US to provide additional weapons, security assistance to Ukraine as Russia says its objectives in Ukraine have escalated beyond Donbas

0

The US administration has revealed it will provide additional weapons and security assistance to Ukraine later this week, as the U.S. has collected “ample evidence” and intelligence that Russia is laying the groundwork to annex additional sovereign Ukrainian territory.

The revelation by the US comes as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told state media on Wednesday, July 20 that Russia’s objectives in Ukraine now extend beyond the eastern Donbas region into the country’s south.

As the war in Ukraine approaches its fifth month, Sergey Lavrov told state media that the “geography is different.”

“It is far from being only DPR (Donetsk People’s Republic) and LPR (Luhansk People’s Republic), it is also Kherson Region, Zaporizhzhia Region and a number of other territories, and this process continues, it continues steadily and persistently,” Lavrov said during an interview with RIA Novosti, published Wednesday.

Lavrov pointed out that as the West continues to supply Ukraine with more long-range weaponry, including High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), Russia’s geographical objectives in Ukraine would move further away from the current line of the Donbas region.

“We cannot allow any weapons in the part of Ukraine controlled by Zelensky or whoever will replace him that pose a direct threat to our territory or the territory of the republics that declared independence or those that wish to determine their future independently,” Lavrov said.

“The President was very clear, as you quoted: denazification and demilitarization in the sense that there should be no threat to our security, no military threat from Ukraine’s territory, and this objective remains,” Lavrov said.

The White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby has now said that downgraded intelligence shows that Russia is beginning to roll out an “annexation playbook” — similar to its plans in 2014 as it annexed Crimea.

Kirby said Russia is installing “illegitimate proxy officials.”

“We know their next moves,” Kirby said, noting proxy officials will “arrange a sham referendum on joining Russia. Then Russia will sue those sham referenda as a basis to try to claim annexation of sovereign Ukrainian territory.”

“The Russian government is reviewing detailed plans to purportedly annex a number of regions in Ukraine” Kirby said, including “all of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblast.”

In Kherson, Kirby said Russia has taken control of broadcasting towers, established “loyalist security forces” and replaced telecommunications infrastructure. Kirby said the Kremlin has also forced residents to apply for Russian citizenship, and are issuing Russian passports.

“The Kremlin has not disclosed the timeline for the referendum, but Russian proxies in these territories claim they will take place later this year, possibly in conjunction with Russia’s September regional elections,” Kirby explained.

Annexation by force, Kirby said, would be a “gross violation of the U.N. charter.”

“We will not allow it to go unchallenged or unpunished,” he said, adding that the U.S. will “continue to provide Ukraine with historic levels of security assistance.”

Later this week, the US will announce the 16th presidential drawdown package of weapons and equipment for Ukraine since President Biden took office.

Kirby said the package is expected to include more HIMARS — also known as highly-mobile advanced rocket systems, and additional rounds of multiple launch rocket systems and artillery ammunition.

“We’re also going to continue to expose Russian plans so the world knows that any purported annexation is premeditated, illegal and illegitimate,” Kirby said, adding that the Biden administration is also sanctioning the “Russian-installed puppets and proxies” in areas of Ukraine that are under Russian control.

“If Russia nevertheless proceeds with their annexation plans, we’re going to respond swiftly and severely and in lockstep with our allies and partners,” Kirby continued. “Russia will face additional sanctions and become even more of a global pariah than it is now.”

He added that the U.S. “will never recognize any purportedly annexed territories belonging to Russia,” and said the Biden administration will “support accountability, efforts for forced deportations, prosecutions of oppositionists and other gross human rights abuses carried out by Russia.”

Man rapes and strangles his friend’s fiancé to death in Kenya

0

Detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a man who raped and killed his friend’s fiancé in Nairobi, Kenya.

The suspect, Edwin Onditi Odada murdered Pamela Asesa, 26, after she welcomed him into the home of her fiancée’ while he was away at work.

DCI in a statement on Thursday, July 21, 2022, revealed Ms Asesa’s fiancée, James Samson Oduor, returned home on July 12, to find her lifeless body on the bed with a t-shirt inserted into her mouth.

“Had Pamela Asesa known that letting her man’s friend to their house would cost her life, she would have never allowed it to happen. Unknown to the deceased, her man’s friend was burning with malice and resentment. Edwin Onditi Odada attacked, raped and strangled her before leaving her for dead,” the statement read.

On July 12th, James Samson Odour, returned home as usual at around 8pm, tired after a long day of grind, expecting to be received into the warm arms of his lover.

The two had been cohabiting at a rented apartment in Nairobi’s Umoja Estate. Oduor, who works at an engineering company along Mombasa road, arrived at his house only to find it inaccessible having been locked.

At first, he assumed that his fiancé had probably gone out to shop for dinner, but her phone constantly went unanswered.

It was not until minutes turned into hours without her showing up that he smelt a rat. He contacted a friend who showed up immediately and together, they broke into the house. What they witnessed sent shockwaves all over Oduor’s body.

His fiancé’s lifeless body was lying sprawled on their bed. A T-shirt had been inserted into the deceased mouth, while the body had visible scratch marks on the neck, indicating that she had been strangled. The deceased also appeared to have been sexually assaulted before she breathed her last.

Preliminary investigations indicated that Edwin Onditi Odada, who is the main suspect, was seen leaving Oduor’s house at around 4pm on that fateful day.

Detectives have established that the deceased had initially reported to her boyfriend that at one time on an earlier date, the suspect had attempted to rape her.

The suspect had been close friends with Oduor and they even resided together in the same house that the beastly act was committed.

Oduor had expelled Odada from the house after learning that he had attempted to rape his girlfriend, only for him to return on the fateful night where he found the deceased alone in the house, and resorted to strangling her to death.

Following the brutal murder, Dandora-based sleuths swung into action and conducted a nightlong operation where they successfully managed to arrest two suspects. Edwin Onditi Odada, the main suspect has since confessed to having committed the murder.

A second suspect, Samuel Juma Otieno, was found to be in possession of the deceased’s mobile phone.

Criminal records have revealed that Edwin Onditi Odada had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment by Oyugis high court following a case of defilement in the 2017. He was later released after a successful appeal in the 2020.

The two were arrested within Tushauriane area in Kayole on Wednesday and are currently cooling their heels at a Police facility awaiting arraignment.

PRESS RELEASE

THE POLITICAL WILL TO END POLITICAL TENSION ALREADY EXISTS

Lusaka ( 20.07.2022)

THE United Party for National Development has welcomed and agreed with calls by Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya to end political tension and bitterness in the country.

The call by Mr Kafwaya is in line what President Hakainde Hichilema has been championing before and after becoming Republican President.

To avoid political tension and bitterness after he was released from the 127 days of a trumped up treason trial, he forgave all those that were involved in raiding his house and arresting him for a trumped treason charge.

This is the man who after winning issued a decree to end political cadreism in public places to end political tension and violence against political party members.

This is also a man who has by all means embraced everyone in the public service all in a bid to end political rivalry considered as a drive of political bitterness and tension.

It is worthy to note that the UPND has been championing of peace and unity in the country as evidenced by President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment and always insisting to work with former President Edgar Lungu.

On a number of occassions Mr Hichilema has invited President Lungu as ‘Father of the Nation’ to represent the country on a number of State functions.

The Head of State, for instance, invited President Lungu during the funeral of fifth Republican President Rupiah Bwezani Banda and veteran politician Sikota Wina when he himself was denied an opportunity to bid farewell to Dr. Kenneth Kaunda when in opposition.

For UPND and its leadership, the party has always been ready to provide leadership with a peaceful environment and bring about unity and what the PF must do for now is to support President Hichilema’s peace efforts in the country just like Mr Kafwaya has said.

During the PF’s rule, citizens who identified themselves with the UPND and openely supported President Hichilema could not trade in markets and bus stations because they were being attacked.

There is fresh air across markets, bus stations and media houses since UPND formed government as there is no traceable attacks on these public instititutions, thanks to President Hichilema who made it clear just after being elected that cadresm would not be tolerated under his rule.

Calls by Mr Kafwaya must be taken seriously by all well meaning Zambians for the benefit of having a more united and peaceful country.

As a party, we also call upon Mr Kafwaya and entire PF rank and file to respect his views of supporting President Hichilema’s to remai united as a country.

We also agree with Mr Kafwaya that it is true there can only be one President at a time and must be respected.
Mr Hichilema must be respected as Head of State while President Lungu must also be recognised as Father of the Nation.

ECL’s Confession Of Being In Active Politics: The Silent Long-short Story

ECL’S CONFESSION OF BEING IN ACTIVE POLITICS: THE SILENT LONG-SHORT STORY

Recently, ECL’s admission that he was still politically active and a man of influence politically, has raised political eyebrows and washed out political lipsticks and facebpowder on many political commentators.

It has even attracted government reaction through Minister of Justice who has revealed that goverment has written to Cabinet over the issue with the possibility of cutting off the former President’s benefits.

The minister further disclosed in the Article carried by the NewsDiggers that ECL is still President of a political party, in this case PF.

Not knowing what ECL meant by being in Active Politics, his utterances are incriminating to him and offends the law which defines “Active Politics” to mean, under Chapter 15 of the Benefits of Former Presidents Act,

(a) the doing of any act indicating a person’s intention to hold elective or appointive office; or
(b) the holding of elective office or appointive office in a political party or in an organisation whose main aim is the furtherance of political objectives

By that statement from the former President, it meant the above by law and section 5(b) of the same law does not allow any former President to engage in active Politics or risk losing his/her entitlement such as security, salary, vehicles, residence among others.

The question therefore is, is it true ECL is still in active Politics especially that he announced his resignation through a letter to Secretary to Cabinet, last on 26 August, 2021!

Another question is, have the records at Registrar of Societies being amended and ECL does not appear as President of PF?

If the records still bear ECL as President of PF, then indeed, he is in active Politics and is not entitled to any benefit accrued to a former President.

Lastly, if ECL is not president on the Registar of Societies records, then PF is unnecessarily dragging the former President in active Politics and also undermining the Acting president, Given Lubinda.

It is politically incorrect for PF to be running to a retired president whose details are not in the Registrar of Societies records for any grievance yet the party president is around.

The earlier PF MPs and members accord Given Lubinda respect and recognition as one in charge of running the party, the better for the peace of the former President.

Suggestion To Strip ECL Of His Benefits Silly – Nakacinda

SUGGESTION TO STRIP ECL OF HIS BENEFITS SILLY – NAKACINDA

….. says to suggest that you can strip off the so called benefits, first of all, there is nothing to write home about benefits

Lusaka…. Wednesday, July 20, 2022 (Smart Eagles)

Patriotic Front (PF) Chairperson for Information and Publicity Raphael Nakacinda has laughed off threats by the New Dawn Administration to strip former president Edgar Lungu off of his benefits.

Following the remarks that president Lungu made when PF MPs went to pay solidarity to his wife Esther Lungu, Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe threatened that government will take the said action claiming that the former president is still politically active.

But Hon Nakacinda said the continued poking of president Lungu by President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND goes to undermine the Head of State’s capability to govern the country peacefully.

He said this when he addressed the media in Lusaka today.

“I want to address Mr Hakainde Hichilema as my elder brother. The bembas say mwikala patalala mwine apatalalika. Your continued poking of the former Head of State only goes to undermine your capability to govern this country peacefully,” he said.

“These little boys that are excited being in offices as ministers and so on like Haimbe are actually being used by external forces to undermine your office. President Hakainde Hichilema, the Patriotic Front and its members and all those that are supporters of president Edgar Lungu and supporters of the opposition political parties have nothing to lose.”

Hon Nakacinda also said there is nothing to write home about the so called benefits.

He charged that the country has not fully dignified the office of our former Head of State.

“You are the one that is in office. You are the one that has a greater responsibility to be able to use a high standard in your judgement in dealing with the citizens including the former Head of State. To suggest that you can strip off the so called benefits, first of all, there is nothing to write home about benefits, whether its financially or otherwise,” he said.

“This country has not fully dignified the office of our former Head of State in terms of benefits that you can talk about. So there is nothing really there to take away. The only thing I can advise is, like they say, you can defend a lion that is caged but the moment you open the cage, the lion will defend itself.”

Hon Nakacinda further told the President that, “otherwise, you are going to prang this nation into chaos.”

The PF MCC urged the UPND to stop what he termed as nonsense.

“President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has respected your Presidency from the time he left the inauguration at Heroes Stadium. He has constantly stayed at home. He has even minimized his movements to give you enough space for you to govern this country,” he said.

“You are the one who continues through your surrogates like Haimbe who continue to poke him out of his house. We advise, stop that nonsense.”

Police pick up Luanshya married woman and her lover after hubby dies in unclear circumstances

0

A romance between a 26-year-old married bar lady of Luanshya and her 23-year-old lover has ended in tears as the two are now lead suspects in the alleged murder of the woman’s husband.

Loveness Mwansa and her boyfriend Ben Sichali, a caretaker have been picked up for questioning by police to help with investigations after Kelvin Chanda was found unconscious at home and later pronounced dead by health authorities.

Mr Chanda, unemployed is believed to have died in unclear circumstances and now his brother Ian Chanda suspects foul play.

Police however, await postmortem examination results to determine as to what could have caused the death of Mr Chanda.

Copperbelt Province Commanding Officer Sharon Zulu said police have recorded a case of suspected murder after the brother of the deceased reported the incident which occurred between July 18th and 19th this year.

“Brief facts of the matter are that on on Tuesday this week, at 07:00 hours Francis Chewe, the cousin to the deceased decided to go to the couple’s home to check on Mr Chanda and when he reached the house, he found Ms Mwana. When Mr Chewe asked for his cousin, he was told by the wife that he was still sleeping as they slept very late the previous night,” she said.

Ms Zulu said that Mr Chewe is said to have left, but that he decided to sit at a nearby shop and after some time he saw people frequenting his cousin’s house .

“When he inquired what was happening, he was told that his cousin was not alright. He then rushed there and when he entered the house, he found Mr Chanda laying unconscious on the floor in the sitting room,” she said.

