia has ever had the misfortune to experience.

Nonetheless, CiSCA has noted that in Zambia there is a kafkan type of metamorphosis after each election when the losing side and violent cadres suddenly disappear only to remerge in the ruling party.

This has contributed to former ruling parties going into oblivion immediately after losing power and just existing by name.

This has also contributed to a weakening of our democracy by ruling parties desperately making serious sometimes criminal efforts to hang on to power at whatever cost.

Therefore, CiSCA urges the new ruling party not to embrace former PF members no matter how lowly they claim they want to contribute or to work with your party.

Thank them for the offer but reject them. Yes politics is about numbers and you have your numbers. Your necessary numbers are the millions that voted for you. Kwamana! Toxic politicians should remain ku wire. The nation knows who these are.

The Media
Mr. President we as CiSCA are happy that in your maiden speech there was some connotation of Zambia finally getting our Right to Information Act.

We therefore request you to show goodwill by restoring the Post Newspaper’s assets to the owner and work out a payment plan for the proprietor(s) for the unpaid taxes as per the court ruling. Restore Prime Television.

Restructure, rebrand and commercialize the public media houses such as Times of Zambia, Daily Mail and Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation to give confidence to us the public. In their current forms and organizational cultures these media houses are untenable. Maintain ZANIS for government information.

ZICTA, NHIMA, IBA
CiSCA requests you Mr. President to disband authorities that just serve the purpose of providing employment to supporters or ruling party sympathizers and place their functions in the relevant government ministries.

Protect The Presidency Now….risk Of State Capture By Crooks Is High

0

By Ngobola Cengelo Muyembe

We have just elected our 7th President of this great Republic and those of us that detested the government of Edgar Chagwa Lungu are very excited about things to come.

However, if we must be fair to Chagwa, he never started off with the 48 houses, Fake Fire trucks, illegal tenders and all sorts of criminality that came to characterize his presidency.

He was just a disbarred lawyer from Chawama who took too much to the bottle and got into government by chance because of Michael Sata. There is no way he could have known about that Russian gun runner from his bar in Chawama or could have known all those criminals that came with all sorts of illegal deals to him.

Someone must have introduced those criminals to Chagwa and as a country we failed to protect this President and the Office which he occupied. No one did a background check or checked the intentions of the people that came. We left it up to him, Hapunda and Kaizer Zulu e.t.c to decide who gets to him and who doesn’t on a fee. This is illegal in other countries.

People in Zambia think protecting the Presidency is about reporting anyone that insults the President! This is senseless and has nothing to do with protecting the president but all to do with infringement on the right to free speech.

Why lock up a medical doctor for insulting Chagwa but protect criminals that surrounded him from prosecution? A verbal insult on a President will not harm our national security or take away food from the people but criminals next to the President will do that.

I know of times street thugs would brag to people that they are able to talk to the President directly.

Let us look at how the American Presidency gets protected to ensure that the President does not fall prey to blackmailers and all sorts of criminals. They have the equivalent of the Office of the President we have in Zambia which is called the Secret Service.

Unlike our OP which gets abused to spy on citizens and political opponents, the Secret Service of the United States is mandated by Congress with two distinct and critical national security missions: protecting the nation’s leaders and safeguarding the financial and critical infrastructure of the United States.

The protection is not just physical but from criminal influence as well.

As of 2010, the Service had over 6,500 employees: 3,200 Special Agents, 1,300 Uniformed Division Officers, and 2,000 technical and administrative employees. Special agents serve on protective details and investigate financial, cyber, and homeland security-related crimes.

This means that when the President gets elected, he becomes the property of the State and it becomes the duty of the State to know each and every person that gets in contact with him through a system called vetting. They make sure that even his own cell phone records become the property of the state in case some crooks want to get to him and disturb the will of the people that voted.

In Zambia and in Africa we don’t seem to do that. We just assume that just because we voted, the man will do right by his own people without ensuring that the will of the people is protected.

We leave these people on their own, not knowing that a Findlay or a Bokoni Soko can get to them and start driving a different agenda that is not in the interest of the nation.

Right now, HH is not fully protected and by protection I don’t just mean physical. How many people has he spoken with since he won the presidency and about what? What about those financial crooks that masquerade as NGO’s, how many of those have been to him? Who is keeping these records?

He promised the youth that he will create employment through empowerment and for me one of those empowerment projects can be through Brick making.

The Turkish Bricklayers have their own association which they use to lobby our government to include them in brick making. Have these people been trying to get to him so that they protect their brick making business?

What about the mining lobbyists at the Chamber of Mines? Have they started getting in touch with his closest aids so that they influence the trajectory of the UPND policy on mining?

What about the financial crooks at FQM that have been stealing from the Zambian people? Or the Chinese government whose people have their business here in Zambia and would want those protected?

We the people voted for President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND and the people they should be serving are those that voted for them. It is the duty of the government machinery to protect the Presidency from undue external pressure that will go against people’s expectations.

I never saw a Turkish Bricklayer, Lebanese Trader, Chinese Contractor, Mount Meru owners standing in a queue for more than 10 hours. I only saw our people because the government is their only lobbyist that they believe will make policies decisions that favours them.

What happened to Mandela was not an accident! When he got out of prison, our people celebrated but left him and his family alone and exposed to meet all sorts of characters without any safety net. The Apartheid criminals found a way of getting to Mandela and his family members through his close aids like Joe Slovo and they secured their future.