She said that Mr Chewe told police that while in the house ,he saw Ben come out of his cousins bedroom and that later, Mr Chanda, the now deceased was rushed to the clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Police have since picked up Ms Mwansa and Mr Sichali to assit with the investigations. When officers visited the scene of crime, they inspected the body thoroughly and found a black patch around the left eye of the deceased. The body has since been conveyed to Thomson District Hospital Mortuary awaiting post mortem to ascertain the actual cause of death,” she said.

The coincidences between Christianity and socialism- Dr Fred M’membe

The coincidences between Christianity and socialism
By Dr Fred M’membe

There are thousands more coincidences between Christianity and socialism than between Christianity and capitalism. Responding probably to different motivations, they both advocate attitudes and behaviours that are quite similar.

There’s great coincidence between Christianity’s objectives and the ones we socialists seek, between the Christian teachings of humility, austerity, selfishness and loving thy neighbour and what we might call the content of a revolutionary’s life and behaviour. For, what is the Socialist Party teaching its members and the Zambian people? To kill? To be selfish? To exploit others? Just the opposite. We are teaching them unwavering commitment to honest, equity, humility and solidarity.

We are telling them that our country right now may be too poor to give our people great material wealth, but it can give them a sense of equity and of human dignity. We socialists believe that Christ was a revolutionary par excellence. His entire doctrine was devoted to the humble, the poor; his doctrine was devoted to fighting against abuse, injustice and the degradation of human beings.

There’s a lot in common between the spirit and essence of Christ’s teachings and socialism.
And the Bible has very revolutionary content. The teachings of Christ are very revolutionary and completely coincide with our aims as socialists.

That is why we believe and openly say that we socialists are not the only revolutionaries. All those who truly follow Christ’s doctrine and devote themselves to the cause of the humble, the poor; and devote themselves to fighting against injustice, abuse and the degradation of human beings and to helping them liberate themselves are all revolutionaries.

Like we socialists, the Catholic social teaching does advocate the protection of property rights, but only when strongly situated within what is called the universal destination of goods. That is, “Christian tradition has never recognised the right to private property as absolute and untouchable: ‘On the contrary, it has always understood this right within the broader context of the right common to all to use the goods of the whole of creation: the right to private property is subordinated to the right to common use, to the fact that goods are meant for everyone.”
(Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, No. 177, quoting St. John Paul II’s Laborem Exercens). And because God intends the world to provide for the needs of every person, the distribution of resources must allow every human person with what is needed for a full life. Isn’t this what we socialists are advocating for?

In his encyclical “Pacem in Terris,” St. John XXIII explained: “Man has the right to live. He has the right to bodily integrity and to the means necessary for the proper development of life, particularly food, clothing, shelter, medical care, rest, and, finally, the necessary social services. In consequence, he has the right to be looked after in the event of ill health; disability stemming from his work; widowhood; old age; enforced unemployment; or whenever through no fault of his own he is deprived of the means of livelihood” (No. 11). Isn’t this what the Socialist Party’s manifesto is advocating for?

A defense of property, absent that context, functions to absolve those who own property from responsibility to those in desperate need. But Catholic teaching treats the withholding of resources from those in need as a failure of justice, and so private property always comes with a “social mortgage.”

Pope Leo XIII explained in his encyclical “Rerum Novarum”: “[W]hen there is a question of defending the rights of individuals, the poor and badly off have a claim to especial consideration. The richer class have many ways of shielding themselves, and stand less in need of help from the State; whereas the mass of the poor have no resources of their own to fall back upon, and must chiefly depend upon the assistance of the State” (No. 37). Isn’t this what we socialists are seeking?

And what is being advocated by the Catholic social teaching is not consistent with the capitalist social order. Even on religious liberty, the Catholic social teaching is saying that it must also respect the common good.

As capitalists, with their religious agents, seek to accord special recognition to Christianity or section of it, the “Compendium” says, “Such recognition must in no way create discrimination within the civil or social order for other religious groups” (No. 423). The church’s witness to the Gospel always requires (and Catholics must acknowledge that it often has failed in this) the defense of the well-being of persons who do not accept the Gospel, in keeping with the commands to love both neighbour and enemy. The purpose of the right to religious liberty within Catholic thought is both to make room for the church’s freedom to give witness to the Gospel and also to honour the call of God for every person to freely enter into communion with the divine life. These two purposes are not at odds. The church’s witness to the Gospel always requires the defense of the well-being of persons who do not accept the Gospel.

The document “Dignitatis Humanae,” promulgated at the Second Vatican Council, explains it thus: “It is…completely in accord with the nature of faith that in matters religious every manner of coercion on the part of men should be excluded. In consequence, the principle of religious freedom makes no small contribution to the creation of an environment in which men can without hindrance be invited to the Christian faith, embrace it of their own free will, and profess it effectively in their whole manner of life” (No. 10).

This makes it important to remember that Catholic teaching says the right to religious liberty “is not of itself an unlimited right. The just limits of the exercise of religious freedom must be determined in each social situation with political prudence, according to the requirements of the common good, and ratified by the civil authority through legal norms consistent with the objective moral order” (No. 422).

And speaking for myself, I can say that the ethical values that are propelling my revolutionary, socialist work came from my Catholic upbringing and education, from my teachers – the Capuchin Fathers, the Irish Christian Brothers and Sacred Heart Brothers. I would even say from my Christian family, home.

I was taught very early in my life that I should not lie. I was taught what was right and wrong, things that should and should not be done. I remember being punished by my Form 1 mathematics teacher at St John’s Secondary School to write 3,000 times, “Oh what a web we weave for ourselves when we first practice to deceive.” I had not done my homework and when asked about it, I lied that I had left it in the dormitory. I was told to go and get it. And immediately after I left classroom, the teacher told the class I was not going to come with any homework. He asked for a bet on it. When I came back empty-handed, the whole class burst into laughter. I have carried these words and memories of that day with me wherever I am and in whatever I do. And I remind my classmates of this incident whenever we meet. That was my baptism out of lying.

Later on, my revolutionary and political involvement began to create in me a feeling of what was wrong, the violation of an ethical standard, an injustice, abuse or fraud. I began to have an idea of what was fair and unfair. I began to have a concept of personal dignity. I think I have always had a sense of justice – from very early on – because of what I saw and experienced.

Undoubtedly, my Catholic upbringing and education influenced me a lot. The Capuchin Fathers, the Irish Christian Brothers and Sacred Heart Brothers inculcated a very strong sense of personal dignity in me, regardless of their political ideas which quite often I didn’t agree with. They valued character, rectitude, honesty, courage and ability to make sacrifices.

The Irish Christian Brothers definitely influenced me with their strict organisation, their discipline and their values. They contributed to my development and sense of justice. Following that path, I came to view abuse, injustice as unacceptable.

If you mix ethical values with a spirit of rebellion and rejection of injustice you begin to appreciate and place a high value on a number of things that other people don’t value at all. A sense of personal dignity, honour and duty form the main foundation that enables people to acquire political consciousness and a revolutionary spirit.

LUSAKA AU SUMMIT ROLL CALL. Who was AWOL?- Miles Sampa

LUSAKA AU SUMMIT ROLL CALL. Who was AWOL?

By Miles B. Sampa, MP

The just ended Lusaka summit had unprecedented low turnout both at lower ranking end and at Presidentual level. There was many theories but post Pandemic stigma on physical meetings cannot be ignored. It was also a mid term evaluations gathering and historically it does not receive much attention as does the January main summit. Only Presidents that are in Committee to produce reports tend to attend the mid year summit.

Presidents of neighboring countries are however expected to attend summits held in their region as a matter of soliderity to the hosting nation. I could only note the presence of Congo DR President Ettiene Chisekedi from the region.

My surprise absentee ‘landlords’ were Malawi and South Africa’s Lazarus Chakwera and Cyril Ramaposa respectively. I was not so surprised Zimbabwe’s 🇿🇼 Emmerson Mnagagwa did not make it but that is a topic for another day.

Achimwene (uncle) President Chakwera should have come by all means necessary but guess he only enjoys trips out of Africa to the USA and Europe where he can espouse his chizungu (accent) better.

As for Sir Ramaposa (CR) who was even on the Lusaka summit agenda to give a report on Pandemic progress in Africa, he may have hard a ka small ‘matter of urgent public importance’ to deal with back home. There are some public calls for the ANC to recall him following his pala pala farm scandle. About $8M cash was found hidden inside a sofa at his farm cottage. A brother to the maid ‘robbed’ the cottage and ‘accidentally’ took off with both the sofa and contents. Lol.

He was arrested in Namibia, imprisoned in SA and then paid some $50,000 or so never to tell the story.

This happened about 3 years ago and only leaked recently. The SA public is questioning President Ramaposa on his source of the huge US $ 8M cash to which he said he sold his animals (Cows and Buffaloes). Lol

So we can forgive CR for not attending our Lusaka Summit. We must actually empathize with his predicament as he could be the next Boris Johnson (famous BoJo😊) at the rate pressure is mounting on him.
Is Sir CR about to follow his predecessor Jacob Zuma who was also recalled by the ANC for condoning the state capturers (The Guptas)? Only time will tell.

On the local front we had winners and losers to the event. Those whose vehicles got hired (have a story to tell here) won some good money while those that never managed to get clients were left Ku wire. Hotels and Lodges that got clients made some big money. Pamodzi , Radisson, and Sarova hotel were fully booked entire summit period. Those that for some reason did not get guests, were also ‘hanged’ business-wise.

Restaurants also made money and personally took a few guest to taste our Zambian cuisine. Kumushi in the show grounds and one along Kwacha road were some of my Matebeto restaurants winners out of the summit. Took my guests there for meals and yes they paid in Dollars.

The Kwacha was also amongst winners and should pick up some strength once all Dollar payments from the summit are converted into the local currency.

Otherwise well done Zambia for successfully hosting the AU summit. It was ‘incident’ free 😊.

This is beginning of recruitment of public workers, says Cornelius Mweetwa

This is beginning of recruitment of public workers, says Mweetwa

By Kombe Mataka

SOUTHERN Province minister Cornelius Mweetwa says government opted to employ more primary than secondary school teachers to give life to the realisation of government policy of free education.
In the current recruitment exercise announced on Friday, slightly over 20 per cent of those recruited are secondary school teachers and degree holders.

Mweetwa acknowledged when he featured on Choma’s Manu Radio on Saturday that majority of secondary school teachers and many other categories had not been picked.

“I have seen on social media platforms where some people are saying they have been left out. And I want to clarify this. Yes, the advert was about 30,000 positions available. Those who came through to apply were more than a 100,000. Inevitably therefore, it meant that those who will be left out are the majority. And therefore, it should not surprise anybody that there will be people expressing grief or concern that they have been left out but we want to assure them that this is not the end of the game. This is the beginning of the business of recruitment of public workers,” he said. “The point I want to drive home is that in this teacher recruitment which was announced yesterday [Friday], the majority of those who have been recruited are primary school teachers. Those who applied as secondary school teachers, the majority have not been picked. The rational is simple, this recruitment is and was responding to the implementation of government policy of free education from grade one up to grade 12. And for those therefore who are entering the school system which is pyramidal in nature that you have more people entering school at grade one… So those who have been left out, the majority are in the bracket of secondary school teaching.”

Mweetwa said the government had shamed critics that thought the recruitment would not happen.
“Contrary to nay and doomsayers who predicted that in fact the government was playing hide and seek, delaying the announcement of names of those who were successful candidates, like we have done on free education; like we have done on CDF (Constituency Development Fund); like we have done on purchases of mattresses, beds and blankets for prisons; like we have recruited 30,000 teachers in one off recruitment process,” said Mweetwa. “We expect not to be praised but we expect the people to reclaim the lost confidence in the governance system. We insisted when in the opposition that we are going to govern by the rules of trust and honesty and hard work to ensure that the people can believe in their own government .”

Golf And Hotel Could Cost Victoria Falls Its Heritage Status

GOLF AND HOTEL COULD COST VICTORIA FALLS ITS HERITAGE STATUS

Victoria Falls earned world heritage status in 1989 but Unesco officials warn that this is under threat
Victoria Falls earned world heritage status in 1989 but Unesco officials warn that this is under threat

The United Nations will deliver an ultimatum to the governments of Zimbabwe and Zambia to immediately halt unsanctioned development at Victoria Falls or risk losing its unique heritage status, according to documents seen by The Times.

Unesco officials conducted a recent visit to the site to “assess the potential threat” to the natural wonder from plans for lodges, a golf course and a hydroelectric dam.

The area’s wildlife migration routes and unique rock structures, as well as world’s largest sheet of falling water, earned its world heritage site status in 1989.

An unusually punchy report for the next meeting of the world heritage committee warned that the southern African site is “facing increasing threats” from a number of developments inside the protected area which have not been signed off by heritage officials.

The job of monitoring infringements was “a particularly challenging task”, the monitoring team found after a five-day trip, citing the “inconsistency in the use of precise boundaries and buffer zones” on plans published by the authorities in Lusaka and Harare.

A lack of full transparency about ambitious projects on either side of the Zambezi river which feeds the falls is fuelling local rumours of corruption.

The Unesco team have called for a halt to the building of a 300-bed hotel complex on the Zambian side and provision for a golf course that disrupts an established elephant corridor.

Plans for a hydroelectric dam downstream of the falls “should not proceed as currently proposed”, the team said, in a list of blunt recommendations.

If development pressed ahead, the area’s special status “could be considered to be in danger in the near future”, the delegation said.

Local conservationists are concerned that the Unesco site visit in February did not even include some of the most sensitive areas being targeted as part of the Zimbabwe government’s ambitions for a tourism sector worth $5 billion by 2025.

A new 100-bedroom hotel upstream of the falls has just been announced. The delegation’s 35-page report makes no reference to the virgin riverine bush that has already been cleared for a restaurant, a stone’s throw from the western end of the falls, where a car park has already been gravelled.

Also unmentioned is the lease issued for commercial activity on Cataract Island, an environmentally sensitive rocky promontory. A $170 package has already been marketed for a picnic on the site where death-defying “selfies” can be taken in a natural pool on the lip of the falls.

The island is regarded as a unique rainforest biome, created by the permanent spray that can be seen 30 miles away from the falls’ torrents that crash more than 328ft (100m) into the Zambezi gorge. The mile-wide curtain of water is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders”.