Today, some South Africans will say that Mandela sold them out to white people not knowing that he was just one man left alone to be manipulated by the likes of the Oppenheimers. There is only so much pressure that one person can take and it is important that these people are protected. Capture starts now.

How did Chagwa end up giving back Kasumbalesa border post to RB and associates? How did Eric Silwamba the person who was a lawyer for FQM, the people that have been stealing from the Zambian people end up as Board Chairman of ZCCM-IH?

Let us protect this president before he gets hijacked by financial crooks. Let us not depend on his own goodwill but devise a system that protects him even against himself.

Something we never did for Chagwa, Rupiah, Mwanawasa and Chiluba. We left these people to their own devices only to be influenced by financial crooks that have now scampered like viruses on an attack on their next victim.

I have already seen all sorts of thugs jumping ship claiming they have defected to the UPND.

Let that next victim NOT be President Hakainde Hichilema but instead protect him as he is now the property of the people of this Republic who voted for him and he should do right by them

WHY HH WONT MANAGE TO ‘FIX’ ZAMBIA…THERE IS A BIG MINDSET PROBLEM TO DEAL WITH FIRST

By CHRISPA MULENGA

WITH just about 7 days to go before Zambia inaugurates its 7th President—Hakainde Hichilema, many Zambians are very hopeful that the self-made billionaire is finally going to be the man who will turn around Zambia’s fortunes.

Many countrymen and women believe that the hunger and poverty situation will improve once a new president Hichilema settles down. Some UNZA lecturers and other staff members are convinced that their salaries will no longer be delayed once HH is in power. Those in business are busy consoling each other that once a new government is elected, the gloomy business environment in Zambia will suddenly improve. ‘The Kwacha will appreciate to something like K10 per US Dollar once just 4 hours after he is sworn in’, I heard one businessman tell his colleagues while having a meal at Food Palace along Lusaka’s Cairo road.
Do you also hold that school of thought?

Unfortunately, I am one of the few Zambians who is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that even with the coming of Hichilema in the corridors of authority, our country will remain the same.

You see, the biggest problem of Zambians or Africans in general is this illusionary belief that they could change their countries by voting a different person into power. It is this belief that all problems of a country start and stop with the President. That if you could just have the right man in power, then all of a sudden, Zambia would transform. This is what they call chasing a mirage, imagining some utopia. Unfortunately utopias are never realized in life.

The actual problem of Africa is not the presidents. From where do these presidents come? Where did Edgar Lungu come from? Was it not from among us in Chawama? The problem of Africa, the problem of Zambia is its citizens, their shared values and mentalities.

The day Zambians wakeup and stop looking for an external enemy and realize that they themselves are Zambia’s problem is the day we shall get closer to finding an African solution.

I have often told friends that I am happiest whenever the MPs draw bigger sitting allowances of something like K2,000 every day. As Zambians, we lambast our representatives in public for drawing these salaries. In private, we drain our MPs. We invite them for funerals, for introduction ceremonies, church services and expect them to contribute out of pocket to save us. My former area MP Maria Langa [Chilanga Constituency] once told me that she attends no less than 10 functions in a week on average. She was also expected to find jobs for our people in Chilanga. She buys coffins too!

They must contribute towards the least of needs. These big salaries they draw, they all go straight to the people they represent. Yet it seems some of us live in an illusion called Zambia. We expect our MPs to act as MPs in UK except that in our case, we also expect them to play donor to their people’s needs.

We decry the corruption in the country yet we bribe to get our children in the best schools. We bribe ZESCO to connect us to national grid. Actually, I did that just last week. We bribe our way out of traffic police charge sheets. We have no respect for traffic rules. We are every evil we see in President Lungu, Bowman Lusambo, Kaizer Zulu and the entire PF team. Every ill you can diagnose in President Lungu and his Government, you will find twice or thrice the magnitude in a Zambian citizen. We Zambians are really evil beings!

We complain of government incompetence, yet go ahead to champion incompetence in every aspect of our lives where government has no control. Our carpenters produce substandard furniture. Our bricklayers who prefer to be called contractors are extremely pathetic.

I often ask myself; if the public sector is too incompetent, how come the private sector has not been any better? How come you are more bound to have a misdiagnosis in a private hospital than in a public hospital?

News Diggers, New Vision and The Mast all write stories everyday that highlight government incompetence. Yet, there will never be a single day where you will pick up a Zambian newspaper and fail to find an error on every page. Perhaps one day as Zambians we ought to self-reflect, and look within and realize, that we are demons we are trying to fight. If outgoing President Lungu and his government were the only incompetent people and everyone else was competent, then Zambia would be a Scandinavian country of sorts.

Why don’t we have world class restaurants in the country? Why is it that customer care sucks in private institutions just as it does in public institutions?

Every Zambian I meet complains of the system, of the incompetence. Then I ask myself; “you dear Zambian, where can I find examples of your excellent output?”

The same people who complain of poor working conditions run slavery rings in their own homes. The day maids and garden boys of this country decide to speak out, we shall be shocked at the evil we sustained in our homes.

I now suspect that our anger, our rants, our complaints, our insults on Facebook about the system are all because this system is a daily reminder of our own incompetences, our own weaknesses as a people. What this PF government has done is hold a mirror up to the Zambian society and we are not happy about our own reflection.

There is something deeply wrong around how the Zambian and African societies are constructed. Zambian citizens promise so much and deliver so little. Our shared beliefs, mindsets and values have been constructed in such a way that regardless of the president in power, we shall always produce substandard results.

It is no wonder that all over Africa, we complain of the same problems. Littered cities, corruption, failed government institutions, name it all. You could fly from Uganda to Malawi to Ghana to Senegal and not notice a difference. Because? It is not a problem of presidents. It is a problem of the African citizens. But they are too scared of self-criticism, they have dabbled in escapism and found scapegoats in their leaders.

As Plato wrote in the Republic; “like man, like state.” We can’t expect to have better leaders until we have better people. You can’t create great companies without great employees. It doesn’t matter how great the CEO is, if she has crap employees, she will have a crap company. That is the case of Zambia and other African countries!

So, please stop condemning President Lungu. If we were to replace President Lungu with you, you would actually be worse than him.
Is Hakainde Hichilema the savior we need? Brothers and sisters, story izibaka kudala. President Hichilema or just about any Zambian politician can never better the lives of Zambians. Actually, because we are expecting too much from Mr Hichilema, we will be massively disappointed with him within the next 2 years. The insults that await President Hichilema – awe mwandi! Not even the cyber bullying law will protect him.

You see, the only way Zambia can become a better country is if the human being reading this write up changes his/her ways. Fellow Zambian, please change your ways!

ABSA Zambia prognosis on HH and likely changes

0

Following the successful elections this last weekend, please find below brief profile of the President and anticipated changes. We will continue to provide you updates.

BACKGROUND

* Born in 1962, the president elect, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema (popularly known as HH) is a seasoned business man, commercial farmer & politician and is leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND). He ascended to the helm of the UPND in 2006 following the death of Mr. Anderson Mazoka. HH has contested the presidency 5 times (over the last 15 years) and has finally ascended to the helm in August 2021 by winning the elections and beating the incumbent President Edgar Lungu of the Patriotic Front by over 1 million votes.
* Mr. Hichilema holds a BA Economics and Business Administration (University of Zambia) and MBA Finance and Business Strategy (University of Birmingham). His career spans across a wide range of activities including being Chief Executive and also Chairman for a number of companies and boards respectively. Noteworthy is HH having served as the board chairman for Barclays Bank Zambia Plc (30 March 2004 to 14 July 2006), having served on 24 other boards in various capacities including chairman and being a member of the Institute of Directors for Zambia.
* The UPND is targeting to achieve a GDP growth rate of 10% in order for the country to achieve the 2030 vision in the party’s manifesto. Three of the key programs to be undertaken by the new government are (i) Economic transformation (ii) entrepreneurship and (iii) digital revolution

EXPECTED CHANGES

* Incumbent Bank of Zambia Governor is expected to be replaced very soon. The same is expected with other presidential appointees (Security wings, Permanent secretaries, Secretary to the Treasury, Utility Company chief executives, NAPSA, ZRA etc.) This is a usual trend whenever there is a change of government.

* Significant structural and some policy changes are expected in the government agencies.
* Financial and budgetary reforms as we head into the budget season are also expected. It will be key to see the 2022 national budget to be presented in October this year.

* Removal of middlemen in the fuel and agriculture sector that added little value but increased government cost in Crude oil importation and FISP is expected.

* Reforms in the FX Market are expected to come – Mineral royalty taxes and other mining statutory obligations may be collected in ZMW once again allowing increased FX supply on the market which will support the Kwacha. Further, direct Central Bank intervention to force a Kwacha appreciation like we saw during run up to elections will stop.
* The Kwacha is expected to appreciate against the US Dollar in the short to medium term from the current 19.3 to 15.0 on the back of positive market sentiment/investor confidence. (New government is projecting a rate of 10.0 USD/ZMW)

* The offshore investors that sold USD and bought Zambian government bonds in the last 2 to 3 months at yields averaging 34% are expected to continue aggressively participating in the auctions. We have already noted offshore investors trying to sell dollars today and position to buy more bonds in the next auction, implying a rally in the bond market. The dollar flows will help support the kwacha appreciation and interest rates are expected to start going down (full shift of the yield curve which will filter to other market interest rates). We expect market rates to drop 400 – 500 basis points on average in the short term.
* The BOZ Bond Buy-Back program that had commenced last year is likely to be stopped despite it having been planned for the full year 2021. The continuation of this will depend on the objectives of the new Governor/Minister of Finance

* Public expenditure tightening and close monitoring and accountability is expected.
* IMF Programme implementation expected to resume with some measure of confidence in the governance system. A fully funded program is expected and the new government will utilize the $1.4 billion SDR which may most likely be used to boost FX reserves. There’s also an expectation that the IMF program will be concluded in the very short term and at a faster pace than was the case with the previous government.

* We anticipate rating agencies to improve the country rating (from Junk) and outlook in the medium term as the political risk is reduced and with a funded IMF program on board.
* A review of mining tax regime which has been poised to offer huge concessions to the mining corporates at the expense of personal income tax as the new government endeavors to empower the masses

UPND’s EMPHATIC WIN PROOF THAT ZAMBIANS WERE TIRED OF PFs TYRANNY, CORRUPTION – TIZ

UPND’s EMPHATIC WIN PROOF THAT ZAMBIANS WERE TIRED OF PFs TYRANNY, CORRUPTION – TIZ

By Ulande Nkomesha,

TRANSPARENCY International Zambia (TI-Z) says UPND’s win in the recently held general elections is an indication that Zambians had enough of the tyranny, lawlessness and corruption under the PF regime.