The Cataract Island plan was first considered about five years ago but was shelved after public opposition grew.

Since the British explorer David Livingstone became the first European to reach Victoria Falls in 1855 — describing the approach along the Zambezi river as so exquisite that it “must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight” — there has been considerable change downstream.

Although both countries are under huge pressure to improve their citizens’ access to power, heritage officials said the proposal for a new hydroelectric dam “should not proceed as currently proposed”.

The Unesco World Heritage Committee is made up of 21 member states elected from the 194 countries that have ratified the World Heritage Convention. In 2019, Russia was elected to a four-year term. The committee was due to meet last month but a new date has yet to be set.

Woman with tummy ache goes to toilet and discovers she has given birth after seeing two feet in toilet

0

A 22-year-old woman had no idea she was pregnant until she went to the toilet, thinking she had a stomach ache, and saw a baby in the toilet bowl when she tried to flush.

Lucy Jones, a trainee flight attendant thought her stomach ache was period pain after feeling unwell back in March.

But while in bed the next morning, the 22-year-old said her tummy “flipped” and she dashed to the loo.

While using the toilet, she said she heard a “crash”, looked down and discovered the baby she didn’t know she was having.

The first-time-mum claims she was terrified as she had no idea she was expecting given she had no symptoms throughout her pregnancy. She added that she took contraception daily and still had her periods.

She also said she had a medical examination when she would have been eight months pregnant and two pregnancy tests came back negative.

She said she worked 70-hour per week, drank often and went clubbing around 15 times throughout her pregnancy, including just three days before she gave birth.

Now that her daughter, Ruby is four months old, Lucy said she’s taken to motherhood like a “duck to water” and wouldn’t change anything for the world.

Lucy, from Bristol, said: “I had no bump, no sickness and had a period every month.

“I had two negative pregnancy tests, because of my new cabin crew job I had to take them for that. I would have been eight months pregnant when I went for my medical and did the pregnancy tests.

“He [the doctor] pressed all down my stomach and body, and he suspected nothing. I was still taking the pill. I took it every day and had been on it for six or seven years.

“I went up one dress size after Christmas and then I went back down again, and I put that down to eating and drinking a lot.”

Lucy claims she received her fit to fly certificate the month before she gave birth.

She said she’d often work long hours as a pub manager and had her last shift just ten days before having Ruby, Daiilystar reports.

Lucy said: “I did a week’s training [for cabin crew] came home for two days and that’s when she magically arrived.

“I had tummy and back ache the night before but I was due my period at the end of the week so just put it down to that. I woke up in the morning, had a bath and just thought I’d sleep it off before I went back to Bristol for work.

“I was in bed for about 45 minutes and it felt like my stomach flipped, it’s the only way I can describe it, and I just felt like I needed a poo.

“I ran to the toilet and gave birth to my daughter in the toilet at home by myself. I heard a crash and looked down and there was two feet sticking out of the toilet.

“I didn’t have any pain. No-one could believe that. I had my back ache and tummy ache but there wasn’t actually any pain when I was physically, what I thought was pushing out a poo.”

Lucy said when she saw the baby in the toilet, she wrapped her daughter in a towel before placing her in the kitchen sink.

She was home alone at the time, called her dad and her parents arrived back around ten minutes later.

They also rang for an ambulance while they were on their way.

Lucy said: “I had no idea I was pregnant until I saw the baby in the toilet.

“I was hysterically screaming saying ‘there’s a baby’ and they were expecting there to be a miscarriage, not a full-sized seven-pound baby in their kitchen sink.

“I was terrified. I didn’t know what had hit me. It was just the shock. I felt numb in a way.

“When my parents walked through the door it all went a bit blurry because I think the shock just took over and I can’t really remember anything then until about 1pm when I was in the hospital.

“Dad described the kitchen – it just looked like a murder scene because when I’d ran from the toilet to the kitchen to get my phone the cord had snapped and there was just blood leaking out.

“It was up the walls, the door, fridge and freezer.”

Shortly after the paramedics arrived, Lucy was dashed to hospital in an ambulance.

Lucy said: “Properly holding her for the first time felt weird. I’d held babies, but never my own.

“Probably on day four or five it became reality. My dad rang around the family and when he told everyone there was just like silence on the phone, no-one could believe it.

“Even now as a family, we still can’t get our heads around what happened. There’s still moments where we’re like ‘wow’.

“It’s one of the stories that you read about, but you never think it would be you, your friend or someone you know.”

The aspiring cabin crew member engaged in weekly personal training sessions throughout her pregnancy. But stopped once she’d started her training and last went to the gym around two to three weeks before giving birth.

Lucy said: “I was still doing everything – going out drinking, partying, to festivals and the horse racing.

“In my personal training sessions I’d be doing squats, sit ups, press ups on the rowing machine and the bike and lifting weights.

“I used to go out drinking twice to three times a month. I went clubbing probably ten to 15 times when I was pregnant. I went clubbing in Bristol the Saturday before I gave birth.

“If I had a drink I’d sometimes socially smoke, but not every time I was drinking. I roughly had four cigarettes a month if that.”

Lucy isn’t the first woman to give birth in the toilet without knowing she was pregnant.

Back in April, it was reported that Lalene Malik, 23, didn’t know she was pregnant until she used the toilet and saw a baby’s hand inside the toilet bowl when she was about to flush

Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘higly unlikely’ to play for Man.United again and has ‘mentally moved on’, says Piers Morgan after speaking with him

0

Controversial journalist, Piers Morgan has disclosed that it is ‘highly unlikely’ that Cristiano Ronaldo will play for Manchester United again after speaking to the forward this week.

The Portuguese star only returned to Old Trafford last year, but after a disappointing campaign for the Red Devils, he infomed the club of his intention to leave if they received an appropriate offer this summer.

He has since not joined up with the squad for their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, and Morgan believes the 37-year-old has ‘mentally moved on’ from United.

‘I have had quite a lot of contact in the last week. I certainly think it’d be highly unlikely if Cristiano Ronaldo plays another game for Manchester United. I just think mentally he’s moved on,’ Morgan told talkSPORT.

If you’re him and coming towards the end of your career and you still want to win major trophies you’ve got to make a calculation. Am I going to do it if I stay at United?

‘I think he feels the club structure from the top down isn’t right. It’s not a reflection on the new manager [Erik ten Hag], he’s got a lot of respect for him, but it’s just an accurate reflection of where United are right now.

‘It’s for him to say what he feels but if you’re asking me then I don’t think he’s going to stay at Manchester United.’

So far, Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich have all rejected the opportunity to make a move for him in recent days.

He has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, although a switch to the Spanish club could prove controversial given his previous history with their cross-city rivals, and former club, Real Madrid.

Morgan thinks Ronaldo could end up somewhere unexpected, and has revealed that he is still trying to convince him to join Arsenal, the club he supports.

Morgan continued: ‘I think he could end up somewhere quite surprising.

‘Arsenal fans listening should know I’m doing everything in my power to try and persuade him to come to Arsenal.

‘And bearing in mind he was close to coming to Arsenal as an 18-year-old, he was about to sign under Arsene Wenger, and at the last minute he blitzed United in a friendly for Sporting Lisbon and Ferguson didn’t leave that game until he signed him.

I believe he’d be coming home!

‘Him up front with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah would be a fantastic forward line for us, so why not?’

Not all debt was bad debt after all- Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

Not all debt was bad debt after all
By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

In Zambia and as human beings in general, we focus mostly on the bad things and neglect good things.

Looking at the composition of our foreign debt, the one I hate most are Eurobonds. When government first issued Eurobonds, the country was full of joy the same way now everyone is clapping for everything without having a critical view.

I remember going to radio Ichengelo explaining to the public what Eurobonds were and their danger and as usual I received a hostile reaction from the then faithful some of whom are currently serving in government. Well if you look at our debt negotiations now, Eurobond holders are now giving us the most headaches and despite paying interest for many years, the principle remains the same.

Yesterday ZESCO revealed that Zambia has achieved an electricity generation surplus of 1,156MW (Megawatts) following the successful commissioning of 4x150MW capacity from the 750MW Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station.

ZESCO Managing Director Eng. Victor Mapani says currently the installed national generation capacity stands at 3,456.8MW against a peak national demand of approximately 2,300MW.

Eng. Mapani told a high-level Panel Discussion at the ongoing Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) meeting in Dakar, Senegal that ZESCO was using internally generated resources to progress the 750MW project, being constructed at a cost of approx.$2.3Billion to completion by November of 2022 at a cost of US $2.3Billion following non-disbursements by the project financiers.

According to Power technology the financing for the Kafue Gorge Lower power station is estimated at $2bn, which includes engineering, procurement and construction costs of $1.58bn, financing costs of $43m, the insurance cost of $100m and capitalised interest of $312m.

The project is being financed by the Zambian Government and foreign financial institutions, including the Exim Bank of China. The government allocated an initial investment of $186m for the project.

Now our external debt in 2021 was estimated in the region of $12.9bn of which at least $1.5bn can be attributed to the kafue lower gorge. Zesco MD has announced that with the completion of this project load shedding in Zambia is no more. His predecessor also made a similar pronouncement just last year.

With a surplus of 1000 MW, we can connect new houses and even survive a minor drought as compared to previous years. With energy supply we can now export power and raise revenue to even pay back some debt. No wonder we even signed a power export agreement with Namibia recently.

So am very sure as we demonise the past, we have to point out some positives. The way we demonise anyone who holds public office has really removed the eagerness of professionals to serve in government. Anyone holding public office is viewed as privileged and corrupt! I know our current youth don’t know this but it’s every government since unip that we have labelled corrupt!

Same even today, we need to critically analyse the goods and bads so that we do justice to ourselves. For example we need to continue building infrastructure because a country is all about infrastructure. Without schools we can’t employ teachers and without roads we can’t transport goods and services.

So let us continue building our nation and also consider alternative sources of project financing.

Those that leave legacy deserve credit and those that are in the process of creating their own legacy need support.

I rest my case

WHERE SHALL 30,000 TEACHERS STAY- Michael Kaingu

WHERE SHALL 30,000 TEACHERS STAY- KAINGU

By Fanny Kalonda

FORMER education minister Michael Kaingu says there is need to deal with the challenge of accommodation for teachers who have been recruited.

He said it looks like no one cares about where the teachers are going to be staying adding that the challenge is huge and should not be left to government alone.

Dr Kaingu said youthful teachers end up staying in villages while female teachers end up marrying villagers in order to find where to stay hence the need to deal with the accommodation challenge.

“My heartfelt congratulations to the new dawn government for recruiting over 30,000 teachers. However, it looks like nobody really cares about where these teachers will be staying. If there is a group of civil servants who suffer from lack of accommodation are teachers. Some schools which have expanded in both numbers of teachers and enrollment of pupils have only four houses which were built either during Northern Rhodesia or early UNIP government days,” he said. “The teaching service’s infrastructure is appalling to say the least. Just pose for a minute and ask the question, where shall over 30,000 teachers stay? Youthful teachers end up staying in villages, as for some of our female teachers end up marrying villagers in order to find where to stay.”

Dr Kaingu suggested that unions and the government contribute money to import prefabricated houses.
“When I was the minister of education, science, vocational and early education I wanted to tackle this problem. I called almost all the leaders of teachers’ unions to a meeting to discuss this heartbreaking problem. In that meeting I reminded them of this vexing problem. I told them that the only way we could solve this problem of teachers’ housing is by us coming up with a fund that would import prefabricated houses,” said Dr Kaingu. “Since the problem is huge it cannot be for the government alone, all unions must contribute some money to this fund and the ministry will too contribute to this fund. The teachers’ unions leaders were so excited about it and we resolved that we should quickly establish a modality for creating the fund. Unfortunately, the ministry was soon to be split into two and I was sent to the ministry of higher education. I don’t know how far this initiative has been taken. If this initiative can help in creating new houses for teachers, I propose that it is relooked into. I hope and pray that there is a union leader out there who can remember this meeting. However, if there is none I pray this idea sits well with my colleagues both in the Ministry of Education and unions leaders.”

Antonio Mwanza has challenged justice minister to state which law he will use to terminate Edgar Lungu’s benefits

0

PF Media Director Antonio Mwanza has challenged justice minister Mulambo Haimbe to state which law he will use to terminate former president Edgar Lungu’s benefits.

He is reacting to Mr Haimbe’s remarks quoted by News Diggers that president Lungu should not be enjoying his benefits since he declared being in active politics, and that a position from the Attorney General’s chambers has been sent to Cabinet Office.

Mr Mwanza, however, says president Lungu is not in active politics.

Below is his full statement:

Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe says the UPND government plans to terminate President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s retirement benefits alleging that the former President is in active politics.

Let’s look at the facts:

  1. Chapter 15 of the
Benefits of Former Presidents Act defines what being in “active politics” means.

Interpretation;

In this Act ( The Benefits of Former Presidents Act) unless the context otherwise requires—

“active politics” means—

(a) the doing of any act indicating a person’s intention to hold elective or appointive office; or

(b) the holding of elective office or appointive office in a political party or in an organisation whose main aim is the furtherance of political objectives.

According to the law as quoted above, President Edgar Lungu is not in active politics so what law will Haimbe and UPND use to terminate his retirement benefits? Unless they want to amend the current law, otherwise Haimbe and his team are totally offside.

  1. President Edgar Lungu like any other Zambian has the Constitutional right under the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia to freely express himself without fear or retribution and to try to gag him using threats of withdrawal of his retirement benefits is immoral, unconstitutional and totally unacceptable.

It is buffoonery of the worst kind to go after President Lungu’s family and expect the man to remain quiet while his son, his daughter and his wife are being persecuted and threatened through the abuse of Law Enforcement Agencies.

What kind of a husband and a father can remain mute while his own wife and children are being persecuted? President Lungu has every right and reason to protect and defend his family; that’s the normal and expected thing to do.

  1. We are not naive to note that UPND are scared of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. They have seen how loved and admired the man is. This is evident by the positive manner in which majority Zambians react every time a picture or story of President Edgar Lungu pops up on social media; and in the warped minds of the UPND they think President Lungu is coming back to politics so they are trying everything within their power to silence the man and tarnish his image.