In a statement, TI-Z executive director Maurice Nyambe further said UPND’s victory reflects the will of the majority Zambians.

“As Transparency International Zambia we would like to offer our congratulations to Mr Hakainde Hichilema on his election as the seventh President of the Republic of Zambia. We would also like to congratulate the UPND for winning the just ended 12th August elections,” Nyambe said.

“We think the UPND’s win reflects the will of the majority of the people. What this shows also is that the Zambian citizens had enough of the tyranny, the lawlessness, they had enough of the corruption and the impunity that had become the whole mark of the Patriotic Front regime.”

Nyambe further urged Hichilema to embark on rebuilding the nation.

“We hope that as Mr Hichilema and his team embark on what is the very daunting and gigantic task of rebuilding this nation. We hope that they would have taken lessons from the mistakes that the previous regime committed in order for them to be able to put Zambia on a better trajectory. So, we can only wish them well,” said Nyambe.

“We hope that even as they get down to work, they will not close the spaces for engagement with different stakeholders such civil society organizations and others because ultimately it is in every one of our interests to see it that they succeed, because their success will be the success of the Zambians. So we wish them well even as they embark on this mammoth task.”

Meanwhile, former Attorney General Musa Mwenye said in a statement that the last seven years threatened the fabric of a democratic nation.

“The last seven years threatened the very fabric of who we are, as a nation! Zambia is a democracy and the people are king! Some of us risked our lives and livelihoods to get rid of this system that elevated cadres, corruption and cronyism above patriotism, hard work and merit!

And if this system raises its ugly head again, we will get back into the trenches! Some of us helped build the PF and we have broken what we built because it threatened our country and we are happy to see it go. Zambia is a democracy and shall never be a dictatorship,” said Mwenye.

Zodwa reveals it took her four years to say YES to Ginimbi’s love advances

0

Businesswoman and socialite Zodwa Mkandla has opened about her relationship with the late fellow socialite Genius ‘Ginimbi’ Kadungure, revealing details about their relationship.

Zodwa who was a guest on Chamvary’s show on Power FM’s Centre Stage program answered a number of questions including how she started dating Ginimbi.

Zodwa said she tried so much to decline Ginimbi’s love advances but he was like a dog with a bone.

“I remember meeting that boy… he kept coming to my office he was like a stalker and I kept saying no. One day I said to him ‘if you want to date me you must take me to Hawaii first’ and he said, ‘Don’t worry ndichakuendesai chete’.

“After so many times of trying, four years later one thing led to another we got into a relationship and I realized he was such a nice guy despite what people say, Genius was such a nice guy,” she said.

Zodwa continued detailing her relationship with Genius saying it was a unique and special type of relationship which is why even after they broke up they continued caring for each other.

“Actually we were more of friends than anything else which is why even after we broke up we continued talking and calling each other.

“I spoke to Genius everyday of my life when he lived. We talked every single morning. People didn’t understand why we were that close,” she added.

Zodwa continued spilling the beans that Ginimbi never really cared about the girls he was with and that he would never be with the same girl for more than one week.

“Which is why Genius never stayed with anyone. He would say ‘if it’s not you that I am marrying then there’s no one.

Zodwa-Mkandla-and-Ginimbi
Ginimbi and Zodwa

“Even those girls who were with him and tried to be with him didn’t understand why we were so close and when I showed up he would be with me instead of them.

“He never stayed with one girl for more than one week. He was never serious with any of those girls.

“We cared so much for each other which is why even his family said to me ‘this is your husband bury him the way you want,” she said.

She also revealed that everything is in order as far as Ginimbi’s assets are concerned. Nehanda Radio

CCMG PVT findings for the presidential elections falls within the official results as announced by ECZ

CCMG Verification Statement on the Accuracy of the Official 2021 Presidential Results

Introduction

Today, the Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) is releasing its verification statement on the accuracy of the presidential results. CCMG conducted a parallel vote tabulation (PVT) for the presidential election as part of our comprehensive monitoring of the 2021 general elections. As we stated during preliminary statement, CCMG completed its PVT by 12 noon on Friday 13 August 2021 with over 99% of our monitors having sent in their observation reports. Had it proved necessary, CCMG would have released its PVT estimates if we had any indication there was manipulation of the official results. We commend the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for fulfilling its constitutional duty with honour and are grateful to them for not having to do so. CCMG now confirms that its PVT verifies that ECZ’s official presidential results reflect the ballots cast at polling stations.

Methodology

CCMG’s PVT deployed carefully recruited, highly trained accredited independent non-partisan monitors to a nationally representative random sample of 1,500 polling stations with 866,689 registered voters of whom 463,625 are female (53.5%)[1]. The PVT sample was carefully constructed according to well-established statistical principles to ensure that it was nationally representative and included polling stations in every province, district and constituency of the country. This is done by stratifying by province, district and constituency to ensure the percentage of polling stations, registered voters and female registered voters in the sample closely matches the percentage for the entire country (see Annex 6). For example, Eastern province has 11.8% of all polling stations, 12.8% of all registered voters, and 13.1% of all female registered voters in the country, and so the CCMG’s PVT sample matches this distribution with 11.8% of polling stations,12.8% of registered voters, and 13.3% female registered voters coming for Eastern province in the sample. This ensure that CCMG’s PVT sample is truly nationally representative and therefore, can determine the quality of the voting and counting processes and can estimate accurately estimate how Zambians cast their ballots in all 12,152 polling stations.