The man is retired. Leave him alone. Let him enjoy his retirement in peace. Stop persecuting his family. If you have evidence of his wrongdoing take the appropriate legal steps as provided by the Constitution instead of mentally and physically tormenting him and his family.

  1. UPND must know that no matter how much they try to rewrite history and attempt to tarnish the image of President Edgar Lungu, they can never take away the massive infrastructure development among many other social and economic developments that the President Lungu and his compatriots in PF achieved for Zambia during their time in office. They left an indelible mark of excellency and no amount of lies and propaganda will change that.

UPND must concentrate on fixing the economy and delivering on their many fake promises instead of spending all their time and energy trying to kill and bury President Lungu and the PF.

People are suffering and that should be the priority number one for the UPND instead of wasting time trying to annihilate President Lungu and the Patriotic Front.

Governments come and go and the very seed of bitterness, hatred and vengeance that UPND is planting today will germinate and eat them when their time to leave office comes.

If I could get a moment with former President Edgar Lungu this is what I would be saying to him- Pilato

A MOMENT WITH PRESIDENT LUNGU

By Pilato

Ideally, I do not find pleasure talking about opposition parties or members of the opposition parties for reasons known to myself. I believe members of the opposition parties should take it upon themselves to hold their leaders accountable and inform the direction their parties should take. A few weeks or days ago, I saw a video of President LUNGU addressing the media after Mama Esther LUNGU was summoned to appear before DEC for interviews. I told myself never to comment on the issue. But today here I am, it is difficult to ignore.

If I could get a moment with former President Edgar Lungu this is what I would be saying to him.

Sir, you are no longer a president of Zambia but now a “president “ of an era in our history. You do not represent the PF but a phase in the building of our country. Stop worrying about your political life, it doesn’t exist anymore, be concerned with the life of our country. This is a country that holds all that is possible for everyone. Be concerned with the well-being of its people beyond your political inclinations.

I do understand how difficult this phase could be BUT resist the temptation to prolong the difficult phase by careless and emotional expressions. Please do the following;

1) Structure your office as the 6th President of the republic of Zambia.

2) Build a team of professionals to work with including a spokesperson away from your political networks.

3) Build or improve mechanisms for your interactions with the government in Zambia and those outside.

There is life after politics and the presidency. There is more you can offer to this country and to the world both as a senior citizen and as a former president. See beyond your personal loss, there is a whole world stage for you waiting for you to claim it.

It is too late to change the past but on time to build a better future.

‘Brenthurst capture of State House’

0

The Mast Editorial
‘Brenthurst capture of State House’

Last Thursday, President Hakainde Hichilema conferred the Order of the Eagle of Zambia, First Division on former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson (Liberia) and Ernest Bai Koroma (Sierra Leone) for their distinguished efforts in promoting democracy.

The awardees are advisory board members of Brenthurst Foundation, a mining lobby group established by the Oppenheimer family.

And Emmanuel Mwamba has repeatedly over many months said “Brenthurst Foundation is also in State House and meets the cost of private advisors to the President”.

“There is an advisory unit at State House that is on their private pay role. They are many. I don’t want to mention them. Then we have two from South Africa. I don’t want to offend people but it is the
truth,” says Mwamba, a former high commissioner to South Africa. “The concern there is, why would you have special advisors to the President that are funded by a private entity when the government has provided for special advisors? They are catered for. I mean, we don’t need outsiders. The relationship with Brenthurst Foundation promotes corporate, commercial and private interest. That is our objection and this is called State Capture in other countries. Brenthurst Foundation has captured our President [Hakainde Hichilema]. They are making him honour board members of Brenthurst Foundation. All those that were honoured are members of Brenthurst Foundation. State House is the heart of power in our country. It cannot be defiled in the manner the President has allowed it to be defiled where we have this private interest funding.”

This is an extraordinarily alarming statement which many have expressed doubts concerning its veracity. Our sources at State House have now confirmed that indeed a presidential advisor working full-time at State House, is the daughter of a former Zambian president and is on the payroll of Brenthurst Foundation. The source asked “have you ever seen her being sworn in like all other presidential advisors? Is this not a serious national security breach? Who other than the President does the seconded advisor to Hakainde Hichilema report to? Greg Mills? What was Hakainde thinking? Could he not have appointed this presidential advisor like he did all others and put her on government payroll? Why was it necessary for him to accept a Zambian presidential advisor to be on the Brenthurst Foundation payroll? Hakainde must explain to the nation.’’

In any other country, such a breach of national security would immediately attract an independent inquiry and the President would face very serious consequences. It is now an established fact that Hakainde is beholden to Brenthurst Foundation as can be seen from his various indiscretions. First, he lied that he was going to South Africa to promote investment, when in fact he was there to launch a book written by Greg Mills. Secondly, his clandestine trip to Lower Zambezi at the Brenthurst Foundation Security Conference recently. Thirdly, the presence of Greg at the initial negotiating meetings with Vedanta over Konkola Copper Mines with his other business partner.

It is also abundantly clear that Hakainde in honouring Obasanjo, Sirleaf Johnson and Koroma, was not about anything else other than honouring the Brenthurst Foundation. We say this because if Hakainde truly believed the reasons he gave for honouring these former presidents, then why did he also not honour Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania who played an important role during and after the August 2021 elections? Kikwete was the one who was heavily involved in shuttle diplomacy which led to Edgar Lungu accepting defeat during the power transition mediation brokered by late Rupiah Banda.

We urge Hakainde to search his soul and start to de-escalate. It’s too much of him stressing the nation unnecessarily with his business acquaintances. He cannot continue on a path of pitting himself against citizens!

Margaret Wheatley tells us that, “Leadership is a series of behaviours rather than a role for heroes.”

And Martin Luther King Jr noted that, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

Dr Mushimba Applauds The New Dawn Administration Over Teacher Recruitment

DR MUSHIMBA APPLAUDS THE NEW DAWN ADMINISTRATION OVER TEACHER RECRUITMENT

….says PF would have done the same considering it’s massive infrastructure development

Lusaka…. Wednesday, July 20, 2022 (Smart Eagles)

While acknowledging that arrogance kicked PF out of power last year, Former Minister of Higher Education Dr. Brian Mushimba has hinted that the former ruling party would have equally employed teachers had it won elections.

Dr Mushimba explained that the PF had laid down the foundation on which the New Dawn Administration recruited the teachers.

He indicated that the PF had heavily invested in infrastructure which had decongested schools and has now created room for additional staff and learners.

Dr Mushimba said this when he featured on a special program on TV Bakwetu.

“With PF there was a lot of push on creating an environment before taking advantage of that environment. There was a lot of push in creating the infrastructure… the massive recruitment that the UPND has been able to do is on the back of the massive infrastructure the PF constructed. If PF had won, probably this conversation is what we would also be having now,” he said.

Dr Mushimba has however applauded the New Dawn Administration for the recruitment. He however said access and quality of education must go hand in hand.

And Dr Mushimba said that it will take a while for teachers to be put on payroll.

“This is a promise that the UPND made to the party and every time a government that promised achieves what it promised, we need to recognize,” he said.

“Even here the 30,000 plus teachers that have been recruited, it’s not going to be just like snapping fingers they are on payroll. It’s going to be a problem to get them on payroll. It’s a government wide problem that needs to be addressed.”

Dr Mushimba urged the New Dawn Administration to reform the government system.

“We hope the New Dawn Government is not going to inherit the shortfalls and weaknesses in the system and live with them for the next five years. Because they will become the decampaigning point for them when they go into 2026,” he said.

“We urge them to step back, understand the challenges that are there and find a model that can address this systematically and I will not run away from this word called reform. If they don’t reform how government functions, they will face the consequences.”

Will the August 2022 Kenyan election be once again mired in judicial intervention?

Will the August 2022 Kenyan election be once again mired in judicial intervention?

By Dr Munyonzwe Hamalengwa

All eyes are turning once again to the upcoming heavily contested Kenyan elections in August 2022 whereby a perennial presidential contender in the name of Raila Odinga, this time supported by his perennial presidential rival and outgoing President, Uhuru Kenyatta, ironically is going against the current Vice-President William Ruto.

It is not usual that the current President opts to support an opposition candidate against his own Vice-President. This makes interesting political drama and it is being lived up to its billing in Kenya. This set of political matrix is interesting in itself in the Kenyan context, in that the Vice-President since the death of Jomo Kenyatta in 1978, has always assumed the presidency. But this time President Kenyatta and his deputy Ruto fell apart. The Vice-President has injected the drama by pledging to probe corruption of the outgoing President, Uhuru Kenyatta. This articulation in normal times could secure the presidency to the current Vice-President. This is like self-suicide; it would involve elements of self-probing as he was part of the regime he would be probing. But these are not normal times in Kenya. The colloquial “Deep State” is alleged to support Odinga because this time he is being backed by his historical nemesis, Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of the first President, Jomo Kenyatta under whom the first vice-president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila’s father served before the two fell out, leaving a trail of bitterness of decades between these two families who were once very close and this rivalry continued between the two respective sons. The conclusion of the historical political family hatred between the Kenyattas and Odingas is wrapped in this election and the spin-off is the now infamous Kenyatta-Rutto grindstone.

This August election is also dynamically interesting as it is backgrounded by the massive election violence of 2007/2008 which resulted in the current President Kenyatta and his current Vice-President and presidential contender Rutto being dragged before the International Criminal Court to answer to the charges of committing international crimes. The charges were dropped allegedly because the two tampered with witnesses, weakening the case. These two despite this gluing bond and experience, are now on opposite camps. The presidential candidate Ruto campaigning on the platform promising to expose the corruption practices of his outgoing President.

The 2013 election which Kenyatta won and appointed Ruto to be Vice-President, was mired in a tumultuous presidential election petition in which the court backed off from declaring the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as null and void for election irregularities. It appeared that contested globally televised judicial process, was a trial run to the 2017 presidential election at which the Supreme Court of Kenya became the first court in Africa to declare a presidential election outcome null and void. The two contestants in that election petition were the now current allies, Kenyatta and Odinga. But when Kenyatta lost the petition, he was livid and threatened to do political damage to the judiciary, a judiciary that had gained credibility because of the judicial reforms that came out of the ashes of the 2007/8 near civil war in Kenya which had led Kenyatta and Ruto to be dragged before the International Criminal Court. This judiciary had further enhanced its credibility and global good reputation by being the first judiciary in Africa to declare null and void a declared presidential victory.

The judiciary whether of international or local jurisdiction has been involved in Kenyan election outcomes from 2007/8 through 2013 to 2017 and involving Kenyatta and Ruto.

Will the Kenyan judiciary be involved again in resolving any election disputes that may arise in this so far dead even political war? This time the protagonists would be Odinga/Kenyatta on one side and Ruto with his presidential running mate on the other hand. The Kenyan judiciary that Kenyatta had vowed to destroy has already secured its credibility in the eyes of the court of public opinion in Kenya and the world. And if it gets involved again in resolving the Kenyan electoral outcome, it’s pronouncement will be judged credible. The possible involvement of the Kenyan judiciary in any election disputes after the fact, bodes well for Kenyan democracy as the credibility of the Kenyan judiciary acts as a deterrent to any possible engagement by particularly presidential contenders in any electoral malpractices. They know that there is a credible Kenyan judiciary watching over them and that there is a particularly articulate Kenyan legal profession that is horned and battle tested in judicial elections warfare. The International Criminal Court, already involved in an election dispute in Kenya, will be in the wings waiting for action.

UK temperature reaches 40 degrees for first time as European countries battle massive wildfires in record heatwave

0

Firefighters in southwestern France, Southern and western Germany and Belgium battled on Tuesday, July 19 to contain massive forest wildfires while the UK recorded its highest ever temperature of 40 degrees in record heatwave.

The temperature of more than 40C (104F) was provisionally recorded on Tuesday for the first time ever in Britain, the Met Office said.

Scientists have attributed the record heatwave in Europe to climate change.

Also authorities have put Britain on a state of “national emergency” over the unprecedented temperatures as the nation often struggles to maintain key transport services when hit by unexpected weather such as heavy snow or high winds.

Transport minister Grant Shapps said it would take many years to fully upgrade Britain’s infrastructure to cope with higher temperatures, after at least two airport runways showed signs of damage and some train tracks buckled.

“We’ve seen a considerable amount of travel disruption,” Shapps told the BBC. “Infrastructure, much of which was built from the Victorian times, just wasn’t built to withstand this type of temperature.”

In southwestern France, the wine-growing Gironde region saw its biggest wildfires in over 30 years.

The fires have spread across 19,300 hectares (about 75 sq miles) in the countryside surrounding Bordeaux since July 12, forcing a total of 34,000 people to evacuate their homes.

About 2,000 firefighters, supported by eight water-bomber aircraft, were battling the blazes.

“Despite attacks from the ground and from the air, the situation has still not stabilised,” the state prefecture said in a statement, adding there had been no reports of death or injury.

With human-caused climate change triggering droughts, the number of extreme wildfires is expected to increase 30% within the next 28 years, according to a February 2022 U.N. report.

More than 30 wildfires continued to ravage parts of Spain, with authorities paying special attention to four blazes in Castile and Leon and Galicia.

So far this year 70,000 hectares (173,000 acres) have been burned in Spain, around twice the average of the last decade, official data showed before the heatwave.

In Greece, firefighters tackled 73 fires within 24 hours, the fire brigade said on Monday. The civil protection authority has warned of a very high risk of fires across the country on Tuesday.

Man Raped Two Witches Caught In His Backyard For Hours

Man Raped Two Witches Caught In His Backyard For Hours
A 43-year-old widower from Saselamani outside of Giyani south Africa locked two women inside his house and sexually assaulted them for hours.

According to his neighbours, who were ready to burn the suspected witches, Alfred took quite an unusual route in handling the situation.

“There was no doubt we caught them performing witchcraft, and they were supposed to be burned. On my way to work at around 4 AM, I saw the two naked women stuck inside Alfred’s yard.”

“I called him to come out, and I was rounding up other community members to bring petrol and tires to do what needed to be done. Alfred said not to worry. He will deal with them his way and dragged them inside his house and locked the doors.”

His neighbour, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he heard screams and moaning coming from the house, and Alfred was refusing to open the door.