On election day, CCMG’s PVT monitors witnessed and reported on the entire voting and counting process, arriving at 5:30 in the morning and staying at their assigned polling station until counting was completed and results have been posted. Because CCMG’s PVT monitors are deployed to a nationally representative random sample, the PVT methodology provides the most accurate information on the conduct of voting and counting and it is the only methodology that can provide independent verification of the accuracy of official election results. CCMG’s PVT is not an exit poll. Our monitors do not ask any voter for whom he or she voted. CCMG’s PVT monitors also do not count the presidential ballots as that is the responsibility of the polling officials. However, our monitors are present throughout the counting process and report on its conduct. CCMG’s PVT estimates, therefore, are based on the official and publicly available official results from polling stations.

PVTs are used around the world and across Africa to independently determine if official election results reflect the ballots cast. The PVT methodology has been successfully employed by citizen observers for multiple elections in numerous African countries, including: Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana and Zimbabwe. PVT’s have routinely been conducted for presidential elections in Zambia with PVTs previously conducted in 1991, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016.

The PVT methodology is impartial and non-partisan and reflects the ballots cast regardless of the outcome of an election. Thus, PVTs in Zambia have verified results in past elections both when the ruling party candidate won the election as well as when an opposition party candidate prevailed. For example, the PVT verified the results of the 2008 presidential election when the late Michael Sata lost as well as confirmed his victory in 2011 (see Annex 5).

PVTs serve to independently verify official election results by comparing the official result with the PVT’s estimated range for each candidate (as well as for rejected candidates and turnout). If the official result falls within the PVT estimated range, then the official result reflects the ballots cast at polling stations. However, if the official result falls outside of the PVT estimated range, then the official result has been manipulated and the PVT suggests the true result.

CCMG is an independent, non-partisan citizen monitoring network that conducted a comprehensive observation of the 2021 general elections, including a long-term observation of the pre-election period and the election day PVT. Our observation effort was undertaken to ensure a credible electoral process for all Zambians, and we are beholden to no candidate nor the ECZ.

CCMG PVT Findings

As Table 1 shows, for the two leading candidates as well as for all other candidates combined, the official results announced by the ECZ[2] fall within the PVT estimated range and therefore, we can declare with confidence that the official results reflect the ballots cast at polling stations (see Annex 1 for CCMG PVT estimates for all presidential candidates).

The PVT estimated range for Hichilema’s vote share is 57.7% to 60.5% and his ECZ official result is 59.4%, which falls within this range. Similarly, for President Lungu, the ECZ official result is 38.4%, which falls within the PVT estimated range for his vote share of 37.1% to 39.7%.

PVT
Note: ECZ official presidential results for 155 of 156 constituencies (excluding Mandevu constituency) while CCMG PVT estimates for all 156 constituencies.

Because CCMG’s PVT estimates show that the lowest possible result for Hichilema (57.7%) is greater than the highest possible result for President Lungu (39.8%), the only possible outcome of the election is for Hichilema to receive the most votes of any presidential candidate.

Further, according to CCMG’s PVT estimates, the lowest possible result for Hichilema is 57.7%, which is greater than the 50%+1 vote share required to prevent a presidential runoff election.

CCMG’s PVT estimate for turnout is 70.4% +/-0.7%, with a range of 69.7% to 71.1% and for rejected ballots the PVT estimate is 2.5% +/-0.1%, with a range 2.4% to 2.6%. With 155 of 156 constituencies announced, ECZ’s turnout figure is 70.8%[3] with 2.3% rejected ballots.

CCMG’s PVT monitors reported the election day process was inclusive and transparent, as both PF and UPND party agents participated throughout voting and counting across the entire country (see Annex 2 and 3). As previously reported, PF and UNDP had party agents at 98% and 99% of polling stations during the counting of ballot papers. The PF and UNDP party agents also agreed with the official vote count for the presidential election at 98% and 99% of polling stations, respectively. At 97% of polling stations, a PF party agent signed the official presidential results form (GEN 20), while at 99% a UPND party agent signed the official presidential results form (GEN 20). In addition, polling officials posted the official results for the presidential election at 95% of polling stations (see Annex 4).

Overall, while there were serious challenges during the pre-election period that raised questions about the fairness and credibility of the electoral process, the ECZ conducted a well-organized and credible election day process that largely adhered to official procedures, and both PF and UPND party agents were involved through the voting and counting across all provinces. Given that the CCMG’s PVT estimates verify the ECZ’s official results for the presidential election, all Zambians should have confidence the ECZ’s official presidential results are accurate and reflect the ballots they cast at polling stations. We commend the ECZ for meticulously tabulating the presidential results and announcing results in line with its mandate.

PF members wanted Malanji as running mate – Chipango

0

By Speedwell Mupuchi

KEEGAN Chipango, a former MMD councillor, says the PF received a protest vote over the choice of running mate.

He warns that the PF runs into the danger of sinking into oblivion if they do not handle the postmortem of why they lost elections with honesty.

When announcing Professor Nkandu Luo as his running mate, President Edgar Lungu told off members who did not want her saying they should choose their own in 2026.

But Chipango said Zambians never like Prof. Luo because of her attitude.

“It was very difficult to market Nkandu Luo and that protest was from within PF. Although they never showed it, people were never happy with the choice of running mate,” he said. “The truth is that people wanted honourable [Joe] Malanji to be the running mate. That’s what people expected. But immediately that was not done, people on the Copperbelt were not happy.”

Chipango said people in PF had been fighting Malanji, a former foreign affairs minister, from the time he emerged on the political scene.

He said the battles over the party vice-presidency cost the PF the election.

“People have been fighting Malanji but if God had anointed him for leadership, these people cannot do anything. You can do your own investigation, my brother, people wanted Malanji to be the running mate. Even here in Southern Province, you will find that Malanji was more appealing to people. Even in North Western Province, people wanted Malanji but those guys who deemed themselves as the big guns, who thought they own PF didn’t want Malanji and wanted to start frustrating him,” Chipango said. “These people know themselves. The choice of Nkandu Luo was too early and premature. They should, may be, have considered Nkandu Luo as running mate in 2026. Not now because Zambians harbour a lot of things against her. And even the students, they have not forgiven her [for removing meal allowances]. And these tribal talks again, how can you have a running mate who goes in and starts engaging in tribal talk? That has been a problem.”

He counseled the PF leadership to learn to tell each other the truth during “this time of the postmortem”.

Chipango warned that the former ruling party risks going into oblivion if they fail to tell each other the truth.

“PF runs into the danger of sinking into oblivion if they will not have a constructive postmortem of why they lost. People wanted Honourable Malanji, my brother,” he said. “When they didn’t listen to that, people pulled out and they were not happy. Malanji has a following in Southern, Western, North Western, Copperbelt. You don’t talk about that, it’s his home ground. Eastern Province, he has a following, Northern Province, that’s the man they expected. So people pulled out and left them to market Nkandu Luo by themselves.”

On the judiciary, Chipango congratulated judges and lawyers that stuck to professionalism in the last 10 years.

He said it was time the Judiciary redeemed itself and get back to professional ethics.

He noted that almost everyone had lost confidence in the Judiciary because of the behaviour of some judges, magistrates and lawyers.

Chipango said people now say the courts were heavily politicised.

“So I am calling upon the acting Chief Justice Michael Musonda, he is one of the biggest legal brains we have got in this country, to ensure that the judges operate in a professional manner. They should not allow the Judiciary again to be politicised,” he said. “This is the time for the Judiciary to redeem itself. And I am calling upon the Judiciary to read the mood prevailing in the country. Zambians cannot except anything contrary to what they have been given by God, change of government.”

Chipango said the current election victory was not for UPND but Zambians.

“Zambians decided to fight so there is no way the judiciary should come and reverse what Zambians have decided and what they want. Two million Zambians have spoken, even those that were not decided and those who didn’t register, they have spoken. Let Zambians enjoy what they have decided upon,” he said.

Chipango said the Judiciary should reclaim its position like what it used to be in the 70s up to the 1990s.

He also advised lawyers not to always look for monetary gain but be professional.

“I am even very disappointed with some senior lawyers, who are State Counsels, who have allowed themselves to be politicised, who have actually lost track, lawyers of repute but today because of the kwacha, they have decided to throw their professional ethics to the wind,” Chipango noted.

He advised senior lawyers to help judges to reform the tainted image of the Judiciary.

Chipango said people have gone to extents of saying if one had a case against the government, they should forget about it because they will lose.

COBUSU PF ALIGNED PRESIDENT STEPS DOWN

I AM BIDDING YOU ALL ADIEU.

Allow me to start by firstly mentioning that,
My colleagues and I are not the ones in charge of calling for elections or dissolution of the Executive, whatever transpired was beyond anyones control, kindly note that there is a proceedure for everything.

In my last few days left at The Copperbelt University, allow me to say that I am bidding you all adieu and I would love to mention that I would love to focus my life on other things and my private life.

I don’t regret any good or bad moment I shared with you as it was all part of our memories while others were lessons we learnt.

For all those who feel that there were alot of illegalities and feel the need to take matters to court, feel free to do so especially in terms of finances.

As exciting as this may be, this decision comes with negative impactions especially during this period,

1. There will be no student representatives to sit in senate and advocate for moderation of results due to the different environments and situations each student is or will be facing.

2. There will be no one to negotiate for students that will have challenges reaching the 80% thresshold to write their exams

3. There will be no one to negotiate for students whose CAs will be below average due to different personal reasons to be allowed to sit for their exams.

4. There will be no one to appeal on behalf of students who won’t qualify for Supplementary exams due to there results.

5. There be no one to assist students resolve issues of missing results and wrong comment after publishing of results.

6. There will be no one to continue negotiating for a one week opening date extension.

Note that no one can represent any student with out any capacity.

My hope however is that management should consider students welfare in all decision makings despite not having student representation in stake holders meetings.

Kindly note that elections can only be held in the first term of next Academic year and an election road map will soon be published by the office of The Dean of Students when the time is right.