“I decided to call the police who arrived a few hours later. I thought if he killed them both alone, he was going to jail for murder as opposed to mob justice, the police came and kicked down the door, and it was something I’ve never seen before. The floor was wet with a mixture of his manly fluid and their womanly fluids. He had tied them to the table. He was acting like an animal.”

Police took all three of them to the local police station, and they were all released that same day. The women refused to open a case against Alfred even though he abused them for over three hours. In his own words, Alfred said he did what he did because he figured they already bewitched him.

He said a prophet told him two women are busy putting a curse on him not to marry again, so he wanted to take his sexual frustration out on them.

The police said they let Alfred go after the three of them shook hands and agreed not to bother each other again. “Alfred wanted the two women to say they will no longer bewitch him if they want to be safe from him.”

If All MPs Worked Like You, Zambia Would Have Been A Better Place – Kabushi Residents Praises The Bulldozer

IF ALL MPS WORKED LIKE YOU, ZAMBIA WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER PLACE – KABUSHI RESIDENTS PRAISES THE BULLDOZER
….as the Lawmaker reechoes that had PF still been in power, he would have changed the face of Kabushi even much more
Ndola…. Tuesday, July 19, 2022 (Smart Eagles)
“Continue having the heart for the people, continue working for the people” and many other heartwarming comments are the ones that Kabushi residents showered the Bulldozer today as he appeared on the MP’s Diary with Posent Ndovi.

Despite a few complaints, the callers testified that Hon. Bowman Chilosha Lusambo has utilized his time in office to better the lives of the residents in the Constituency.

Amongst the many people who called in during the program is Katongo Bweupe who said Hon Lusambo is a good man.

“I was in Ndola two months ago. I want to thank Bowman; he is a good man. He just needs to work on the roads. Otherwise you have worked. If all MPs in the country were like you, Zambia would have been a better place,” she said.

Meanwhile, Hon Lusambo said he would have changed the face of Kabushi Constituency if PF was in power today.
He however acknowledged that the cry on the roads are genuine.

“The cry on the roads is a genuine cry. We are working, we are bulldozing. Maybe I am the fourth or the fifth constituency which has been approved to use the CDF out of 156 constituencies. The people of Kabushi actually received a 31 killometer road project and we started with Lubuto. We were supposed to do the Chiwala road. Chiwala road if the longest road from Ndola Kitwe road which goes up to Twapya,” he said.

“Everything started very well and if PF was in government today, we would have changed the face of Kabushi because everything was on course. The contractor was on site doing the Ndola Lubuto road and from Lubuto he was supposed to come to Chiwala road.”

He further explained that “from Chiwala road we needed to do Chitupi road and many other selected roads. Our time to work on the roads came from between 2019 to 2020.”

“By the time they were finishing the procedure it was 2021. But we started the roads in Kabushi and if you go to RDA, the list of the roads which were picked is still there.”

ZESCO Declares 1,000 Mw Surplus In Power Generation Capacity

0

ZESCO has revealed that Zambia has achieved an electricity generation surplus of 1,156MW (Megawatts) following the successful commissioning of 4x150MW capacity from the 750MW Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station.

ZESCO Managing Director Eng. Victor Mapani said currently the installed national generation capacity stands at 3,456.8MW against a peak national demand of approximately 2,300MW.

“Currently four out of five units are already commissioned and running. We expect to commission the last 150MW machine, unit 5 by November this year. With this development, and factoring in Independent Power Producers, we currently stand at a national generation installed capacity of 3,456.8MW, against a peak national demand of approximately 2,300MW. We thus have a surplus of 1,156.8MW that is available for trade within the interconnected SAPP network,” said Eng. Mapani

Eng. Mapani, who is the immediate Past President of Association of Power Utilities in Africa (APUA), was making a presentation under the theme – implementation of the 2063 Agenda of the African Union with respect to the development of the power sector in Zambia.

He said the availability of reliable electricity is underpinning the current rebound of Zambia’s economy.

“Since we are able to meet national demand, we have seen Zambia’s economy grow from a receding Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020 to three (3) percent growth in 2021 across all sectors. With this background, we are ambitious that the national GDP growth will soon reach levels of (5) five to (7) seven percent in the next (3) three to (5) five years,” he said.

“The stable economic growth has also seen year-to-year end inflation drop from 21 percent to 9.7 percent in the month of June 2022. Our service virtually services and supports all key sectors including mining, agriculture, commerce, tourism, health and education. We now hope to venture and exploit the transportation sub-sector too through establishment of charging points nationwide to back the evolution of Electric Motor Vehicles,” he added

Zambia, an established member of both the APUA and the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP) is currently undertaking construction of transmission lines to ensure ZESCO remains at the centre of power trading among the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern African states.

ZESCO is currently anchoring the construction of the transmission line to connect Zimbabwe-Zambia-Botswana-Namibia (ZiZaBoNa) Interconnector while at the same time is collaborating on the Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya (ZTK) Interconnector.

ZESCO already operates strong regional interconnectors which include the Kariba 330kV lines to ZESA, Zimbabwe; the Sesheke-NamPower 220kV line to Namibia, the CEC 220kV lines to SNEL in DRC and the Kazungula-Kasane 66kV line to Botswana.

Other strong regional transmission lines include cross-border power supplies including the Mafinga-ESCOM 33kV line with Malawi; the 33/11kV border supplies with SNEL (Democratic Republic of Congo) and the Mbala-Sumbawanga 66kV Line and Mbozi-Tunduma 33kV Line to Tanzania.

Borussia Dortmund striker, Sebastian Haller breaks silence after he was diagnosed with a testicular tumour

0

Borussia Dortmund striker, Sebastian Haller has spoken out for the first time since he was diagnosed with a testicular tumour.

The Bundesliga side confirmed the news on Monday evening, July 18, after Haller felt ‘unwell’ in training earlier that day.

In a message on his social media accounts, Haller thanked everyone for their messages of support and insisted he’s determined to ‘come back stronger’.

Haller said: ‘I want to thank you again from the bottom of my heart for all these many warm messages received I was very moved to see these beautiful reactions and I even feel like I don’t deserve so much.

‘But I know that thanks to you it will only be one more test on our way. See you very soon in the ground to celebrate our next victories.’

He also added: ‘Thank you all for your many messages of support and affection since yesterday’s announcement. My family and I thank you. I will now focus on my recovery to come back stronger.’

Haller only joined Dortmund earlier this month on a £31million deal after the ex-West Ham striker had a prolific season at Ajax.

The Bundesliga side, in a statement on Monday wrote: ‘Borussia Dortmund striker Sebastien Haller had to leave the BVB training camp in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland early due to illness and has already travelled back to Dortmund,’ the statement read.

‘The 28-year-old international from the Ivory Coast complained of being unwell after training on Monday morning.

‘In the course of intensive medical examinations, a tumour was finally discovered in the testicles during the course of the day. During the coming days, further examinations will take place in a specialised medical centre.

‘Borussia Dortmund asks that the privacy of the player and his family be respected and that no questions be asked. As soon as we have further information, we will inform you in consultation with the player.’

The club’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl has admitted that the news has left everybody shocked, and has insisted that Dortmund will support Haller with his recovery.

‘This news today came as a shock to Sebastien Haller and to all of us. The entire BVB family wishes Sebastien a full recovery as soon as possible and that we can hug him again soon.

‘We will do everything in our power to ensure that he receives the best possible treatment,’ he said.

Republicans launch bill that would require fathers to pay child support to unborn babies

0

The Republicans have launched a new bill that would require a father to pay child support throughout a pregnancy, from conception to childbirth.

Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D. (pictured above), introduced the Unborn Child Support Act last week that would amend the Social Security Act to “ensure that child support for unborn children is collected and distributed under the child support enforcement program”.

Under the bill, mothers would be able to request child support from the moment of conception and would even be able to collect the payments retroactively if paternity was not established until birth.

The bill has nine Republican co-sponsors in the Senate – Marco Rubio and Rick Scott Fla., Marsha Blackburn, Tenn., Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker, Miss., James Lankford and Jim Inhofe, Okla., and Steve Daines, R-Mont.

This comes after Roe vs. Wade was overturned, reversing women’s rights to abortion. Activists then argued that if women should be forced to carry children they don’t want, men should be forced to pay for the children from conception

The bill looks to remedy such criticisms.

“I hope good legislation, like the Unborn Child Support Act, gets more support now that the Dobbs decision encourages us to look more seriously at supporting mothers and their unborn children,” said Senator Hyde-Smith in a statement.

“Caring for the well-being of our children begins long before a baby is born. It begins at the first moment of life – conception – and fathers have obligations, financial and otherwise, during pregnancy,” Sen. Kevin Cramer said.

However, there are concerns sponsors of the bill could also have an alternative motive. Amending federal law to say that child support is owed during pregnancy could help clear the way for a federal abortion ban by establishing that legal personhood begins at conception.

Cramer and a number of the child support bill’s co-sponsors are also co-sponsors of a stalled bill that would establish the right to life begins at the moment of fertilization.

“This is not the first time they’ve tried to insert this personhood language into a national bill,” Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund co-founder Laurie Bertram Roberts told the Mississippi Free Press.

“And see, the way they’re doing it is very sneaky, the way they’re doing it is under the guise of, ‘Oh look, doesn’t this make sense?’ Because this is one of those arguments that has been coming from people who actually support abortion, which is why I tell people not to make these arguments, even in jest, like, ‘If y’all want to make us have babies, start child support at the moment of conception’.”

Meanwhile, the bill has received mixed reactions from celebrities.

50 Cent shared a screenshot of the news report and wrote: “Ok fu*k this. I quit.”

CAPITALISM, SOCIALISM AND DEMOCRACY- Dr Fred M’membe

CAPITALISM, SOCIALISM AND DEMOCRACY
By Dr Fred M’membe

Those who want to smear socialism often try to equate it to dictatorship. In a world in which peace truly reigns, democracy can take many forms of expression in a fair society. In a world in which the world hegemony of the mightiest imperialist power reigns and the peoples’ sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence are threatened, democracy will have many forms of expression. For instance, China, Cuba and Vietnam – in their exceptional circumstances – have each found their own form of expression of democracy, and we believe it suits their own conditions ideally. Given what they have gone through, they couldn’t have withstood the imperialist hatred, onslaught, blockade, threats, acts of aggression if their people weren’t politically aware and united.

For us, democracy means that governments are closely linked to the people, have the support of the people and devote themselves entirely to working and struggling for the people and the people’s interests. Democracy implies defense of all the rights of citizens, including the right to independence, freedom, national dignity and honour. For us, democracy means fraternity and true equality among men and women and equal opportunities for all men and women, for every human being who is born.

Capitalist or bourgeois democracy doesn’t contain any of these elements. How can they talk of democracy in a country where a minority has immense fortunes and others have nothing? What kind of equality or fraternity can exist between a beggar and a millionaire or billionaire? What rights do the poor, the dispossessed and the exploited have? In capitalism, it’s an old trick, an old tale, an old story. What they have done is establish a system of domination with all the resources of wealth, publicity and everything else in the hands of a class that maintains discrimination and excludes the rest of society from any real participation and from any real possibility of exercising their rights.

What they usually call democracy is a mechanism that serves as a tool; it’s a system that includes not only the political but also the economic and social ideas of imperialism. For us, democracy is something else. We think that the exploitation of one human being by another must disappear before you can real democracy. We are absolutely convinced of that. As long as there is enormous inequality among human beings, there isn’t – there can’t be – any democracy. And where there’s subordination to another country, that must disappear, too, before democracy can exist.

If lack of democracy in the world were the preamble to social change, capitalism would have disappeared already, because capitalism was developed on the basis of force, repression and slavery, especially of Africans. True democracy can exist only in fair, just and humane social system, a socialist system.

In the conditions of our country – Zambia – we believe we can achieve our goals through a multiparty political dispensation. And it shouldn’t be forgotten, or if it is not known it should be known, that the July 1990 return to a multiparty political dispensation project was a socialist project initiated by socialists Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika and Mbita Chitala. And both are still alive to testify to this. I can speak about this with absolute confidence because I was a participant in that project.

JAMES NDAMBO WELLCONNECTED…but I don’t think he has any political ambitions – Kavindele

NDAMBO WELL
CONNECTED
…but I don’t think he has any political ambitions – Kavindele

By Kombe Mataka

FORMER vice-president Enoch Kavindele has called for respect among leaders in the country.
Meanwhile, Kavindele says James Ndambo is a serious businessman with connections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“When I was talking to him, although he lives in South Africa, 75 per cent of his businesses were in the DRC. So to me it would appear he is a genuine businessman with intentions of assisting people here. I don’t think he has any political ambition. He is doing extremely well and very connected in the DRC,” Kavindele told The Mast.
Kavindele further says while he does not know much about President Hakainde Hichilema’s relationship with Brenthurst Foundation, it looks to be a serious group.

He said for any leader, personal interest should not supersede that of the State.
He noted that there was so many squabbles among leaders in the country.
“That is totally unnecessary. You see [leadership] revolves amongst human beings. Today it can be A in office and tomorrow, B. The country will always be there,” Kavindele said.

He said those that have left power must respect that those in office.
“So it is very important that those who assume power especially through a democratic process are respected and indeed those who are have left power are respected. It does not auger well for people at the level of presidency to start exchanging harsh words about each other as we are seeing. It is most unwelcome and it should not be allowed to continue. It should not be,” he advised.

And Kavindele said there was nothing sinister about the honouring of former heads of state of Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Bai Koroma and Ellen Sirleaf Johnson respectively with the Order of the Eagle of Zambia First Division.

“It has happened several times. In fact, even some presidents who come for state visits may end up getting one of these (honours). Kamuzu Banda got it. Robert Mugabe got it. It has happened several times,” he recalled. “These are special people. Koroma played a role in our last election that is why he has been recognised. Obasanjo, the former head of state, has been in different places including during the inauguration of President Hakainde and Madam Sirleaf was the first female in Africa to be head of state. All the three have had a steering role on the transfer of power. They have all gone through a democratic process. This is also one way of encouraging African leaders to do the correct things. There is a lot of instability on the African continent and the role these three are playing is very important in making sure that that this is right way to go all the time. Power should only change through a democratic process.”

Kavindele said he did not know the relationship President Hichilema personally had with members of the Brenthurst Foundation but that it had a lot of distinguished people.

“I have no idea of the relationship that the President may have personally with those people but I can tell you one thing is that amongst the members of the Foundation who were introduced, there are former ministers in many other countries including the minister of finance of Costa Rica and the European Union, former president of Ethiopia and former president of South Africa [Kgalema] Motlanthe. Now those are very serious people. So if they have a foundation, I would like to believe that it is a very serious foundation. Whether those are Mr Hichilema’s personal friends or what, I don’t know but I think the Foundation is genuine,” he said. “And that Mr Greg Mills, I have read three of his books and they are extremely good books based on development of several African countries. He has been in the frontline advising President [Paul] Kagame of Rwanda and what Kagame is doing there is commendable.”

Meanwhile, Kavindele said some of the comments passed on Zambian-born philanthropist James Ndambo during his visit in which he donated various thing to residents of Choma and the police were unfair.
He noted that it would be difficult for those that wanted to help the country if there are similar sentiments directed towards those that wanted to partner with the government.

“This Dambo as far as I know is a genuine and prosperous businessman. Just that people have been unfair. Some of the comments are not good at all. During the last visit to Zambia, President Felix Tshisekedi [of DRC], Dambo came with President Tshisekedi. Dambo even introduced me to Tshisekedi’s two brothers and a cousin at Pamodzi [Hotel]. There was the Presidents’ table and the next was Ndambo’s table, and Congolese top people. He is quite a connected man. So you see here it is hard to assist where you can assist,” said Kavindele. “In other countries that would mean he is well in, to be in the company of the President’s relations. That is the impression I got myself. And you know most countries, when you are in those circles, it would appear that you are certainly accepted there. When I was talking to him that although he lived in South Africa, 75 per cent of his businesses were in the DRC. So to me it would appear he is a genuine businessman with intentions of assisting people here. I don’t think he has any political ambition. He is doing extremely well and very connected in the DRC. He had tried to do one or two businesses here on Kafue Road. He was running a dry port. Like most other things in Zambia, he was not appreciated. That is how he left Zambia to go and settle in South Africa. The art of philanthropy involves attacks both for the giver and receiver. Of course, you could say he went too much aboard but then that is his money. He is allowed to spend his money in the manner that he wanted.”

Zambian leadership increasingly facing
isolation from African leaders – M’membe

By Fanny Kalonda

SOCIALIST Party president Fred M’membe says the members of the Brenthurst Foundation that President Hakainde Hichilema honoured have done nothing for Zambia and that Zambians know truly who their heroes are.
Dr M’membe argued that the awards were meant to counter the recent publicity of an extremely progressive message given by Thabo Mbeki during the Kenneth Kaunda Memorial Lecture at Mulungushi International Conference Centre last month.

He said former South African president, Mbeki’s lecture highlighted the huge gap between the Pan Africanist leadership provided by Dr Kaunda and the current Zambian leadership, which is increasingly facing isolation from several African leaders.

“It is worth reminding anyone who may have forgotten that despite being present at State House in Lusaka, the President of Zambia stayed away from Mbeki’s lecture on Dr Kaunda, a man he claims to love, respect and adore very much,” Dr M’membe said. “I have read MMD leader Mr Nevers Mumba’s defence for the Oppenheimers and their agents in the Brenthurst Foundation, including the three who were honoured by the President of Zambia. I will not dignify Mr Mumba’s defence for the Oppenheimers – whom he proudly identifies himself with as his close allies – with a response. Suffice to say that it is impossible for imperialism to succeed anywhere in Africa without local collaborators, agents, puppets, muppets or lackeys. It has been like that since European colonialism started the conquest of Africa. The forces that are after our mineral wealth always recruit from among ourselves those who are available for hire to become its voices, to defend and promote its interests. We urge our people to always strive to unearth the real class interests any idea or social, economic, and political policy or practice serves. When someone speaks, the first question to ask is: whose class interests is this person serving, protecting or advancing? Is it the poor Zambians’ interests? Or is it the Oppenheimers’ imperial and profit interests? Or is it the interests of mining lobbies? If they are defending the interests of the Brenthurst Foundation, an Anglo American mining lobby that seeks a low tax regime in our homeland and elsewhere in Africa to maximise their profits and our exploitation, what is in it for them?”

Dr M’membe maintained that “the disgraceful honours that were undeservedly given to members of the Brenthurst Foundation – the organisation created by the Oppenheimers and led by Mr Greg Mills that supported the campaign of the President when in opposition – shall be withdrawn once we assume office”.

“We note that nearly everyone associated with the Brenthurst Foundation – including Mr Greg Mills, the Oppenheimers, former president of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe and other members of the advisory board of the Brenthurst Foundation, and indeed Mr Nevers Mumba himself – turned up at State House on the day of the investiture ceremony to celebrate the honouring of three of their own,” he said. “What were all these people doing at State House if the hastily arranged investiture ceremony had nothing do with the Brenthurst Foundation? How did they find themselves there? Who invited them to State House, and in what capacity? It is patently clear that the President of Zambia and his right-wing sponsors are trying to use these disgraceful awards to impose agents of the Brenthurst Foundation – led by Mr Obasanjo [Olusegun], Mr Koroma [Ernest Bai] and Mrs Johnson [Ellen Sirleaf] – on Zambia as our national and African heroes. No, those people have done nothing for Zambians, and this explains why even the person who was awarding them could not cite a single example of anything they have done for Zambia. Yes, they are heroes of the President and his sponsors in the Brenthurst Foundation, but they are not and will never be our people’s heroes. Zambians know who their real heroes are and Mr Obasanjo, Mr Koroma and Mrs Johnson are not among them.”

Dr M’membe said Mbeki showed that even in instances where Dr Kaunda reached out to outside powers such as China for support, he never surrendered Zambia’s sovereignty to such powers or Western institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank.

“Besides laundering the Brenthurst Foundation as an ally of Zambia and Africa, we know that the other motivation behind those awards was to counter the recent publicity of an extremely progressive message given by Thabo Mbeki during the Kenneth Kaunda Memorial Lecture at Mulungushi International Conference Centre last month. Mbeki’s lecture highlighted the huge gap between the Pan Africanist leadership provided by Kaunda and the current Zambian leadership, which is increasingly facing isolation from several African leaders who see it as a puppet of Western imperialist countries that is out to serve the interests of racist white capital and its Western backers,” he said. “…For instance, Kaunda never conflated socialist solidarity with capitalist predatory plundering relationships! There are worlds of differences between the way capitalists and imperialists relate to other countries and each other. China, for example, never ordered the Zambian government to institute austerity, remove subsidies on cooking oil, petrol, diesel, paraffin, newspapers, and books and so on in return for anything. China never demanded that Zambia unbundles Zesco, and the government sells it, and so on. China never demanded that the government sells Zamtel in return for a bailout. China took a very long-term view and recognised that the country would be around even 100 years from now, if all Zambians did not perish from their poverty, and related to Zambia on a strong and mutual foundation of south-to-south solidarity.”

Dr M’membe charged that the Brenthurst Foundation and their agents were not happy with Mbeki’s lecture whose message received considerable respect among most Zambians.

“In short, Mbeki effectively told Zambians that the real heroes of Africa are the Kaundas, Oliver Tambos, the Julius Nyereres and other great Pan Africanists who never pandered to outside forces, not the black African puppets, muppets, lackeys of the Brenthurst Foundation who are either already in power or are being sponsored into power elsewhere such as in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, or Tanzania. When you are President of Zambia, Ghana, or Tanzania, being a genuine Pan Africanist is not a choice. It is a matter of heritage because you are heir to Pan Africanist luminaries such as Kaunda, Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere. But the President of Zambia today is more comfortable in the company of the Oppenheimers and their agents in the Brenthurst Foundation whom he has honoured,” he noted.

“We know that the Brenthurst Foundation and their agents were not happy with the excellent Pan African message that Mbeki, who enjoys considerable respect among most Zambians, delivered in Lusaka and were keen to hoist their own African collaborators on us, as our heroes. We should take time to explain how those awards are linked to that lecture. The President went to launch a book of his private white friend, Mr Greg Mills of the Brenthurst Foundation, in South Africa, using taxpayers’ resources. In attendance at that meeting were some of the people the President is now honouring as ‘continental democrats’. The President then went to the European capital, Brussels, to address white people using taxpayers’ resources. Yet the same globe-trotting President could not attend a lecture in honour of Dr Kaunda delivered in his own capital city by the most prominent and highly respected Pan African statesman alive today. Mulungushi International Conference Centre is literally minutes away from State House, where he was earlier meeting, with much fanfare, white people led by Samantha Power, the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development!”

Dr M’membe said President Hichilema missing Mbeki’s KK lecture was not accidental because everything Mbeki said during the occasion indicts him.

“If the KK lecture was delivered by Mr Greg Mills or another white person, or if the event was held in London or Washington, we are quite certain that the President would have gone to attend it. But he chose to consciously snub Mbeki’s KK memorial lecture because everything Mbeki said during the occasion, including the point that it is a betrayal of national sovereignty to turn to the IMF for solutions to an independent African country’s economic problems, indicts this President. This is a man who seems to worship whites, who appears subservient to white people. Anyone who doubts this should next notice how he humbles himself, like a kid who has seen candies, in front of whites compared to his demeanour when he is meeting black people,” he said. “The snubbing of Mbeki’s lecture was not accidental. It was part of this offensive by the Brenthurst Foundation against anything and anyone who stands in the path of their mining business interests. It was a victory for the President’s white friends in South Africa and Europe, who control him and who may in fact have advised him to stay away from Mbeki’s lecture. Such white people and their agents in the Brenthurst Foundation hate the discourse of slavery, racism, colonialism, neo colonialism and imperialism that Mbeki is known for. They are more comfortable with the discourse of ‘investors’ because they are the ‘investors’!”

And Dr M’membe said many Zambians may be poor, but are proud and dignified people who hate imperialism and its puppets.

“Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe warned us a long time ago, as did another patriot late legendary musician Keith Mlevu, to jealously guard our independence. Mlevu, in addition to singing about imperialism and state capture in his timeless “Ubuntungwa” song, also warned us about the dangers of borrowing in a song entitled “Inkongole tashawama”. Yet today, our leaders are going to the IMF with begging bowls and are foolishly ceding our sovereignty to the same forces that looted our mineral wealth for decades,” he said.
Dr M’membe said many white people and Europeans hate Mbeki because they see him as an intelligent and articulate African.

“We, the heirs to Kaunda, Mlevu and Kapwepwe, must reject not just those scandalous awards to the heroes of the Brenthurst Foundation but also the new form of colonisation by stealth and the mortgaging of our homeland to the puppets’ imperial masters. We consider it a betrayal of the vision of our founding fathers and mothers to subcontract the economic development of our homeland to mining lobby groups, Western financial institutions and the same forces who pillaged our mineral resources and from which our independence was won. Many white people and Europeans hate Mbeki because they see him as an intelligent, articulate African in their language against them – the worst kind of African to them! They prefer dealing with puppets, muppets, lackeys who have no independent mind of their own. They can tell the puppets, muppets, lackeys to confer awards on their co-puppets, muppets, lackeys if only to show that they oversee key decision-making in Zambia today and to counter the progressive message of Mbeki and supplant it with their own right-wing, imperialist narratives, to hoist their own ‘African heroes’ – represented by the three Brenthurst board members who were given the disgraceful honours – separate from everything Mbeki represents,” said M’membe. “In retrospect, we think that it was a good thing that the President snubbed Mbeki because this makes it easier to unpack continuously the differences between this President and all Pan Africanist leaders. If he had been present at Mulungushi, his meeting, shaking hands and photo sessions with Mbeki would have been the most reported things from the lecture, burying the important matter of the wide distance between them. Many Zambians may be poor, but they are a proud and dignified people who hate imperialism and its puppets, muppets, lackeys and tremble with indignation, anger at the subordination of their interests to the white commercial interests of mining lobbies and multinational corporations.”

We’re in India to meet captains of the industry – Nalumango

By Oliver Chisenga in Delhi

WE are here to meet the captains of the industry and see that which we should take home, declared Vice-President Mutale Nalumango upon arrival in the Indian capital Delhi on Monday.

Vice-President Nalumango is accompanied by Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Elias Mubanga, her two permanent secretaries Lillian Kapusana and Mervis Nkomeshya, and a number of other government officials.

She said her trip to Delhi fits in very well with the new dawn government’s agenda of marketing Zambia as declared by the chief marketing officer President Hakainde Hichilema.

She is in India to attend the 17th CII-EXIM BANK Conclave on India-Africa growth partnership which has attracted more than 33 countries from Africa.

The event also includes 300 representatives from government and business and 19 ministerial delegations from 10 African countries.

“The significance is that our coming here fits in very well with the new dawn agenda. You know that my President, Hakainde Hichilema is the chief marketing officer and I am his deputy so I come on the same mission to fulfil the vision,” she said. “You know that as a country we have gone into economic diplomacy. It doesn’t matter where we go we should fit in this fact. So, we are here to meet the captains of the industry and see that which we should take home. I am sure you realise as Zambians that India is a very important partner and now it’s our time to assure them of who we are, that we are transforming, creating the environment that is conducive for any business.”

She further said she was in the Asian nation to attract nationals there that they could travel to Zambia and invest.

“When they are investing, let nobody use wrong words, when they are investing it means growing our economy; it means finding jobs for our people. That means a lot of good things in the value chain,” Vice-President Nalumango said “We are saying value addition and these are things that Indians have done. And you know, they are so many and we are so small, so if we attract them I see Zambia getting better.”

Vice President Nalumango said Zambia needs India in so many fields of economic engagement.

She noted that India has progressed in so many ways.

“You came earlier than me and I am sure you know that India has progressed in so many ways. We want them in agriculture, not just farming but value addition. Again, processing, manufacturing…that’s is what we want, whether you go into pharmaceutical, we need them home,” said Vice-President Nalumango. “It’s time we started having factories of that nature so that we can manufacture the drugs that we need. Remember, we actually want to interest them because coming to Zambia is actually coming to Africa. I think this is a very important meeting for us.”