However if need be for a temporal executive or an interim executive until elections, the right authorities will do the needful of which I do not want my hands to be a part of.
I wish you all the very best, and God’s grace as you prepare and write your exams.

All those who would wish to join student leadership can start familiarising themselves with the students and the student governance system and they should note that, leadership is not for the faint hearted, you need to have a crocodiles skin.

Time waits for no one and I choose to move on.

Remember, The Government will never magically put food on your table or pay your fees and bills, you need to work hard.
Blessed evening.

Affiliation to UPND won’t save wrongdoers, warns Mwaliteta

0

LUSAKA Province UPND chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta says affiliation to the party will not save any wrong doer.

Featuring on Diamond Television’s Breakfast Show in Lusaka yesterday, Mwaliteta said the party will not tolerate cadres who will go in markets and bus stations to harass people.

“No need for the cadres to go to the markets, bus stations, and start harassing people and looting. We can’t tolerate that. But this looting is not from us. It’s coming from thugs who are taking advantage of the situation,” he said. “But we want to urge the police to arrest everyone doing so – whether it’s the UPND cadres found wanting lock them up. No one will come and save them because we have warned them and even if it is another camp or another person as long as he has gone against the law arrest them. No one will defend lawlessness.”

Mwaliteta added that the UPND government wants to bring sanity in the country.

“We want to bring sanity in this country. We want to bring this country back to normal. This issue of cadreism should come to an end,” he said. “But this does not mean we don’t want cadres. But we want cadres who are going to be productive. And our cadres from the time we started they have been so good. This is why we have delivered this victory because they have been so well behaved. But we don’t want them to be infiltrated with bad cadres who just want to join them today and paint a bad picture on UPND. We won’t allow that. That’s why we want police to take charge.”

And Mwaliteta revealed that some PF cadres were trying to persuade their UPND counterparts to attack officials from the former ruling party who have money.

“They (PF cadres) are demanding money from their leaders whom they feel have money, so they want to use our cadres to help them. But our youths have come to us and said ‘this is what it is. [That] we have been approached by PF to harass their leaders who have money’. So we have stopped that,” said Mwaliteta. “And we want to tell PF cadres that things have changed from the moment HH (Hakainde Hichilema) was declared President-elect. This is a different ball game. We are not going to tolerate because we have received information that some bus drivers in bus stations have started chasing each other. But there is no need to do that. Let the drivers operate normally. Let the marketeers do their normal business.”

Cut My Manhood If UPND Win August Elections Was A Mere Joke – Chanda John Chimba

“CUT MY MANHOOD IF UPND WIN AUGUST ELECTIONS WAS A MERE JOKE” SAYS CHANDA JOHN CHIMBA AS HE WROTE BELOW

The last few days have been coupled with a lot of happenings politically, Zambians went to the polls last week to elect A President, Members of parliament, mayors and councilors.

The election period is over, Zambians have decided to give the top job to President elect Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND for the next 5 years.

Personally, I had chosen to support the Patrotic Front and His Excellency Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu, out going President.

Allow me to make mention that I have with immediate effect taken leave from politics, political activities and anything that has to do with politics, I will use this time to build myself and focus on other things and build myself.

During my journey in politics, I may have hurt some of you , I may have step on your toes politically or I may have done things that did not please you due to my affliction with the out going governing Party PF which I wish to apologize from the bottom of my heart this includes the bad joke bets I made out of excitement of “cut my manhood”.238769216_323185239485264_597530488604067897_n

My main focus now will be to continue with my charity works and do other things that have no connection to politics.

I have also seen a picture circulating of me with friends posing in a UPND chitenge, peoooe have called me names over it and thinking I have defected already, but I have not, I have not defected to the upnd but chosen to take leave from politics and take a neutral stance.

My advise to the upnd youths and everyone in the in coming governing party is that do not make the same mistakes we made in PF, so not take people for granted or become too pompous and taken away with power, this is the biggest mistake many youths in PF made over the last 10 years, do not make mistakes PF youths made but instead learn from them and do better.

Lastly, allow me to wish the President Elect H.E Hakainde Hichilema and the Upnd well as they lead this country, and also allow me I wish H.E Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu well as he leaves state house.

U.S congratulates President-elect Hichilema

0

The United States (U.S) government has congratulated President-elect Hakainde Hichilema on his victory in the August 12 general elections.

U.S Department Spokesperson, Ned Price has further congratulated the people of Zambia for exercising their right to vote in historic numbers and welcomed commitments from all parties to a peaceful and orderly transition.

Mr. Price noted that the United States reaffirms its strong partnership with Zambia.

“We look forward to working together with the Zambian government to advance our mutual interests and deepen the friendship between our two nations,” he said.

He stated that the polls are a tribute to the democratic ideals upon which the country was founded and an inspiration for the democratic aspirations of people around the world.

The civil society in Kasempa district of the North-Western province has also congratulated President-elect Hakainde Hichilema for winning the August 12, general elections.

Speaking in an interview, Non-Governmental Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Board Member, Judith Mwanza congratulated the President-elect for his landslide victory in the just ended elections.

“It is the decision of the Zambian citizens, the people themselves who are the ones who have changed government,” Ms Mwanza said.

She further delighted that the electorate in Kasempa constituency voted for a woman as the area member of Parliament.