According to her marathon programme, Vice-President Nalumango, among other activities, will have a bilateral meeting with the Vice-President of India, Shri M Venkaiah.

She will also deliver a key note address at the inauguration session of the 17th CII-EXIM BANK Conclave on India-Africa growth partnership at Taj Palace.

On July 20, Vice-President Nalumango will depart for Ahmedabad where she will visit Amul Dairy Plant in Gujarat State.

At Amul Dairy Plant, Vice-President Nalumango will have a meeting with the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited.

At Amul Diary which is the largest cooperative in Asia, Vice-President Nalumango will tour the plant to familiarise with the operations.

Amul is an Indian Dairy State government cooperative society.

It is the largest food product marketing organisation with an annual turnover of $5.3 billion, making it the largest cooperative in Asia as of 2021.

The cooperative is owned by 360,000 small and medium scale farmers who have over 31 high-tech plants producing more than 80 dairy products.

She will later visit Torrent Pharmaceuticals in Mehsana, the largest pharmaceutical plant in India.

After the tour of the pharmaceutical plant, she will have a briefing with Torrent management.

Vice-President Nalumango will have a meeting with Pathik Patwari, the president of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries and potential investors to Zambia.

On July 20, the Zambian ministers in the delegation will participate in the country session and plenary discussion on trade and investment opportunities in Zambia to attract Indian investment.

The 17th CII-EXIM BANK Conclave on India-Africa growth partnership will be held from July 19 to 20.

“Just Ended Summit Was A Flop” – Kalaba

“JUST ENDED SUMMIT WAS A FLOP,” KALABA

Morning Zambia!
Yesterday I made an earnest appeal to government to step back and do some introspection into the presidential turnout at the just ended AU Summit. As anticipated, besides my reminder for a time out to trigger happy attackers, I received a barrage of messages questioning my motive from people who clearly need to understand how diplomacy works. I want to take some time to share my experience to those who will care to read and listen on how these summits are managed.

While the AU has a standing list of the expected dignitaries including heads of state, it is the duty of the host country to appoint an envoy who is sent to the different countries to seek their participation. This is a gesture of goodwill to the would be participant. The task the special envoy has is to make a representation on behalf of the hosting country and seeking the participation of other heads of state.

In this regard, President Hakainde should have assigned his senior diplomat in Hon. Kakubo to visit all the countries whose presidents should have attended the Lusaka summit to lobby their Presidents to attend the summit. It is at this stage where pertinent issues are equally brought to the would be participants to seek their support ahead of the meeting.

International Diplomacy is therefore a factor of personal engagement and relationship building. It is this aspect that makes a difference between successful events and those that flop like the just ended Lusaka summit. By contrast this country has held successful international events and the New Dawn government should have simply engaged those with the relevant expertise and institutional memory to help with the preparation for the AU Summit.

While we failed to reach out to other countries within the region to lobby for their heads of state to attend the AU Summit in Lusaka, the President had the time and energy to invite himself on a Europe tour which resulted in his request to visit France being rejected owing to elections that where taking place in that country. This is yet another example of failure to understand diplomacy. The New Dawns government’s random actions of fraternizing the West, have resulted in Zambia being alienated from the rest of Africa.

It is this aspect that requires serious introspection. President Hakainde has the inescapable duty of building the nation and ensuring the country continues to enjoy good relations with her neighbors and no amount of attack on the opposition will change that.

This country was build on the values and principles of Pan Africanism, any responsible leader would make frantic efforts to preserve that than seek to have the country recolonized. What will it benefit us to win accolades from the West but lose our place on the Pan African table? It is my humble call to the President to take stock of his action and realize that Zambia is in Africa.

Please like and share the post so that we give more people to echo their sentiments and or views.

STOP DISRESPECTING THE FORMER HEAD OF STATE!

0

STOP DISRESPECTING THE FORMER HEAD OF STATE!

By Jocek Kunda

There is no justification for sounding sarcastic and disrespectful towards those who deserve double honor. ( Romans 12:10)

Movement for Promoting National Values and Principles was constituted in order to preserve, appreciate, honor and highly esteem national values and principles. Among the highly valued assets include our freedom fighters, the elderly in general and our leaders who render services to the Republic of Zambia. One way we can preserve history is by listening to our elderly men and women who were there before, during and after independence.

Whether we like it or not President/Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu will remain in the history books of this Country as the sixth Head of State. A visit at Cabinet Office on the third floor under the OVP wing would remind anyone about the Heads of State who previously served the Republic of Zambia. The portraits of these men are left hanging on the wall visible to be seen by anyone.

Recently the former Head of State His Excellency Dr. Edgar C. Lungu was captured watering down the New Dawn Administration and lamenting about the alleged persecutions he is undergoing with his closest family. President ECL challenged the New Dawn Administration to remove his Presidential Immunity and take him before Court.

DO NOT CHOOSE MISUNDERSTANDING PRESIDENT/DR. ECL.

Do not choose to misunderstand whatever others say neither should we put meaning in someone’s sentiments. We are free moral agents and have freedom of expression. President Lungu is a mere human being with feelings. He has emotions as well.

During his tenure of office as the Republican President, Dr. Chagwa Lungu was called all sorts of names ranging from a Chakolwa, a Thief, a Criminal and Mr. Jameson. Mr. Chama Fumba commonly known as Pilato went to an extent of composing a song comparing him to a drunken person.

The UPND while in opposition never recognized the former Head of State as the Republican President. His Excellency the now Republican President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema never addressed ECL as His Excellency. He always called him Mr. Lungu. Similarly everyone in the UPND ranks refused recognizing the former Head of State as the Republican President.

Following the emotional remarks made by President ECL at his Ibex residence, hon Cornelius Mweetwa, hon Chushi Kasanda, Mr. Hachombwa ( An ordinary UPND member), Bishop/Commissioner John Maambo, Pastor/President for MMD Amb. Nevers Mumba and several others are on record to have rubbished the former Presidents sentiment.

DO NOT TAKE SERIOUSLY THE UTTERANCES OF A GRIEVING PERSON. ( UULELILA TABAMUCEBA KUKANWA).

When a person is mourning, often they end up uttering uncoordinated statements. Others even shift the blame on a dead person. Some even request to be buried together with their departed colleague. Others blame themselves while some shift a blame on others.

Similarly it is just logical, normal and expected for the former Head of State ranting that way! We call such sentiments ‘Lamentations’. ( Icimbo camalilo). In fact President Lungu is coming out that way for the first time. While he issued a contradictory statement during President Rupiah Banda’s funeral, he has always tried to contain himself.

Naturally and ordinarily, President Edgar Lungu is affected by the happenings in the Country since he lost power following the August 12, 2021 general elections. While handing over power to President Hichilema at Heroes Stadium, President ECL was reduced to a laughing stock by being booed. He suffered total humiliation, denunciation and denouncing by the cheering crowds.

The supporting staff who accompanied him at the Stadium were stopped from being with him with the exception of his daughter hon Tasila Lungu Mwansa. He left the Stadium as an ordinary person and was reduced to a mere whisper. Recently, the Law Enforcement Agencies have pounced on his Son Madalitso, his Aide – Camp, his personal barber man, his closest colleagues, his daughter and now his own wife is facing a corrupt allegation.

It comes as an expected scenario hearing him cry foul about the happenings surrounding his family. We are not in a military cantonment neither are we in a dictatorial type of government. Democracy entail that we allow citizens to speak their minds. No one can feel the emotional pain and anguish he has been going through except himself. ( Icikalipa cumfwa umwine).

Neither is this article meant to disagree with the ongoing investigations taking place not only on the former President’s closest family members and his colleagues. If at all the Law Enforcement Agencies feel that President Lungu’s family members need to be probed, let the due process of the Law take its course.

However, MPNVP does not agree with the ongoing perceptions and notions in the Country of calling people all sorts of names before honorable Courts find them guilty. Only the honorable Courts have the jurisdiction of rendering judgement on the accused. We also need to learn to respect our former leaders and our present leaders.

MAY PRESIDENT HH TAKE THE LEAD IN RECOGNIZING HIS PREDECESSOR!

It was heartwarming and thrilling experiencing the highest Presidential recognitions conferred upon the former Heads of State from three (3) Countries at State House! If President Hakainde Hichilema could go an extra mile honoring and conferring upon the three foreign heads of states in our Country, he can do better than that by appreciating our own!

Honestly, what benefit does our Country earn by recognizing foreign heroes from outside Zambia? What economic value does Zambia attain? Who do we want to please? What impression are we painting to the entire world by disregarding our own former head of state while paying obeisance to foreign political icons?

MPNVP is calling upon the Republican President his Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema to make amends in his approach by learning the need of recognizing political veterans from his own Country! It is high time we started hearing connotations from the Presidents intonations, speeches, utterances and sentiments indicating recognitions and appreciations about our own leaders.

It will be very easy for the rest of the citizens according respect to our former leaders once they begin hearing from President Hichilema. There are so many good things that the former Head of State accomplished in the Country worthy of commendations.

MPNVP – WE HIGHLY VALUE OUR LEADERS!

Only 5 Presidents At AU Meeting, Zambia Has Been Snubbed, Given Lubinda Tells The Press

0

Given Lubinda told a press conference this morning.

Below is his press statement:

PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY HON. GIVEN LUBINDA, PATRIOTIC FRONT ACTING PRESIDENT

Monday, 18th July 2022

MEMBERS OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE,
MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA,

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

WE HAVE CALLED THIS PRESS CONFERENCE TO REFLECT ON VARIOUS ISSUES AFFECTING OUR COUNTRY.
POOR ATTENDANCE OF THE AFRICAN UNION MEETINGS

THE AFRICAN UNION 41ST ORDINARY SESSION OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL AND THE 4TH MID-YEAR COORDINATION MEETING, 14TH-17TH JULY

ZAMBIA WAS AWARDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO HOST THE AFRICAN UNION JULY SUMMIT IN 2017.

AT THE TIME, THE AFRICAN UNION HELD TWO MAJOR SUMMITS; THE JANUARY AND THE JULY SUMMITS.

IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT ZAMBIA IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO MOBILISE RESOURCES TO PREPARE TO HOST THE 55 HEADS OF STATE SCHEDULED TO ATTEND THE 2022 SUMMIT.

PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU SOUGHT THE HELP OF CHINA. THIS CULMINATED IN CHINA-AID SUPPORTING THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ULTRA-MODERN CONFERENCE FACILTY AT THE COST OF $65M.

HOWEVER, FOLLOWING THE KAGAME LED AU INSTITUTIONAL REFORMS, THE JULY SUMMIT WAS CONVERTED INTO A MID-YEAR COORDINATION MEETING IN 2019.

THIS NOW HAS 13 HEADS OF STATE COMPRISING FIVE (5) HEADS OF STATE OF THE BUREAU AND EIGHT (😎 FROM REGIONAL ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES (RECs). AS A MATTER OF FACT ZAMBIA HAD ALREADY REQUESTED THE AU TO CONSIDER ZAMBIA HOSTING A FULL SUMMIT DUE TO THE COLLOSAL INVESTMENT IN THE PREPARATIONS.

AS SEEN FROM YESTERDAY THIS MEETING WAS POORLY ATTENDED WITH ONLY FIVE HEADS OF STATE OUT OF THE EXPECTED 13.

ONE WONDERS WHETHER THE QUORUM WAS MET AT THIS MEETING. I ALSO WONDER WHETHER THE DECISIONS THAT WERE MADE AT THE MEETING WILL BE BINDING ON THE OTHER HEADS OF STATE WHO DECIDED NOT TO ATTEND.

AU AND ITS SUMMITS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TREATED WITH HIGH REGARD BY AFRICAN NATIONS. ONE WONDERS WHY ONLY FIVE HEADS OF STATE ATTENDED. OVER THIS WE CAN SIMPLY SPECULATE.

WE AS A COUNTRY MUST FEEL THAT WE WERE SNUBBED BY THE EIGHT HEADS OF STATE WHO DID NOT ATTEND.

WE WONDER WHETHER THEIR DECISIONS TO STAY AWAY FROM ZAMBIA IS NOT BECAUSE ZAMBIA IS BEING VIEWED AS A COUNTRY PROMOTING INTERESTS THAT MAY BE INIMICAL TO OAN-AFRICANISM AND AGAINST THE INTEREST OF THE REGION.

CONCERNS

WE HAVE STRONGLY EXPRESSED CONCERNS ON THE FOREIGN, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL POLICIES OF PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA AND THE NEW DAWN GOVERNMENT.

HIS POLICIES ARE PRO-WEST, PRO-RICH, PRO-INVESTOR AND AGAINST PAN AFRICAN IDEALS AND AGAINST PRO-POOR.

USAFRICOM

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE USAFRICOM OFFICE OF SECURITY COOPERATION, AGAINST THE STATED POSITION OF SADC AND THE AFRICAN UNION.

THE USA GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED THAT AFRICOM WILL OPEN THIS OFFICE IN AUGUST/SEPTEMBER, 2022.

WE WROTE A LETTER OF CONCERN TO PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA TO PUBLISH THE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) REGULATING AND GOVERNING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THIS OFFICE. TODATE, WE HAVE HAD NO RESPONSE.

IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT WE HAVE WRITTEN TO THE AFRICAN UNION CHAIRPERSON, HIS EXCELLENCY MACKY SALL, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SENEGAL, TO PERSUADE HIM TO REMIND PRESIDENT HICHILEMA ON THIS NEGATIVE ACTION AGAINST AFRICA.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AFRICOM OFFICES IN ZAMBIA IS A SECURITY RISK TO ZAMBIA, SADC AND THE REGION.

ACTION AGAINST MOBILE-MONEY AGENT

THE DEMOLITION AND REMOVAL OF BOOTHS BELONGING TO MOBILE MONEY AGENTS WITHOUT ADEQUATE NOTICE AND AWRENESS IS REGRETTABLE.

ZAMBIA HAS DONE VERY WELL IN BRINGING FINANCIAL SERVICES TO THE UNDER-BANKED AND THOSE LIVING OUTSIDE BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES.