And, People Living with Disability, Kasempa District Chairperson, Jackson Kesa also congratulated the President-elect and appealed for inclusion of people living with disabilities in the governance of the country.

“We are expecting from the new government the involvement of the disability in all the activities that will be happening in the district,” Mr Kesa said.

He added that people living with disabilities across the country are hopeful that the incoming government will meet their expectations as it is in line with the UPND manifesto.

The Media Institute of Southern Africa- (MISA) Zambia Chapter has also expressed optimism that media law reforms will be one of the key priority areas of the new United Party for National Development (UPND) administration headed by President-elect Hakainde Hichilema.

Interim Chairperson, Barnabas Simatende also congratulated the President-elect Hakainde Hichilema on his election as the 7th President of the Republic of Zambia.

Fr Simatende envisions that MISA is eager to see the transformation of the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) to operate its role as a true public service broadcaster to serve the public and segments of society fairly.

In a statement to the media, the chapter is confident that the new government will enact the Access to Information bill that has not been taken to parliament in a long time.

“Further, MISA Zambia also remains confident of the enactment of the Access to Information Bill which has been shelved for a long time now. Considering that access to information held by public institutions is essential to the functioning of our democracy, effective citizen participation in decision-making and holding duty bearers accountable can only be actualized through the enactment of the Access to Information Bill in Zambia,” the statement read in part.

He pointed out that MISA Zambia is hopeful that the ushering in of the new regime will ensure a free and independent media terrain that will enable the media and its practitioners to carry out their role of informing and educating citizens.

Mr Hichilema was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission of Zambia on 16th August 2021, where he beat his closest rival President Edgar Lungu who has since conceded defeat.

And Zambia United National Fighters Association National Chairman, George Chewe has congratulated President-elect Hakainde Hichilema for emerging victorious in the August 12 general elections.

Mr. Chewe saluted Mr Hichilema’s victory is well deserved for his perseverance in the opposition for over 15 years.

Meanwhile, he has implored the new administration to expedite the process of enacting the national policy that looks at welfare of freedom fighters.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr Chewe said lack of a national policy for freedom fighters has made it difficult for them to receive support from the state.

Mr. Chewe stated that most of the freedom fighters have been reduced to destitutes despite them contributing to the country’s liberation from the colonial masters.

He noted that there is need to prioritize establishing national data for freedom fighters who are still alive and those who passed on.

“The national data for freedom fighters will make it easier for the government to identify and help the deserving freedom fighters,” he said.

Mr. Chewe emphasized the need to recognize the important role that freedom fighters played during the independence struggle.

He further said the Association will continue to engage the new administration over their welfare and pledged to work closely with the new administration for the betterment of the country.

An Important Notice To The Zambian Youths And Senior Citizens On The Trending Forgiveness

0

AN IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THE ZAMBIAN YOUTHS AND SENIOR CITIZENS ON THE TRENDING FORGIVENESS.!!!!

Good morning beloved Zambian Youths and our senior citizens through out the country.
First and foremost, we should all know without a doubt that it was God The Creator who made it possible that our president HH should be an elect today and no one else regardless of the coincidences that my occur.

Secondly, we appreciate all those trying by all means to advise the government regarding forgiving the offenders of the Zambian law which let to them being voted out through out the province.

I would like to make mention that there is a misunderstanding on Bally’s statement, saying “Adada you will be okay don’t worry.” This simply meant that, President HH has forgiven and is advising us to forgive people on our personal grudges if you were mistreated by them in anyway BUT forgiveness will not be compromised to punishment of those found wanting and recovering the resources of the country.

Get this from today that, those found wanting will surely be visited by the law accordingly without adding personal experiences or grudges that does not concern the Zambian people and no one will be spared if found wanting.

In the UPND manifesto there is a statement saying “The government will “Launch ‘Operational Recovery’ to ensure public money corruptly obtained is returned back to the public”. and this will be fulfilled, trust the process and exercise a bit of patience as we are waiting for our President elect to be sworn In next week.

There is a picture circulating of two people in UPND regalia and in the middle is Spax Mining associated with gasing issues, I think that is bringing an alarm among the people of Zambia and should come to an end, if you forgive them (offenders) on a personal level do not bring that to the public as it will be misunderstood by the public who went through hell because of their actions and are thinking otherwise.

Furthermore, let it be known to you dear youths and senior citizens that no defectors will be entertained in the rulling party, we will be doing cleansing of perpetrators in order to have a corruption free country and raise it’s standards according to The Presidents promise during the public briefing.

We actually know those who don’t mean well for the party and we need to forgive and love them but with care and steadiness because God tells as so.

We the UPND youths are not being rude here but allow us to mention that, if at all there are those musicians who participated in Kalandanya choir and run paid for political adverts on their pages for the oppressors as “the majority Zambians put it”, kindly hold your peace for now and we don’t need any song of victory from you today, we have musicians who stood with us through thick and thin and they will do that job eg B-Flow, Pilato, Knack Unit, Organized family and so on. Note that; we don’t hate you or anything but it’s just inevitable for now thanks for understanding.

It is with heavy hearts to learn of the accident that occurred during the celebration, please be advised to celebrate responsibly the country still needs you and to those affect we pray that you get well soonest.God bless Zambia.

For more updates later,
By, UPND and Zambian youth. Together we will surely build a better, Zambia.
ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION.