SINCE 2015, ZAMBIA HAS CLIMBED THE LADDER OF FINANCIAL INCLUSION AND HAS RISEN FROM 30% TO ALMOST 70%.

THE OVER 150,000 MOBILE MONEY AGENTS HAVE BEEN AT THE CENTRE OF THIS REMARKABKE PROGRESS.

TO THEREFORE DISRUPT AND DESTROY THE SELF-CREATED EMPLOYMENT BECAUSE ZAMBIA WAS HOSTING AFRICAN UNION MEETINGS WAS UNFORTUNATE AND REGRETTABLE.

WHILE WE SUPPORT THE INITIATIVE TO MAKE LUSAKA CLEAN AND ENSURE THAT TRADERS CONDUCT BUSINESS AT DESIGNATED SPACES, THIS CANNOT BE DONE AT THE EXPENSE OF LIVELIHOODS.
BY THE WAY THE BOOTHS DID NOT COME BY ACCIDENT, THEY CAME AS A RESULT OF THE FINANCIAL INCLUSION STRATEGY OF 2017.

THE CORRUPTION FIGHT
IT IS NOW ESTABLSHED THAT THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION IS A FUSS AND HAS DESCENDED INTO A FIGHT TO DESTROY THE PATRIOTIC FRONT AND ITS LEADERS.

OUR WARNING IS TO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, TO KNOW THAT ZAMBIANS ARE WATCHING HOW STATE INSTITUTIONS ARE BEING ABUSED TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVE.

WHILE THEY PAY A BLIND EYE TO THE CURRENT MASSIVE ACTS OF CORRUPTION BEING DONE IN THE NEW DAWN GOVERNMENT, ZAMBIANS ARE RECORDING THE DETAILS.

THE RECENT DECLARATIONS OF ASSETS BY CABINET MINISTERS DEMONSTRATES ILLUSTRATES THE LACK OF SERIUSONESS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION BY THIS GOVERNMENT. FIRSTLY THE DECLARATIONS ARE BELATED BY 10 MONTHS BECAUSE THE LAW DICTATES THAT WITHIN THE MONTH OF BEING APPOINTED, A PERSON MUST MAKE A DECLARARTION. SECONDLY THE INDECENT AMOUUNTS AND ASSESTS THAT HAVE BEEN DECLARED MAKE A MOCKERY OF THE PERSUIT OF 15 FLATS AGAINST THE FORMER FIRST LADY, ARE DESIGNED TO CAUSE PUBLIC EMBARRASMENT AND RIDICULE TO THE FORMER FIRST FAMILY.

WE HAVE SEEN, PERSONS THAT HAVE BEEN CIVIL SERVANTS ALL THEIR LIVES DECLARE $18MILLION CASH IN THE BANK.

SO IN THIS CASE, YOU MEAN THE FIRST LADY CAN’T BUILD FIFTEEEN FLATS?

THE DECLARATION BY MINISTERS NEED VERIFICATION WITH VARIOUSNINSTUTIONS TO ENSURE THAT THE ASSETS WERE GENUINELY EARNED AND OBTAINED, AND APPROPRIATE TAXES WERE PAID ON THE ASSETS.

THE DECLARATIONS SHOULD NOT BE USED AS INSULATION AGAINST FUTURE CASES OF CORRUPTION.

Zambians Must Not Become Big Headed-none Of The Seven Presidents Is The Best But They All Complimented Each Other- Charles Chanda

0

ZAMBIANS MUST NOT BECOME BIG HEADED-NONE OF THE SEVEN PRESIDENTS IS THE BEST BUT THEY ALL COMPLIMENTED EACH OTHER– Charles Chanda

President Kaunda (MHSRIP) did his best to help build our economy and education institutions. He gave us real free education from primary to university. His weakness was to concentrate so much on the frontline states and the liberation of Southern African countries. He neglected the mines and the parastal companies.

President Chiluba (MHSRIP)
Introduced multi-party politics and sold Council houses cheap. Weakness was that he introduced cadrerism and corruption. He sold our economy to the highest bidder under the evil animal called privatisation.

President Mwanawasa (MHSRIP) He fought corruption introduced by his predecessor and revamped the economy. Kwacha became so strong. Weakness was his loose hands on mining investors. The eleventh truck on one privatised mine was his own which was not right. The conversion of primary schools into secondary schools was not the best way of solving the lack of space for secondary school learners.

President Rupiah Banda (MHSRIP) We will leave him out

President Sata (MHSRIP)
Introduced massive infrastructure development and by allowing State House to administer this opened up the doors of rampant corruption whose doors were closed by President Mwanawasa. His greatest weakness was borrowing. The country today is in huge debts because of that administration.

President Lungu.
He tried his best to tackle the massive infrastructural agenda left by his predecessor but was powerless to close the doors of corruption. He was mindful of the poor. He cared for our traditional rulers. Unfortunately he was a very good friend of cadres and this led to his exit as these cadres became a law to themselves. He surrounded himself with people who had long fingers and this led to national compromise. His link with Chinese companies that were given government contracts was a source of concern.

President HH.
It’s too early to rate him but so far the sings are that he is working had to create employment for citizens. He seems to hate corruption which is very encouraging but he must not just look at past corruption but present one. His weakness is that he has supporters that take him as a god who cannot make a mistake. His links with the minority white supremacy is worrisome. His lack of care for the poor of the poorest is vividly noted. The cost of living in the past ten months has surpassed all the time we have lived since independence. Otherwise we are hoping to get the best out of his presidency.

These are my views and as a human being l may not be 100% but however as a political player this is what l can emulate and cast out given chance to govern.

ASSET DECLARATION BY MINISTERS SHOCK PF

ASSET DECLARATION BY MINISTERS SHOCK PF

Lusaka ~ Monday, 18 July 2022

By Brightwell Chabusha

PF Acting President Given Lubinda has wondered why ACC is pursuing former first lady Esther Lungu over 15 flats when ‘a former civil servant’ can declare than they have a farm worth K60 million.

Speaking when he addressed the media at the Party secretariat today, Mr Lubinda frowned at the declaration of assets that current ministers recently made.

He is shocked that, instead of 30 days as “prescribed under the law,” the new dawn ministers took 10 months to declare their assets.

“Firstly, it must be made clear that these declarations are belated by 10 months. Because the law is very clear. It dictates that within the month of being appointed, a person must make declarations. Within 30 days, it doesn’t say after one year. it says within 30 days. Why did it take them 10 months?” he asked.

“Secondly, the indecent amounts of money and assets that are being declared are shocking. These make a mockery of the pursuit of the few assets that are held by PF members. If some people in this country, having served as civil servants can have this stinking wealth, how can anybody imagine that the former first lady should be pursued over owning 15 flats?”

Mr Lubinda stressed the need for fairness in how law enforcement agencies operate.

“If some people can say I have a farm worth K60 million, you start to wonder is there gold mine on that farm? Then you pursue a person, former first lady for owning 15 flats. If a former civil servant has a farm worth K60 million, how can a former first lady, having been a first lady for seven years, you go and ask how did you acquire 15 flats?” he asked.

“Before you go and inquire on how a former civil servant has K320 million in his account. Chisakomele galu kuluma mbuzi…..what is good for the opposition must be good for a ruling party. So they should tell us, where did all this money come from?”

He however called on law enforcement agencies to verify the assets.

Mr Lubinda said it’s possible that what he termed as indecent, insane assets are actually just a preparation to stealing tax payer’s money.

He insinuated that “they prepare now to say we have K60 million worth farm so that in five years’ time when they have actually accumulated then they say but you see I told you in 2022.”

British father who walked out on his partner and children for a Ukrainian refugee reveals he’s broke after losing work over their affair

The British dad who left his partner for a Ukrainian refugee they took into their home has cried out that he is now broke.

Security guard Tony Garnett, 29, and his partner Lorna Garnett, the mother of their two daughters, took in 22-year-old Sofiia Karkadym following the invasion of Ukraine by the Russians.

Tony and Lorna had been together for 10 years before they sponsored Soffia to escape war-torn Ukraine.

But, Tony immediately fell in love with Sofiia in their Bradford home, sparking a furious row that split their family.

Just 10 days after Sofiia moved into the family home, Tony left his partner and ran off with the Ukrainian refugee.

Now, he says he is broke because he has lost jobs over his affair with Sofiia.

He told the Daily Star: “I’ve been trying to get by and survive with Sofiia with nowt.

“I want to show people that I’m not a scrounger for government benefits, I know what is right.

“I used to have a very successful business. I’ve dedicated myself to it, some weeks I put over 80 hours a week into it.”

Tony said that he ran a security firm that had contracts he lost due to his relationship attracting so much attention.

He added: “Now and again I’m sending door staff to pubs and clubs but I’ve gone from earning nearly 2k a week to earning jack s***.”

This comes four days after it was revealed that Tony had released a rap criticising “an ex”.

The rap video was posted less than 24 hours after he was hit with a court order preventing him from contacting Lorna after she alleged he had sent her abusive texts.

Hours after the court hearing on Wednesday, July 13, Tony put out a YouTube song called “Ukraine to UK Rain” in which he accuses an “ex” of being “two-faced” and playing with his emotion like a video console”.

He raps: “I’m now with a blonde – but yes, my ex was a brunette.”

The song describes Ukraine as “a country torn apart with war crimes and bad pain”.

It also includes the lines: “Should I have stayed there just to be with my kids? No thank you, not today. You see my mental state forbids.”

He told MailOnline after the rap was released: “It’s important for me to explain my side of things. I didn’t name her, I just said ‘my ex’ in the lyrics. I know that won’t get me into trouble because a solicitor told me. It could be any ex I’m referring to. I told the judge that I’d be writing music about what had happened to me.”

President Putin admits Western sanctions are causing Russia ‘colossal’ problems

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has admitted his nation is facing ‘colossal’ problems due to the unprecedented Western sanctions over Ukraine.

The Kremlin chief said the West’s sanctions had cut Russia off from major technology products and conceded the nation could not develop in complete isolation, but added it would be impossible to fully sever Moscow’s connection to the rest of the world.

‘This is a huge challenge for our country,’ the president said today during a video conference with other Russian officials.

‘Realising the colossal amount of difficulties we are facing, we will look for new solutions in an energetic and competent manner.

‘Clearly, we cannot develop in isolation from the rest of the world, but we won’t. In today’s world, you can’t just, you know, circle everything with a compass and put up a huge fence, it’s just not possible.’

Many top tech companies including Apple, Microsoft and Intel suspended their operations in Russia or left the country altogether after Putin sent troops to Ukraine on February 24, leaving Russia with few domestic alternatives.

Putin also said that many fast-growing Russian firms in the sector, such as online retailer Ozon or internet company Yandex, had their growth stunted as their access to Western financing had been severed.

But the warmongering Russian leader said the nation would focus on developing ‘sovereign ‘technology and innovation from domestic companies, calling on the nation’s finance ministry and banks to make plans for major cash injections.

‘I very much look forward to detailed proposals from both the finance ministry and the Bank of Russia,’ Putin declared.

His admission that Western sanctions are crippling Russia’s tech industry came as EU foreign ministers met in Brussels to discuss fresh proposals of yet more sanctions.

Ministers from EU nations are reviewing a potential ban on gold exports, among other things, to further cripple the Russian economy.

The European bloc’s foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said that at the moment ‘the most important thing is a ban on Russian gold’, which is Moscow’s second-largest export industry after energy.

Bride is shot dead at her wedding during celebratory gunfire when stray bullet from guest hits her in the head

A bride has sadly been shot dead at her own wedding ceremony after a stray bullet from celebratory gunfire hit her in the head.

Mahvash Leghaei, 24, got married at Firuzabad in Iran when a guest, who is believed to be a cousin of the groom, fired his unlicensed high-powered hunting rifle. The bullet reportedly went straight through her skull and also injured two male guests at the event.

Police spokesman Colonel Mehdi Jokar said: ‘We had an emergency call of a shooting at a wedding hall in Firuzabad city and officers were dispatched immediately.

‘The officers discovered that somebody had fired shots with a hunting rifle as part of the local nomad tradition, but unfortunately because of the crowds and the person’s poor control of the weapon, he managed to shoot three people, two men and the bride.

‘The shooter then fled the area but police located the man still carrying the unlicensed hunting rifle that had been fired at the wedding.’

According to initial reports two bullets were fired, the first without incident, but the second hitting the bride in the head, passing through her brain and hitting the two other guests.

The police spokesman said the bride was placed in a coma and later died but the two others who had been shot were not seriously injured.

The shooter was identified as a 36-year-old who was not named but was reportedly a cousin of the groom.

The police spokesman added: ‘Naturally any disturbance of public order like this crosses the red line with the police need to act, and people need to know that to create a safe community shooting is banned at weddings.

‘We will take tough action against anybody found to be breaking this rule.’

The victim’s family said her organs were donated and they have helped three people.

The custom of firing a gun at weddings is illegal but still common in the Middle East.

Yes, Zambians Are Now Comparing Mr. Lungu’s Leadership To That Of President HH- Percy Chanda

PRESS STATEMENT

18 TH JULY 2022

YES, ZAMBIANS ARE NOW COMPARING MR. LUNGU’S
LEADERSHIP TO THAT OF PRESIDENT HH

We totally agree with Mr. Lungu that Zambians are now able to compare between his leadership and that of President HH. But certainly we don’t agree with him that he handed over power voluntarily. The correct position is that he was totally rejected by the Zambian people. We are also aware that there was going to be bloodshed after elections. We therefore urge Mr. Lungu to quickly come out of denial and make peace first with himself. Reacting in a confrontational and antagonistic manner will not help him in anyway. He should sober up and reflect on his past conduct towards Zambians. Zambia is no longer moving in reverse but forward.

Under Mr. Lungu some media houses were closed, stormed and with some journalists assaulted. But under the HH administration there is total media freedom. No harassment of journalists.

Under Mr. Lungu carders were more powerful than the Police; carders were beating, maiming and killing Zambians with impunity. Under the HH administration carders have been modeled into law abiding and responsible citizens. The Police are now operating professionally.

Mr. Lungu, being a very greedy leader bought a very expensive jet for himself at the expense of the suffering Zambians. The selfless HH has abandoned that expensive jet and instead is using commercial flights.

Under Mr. Lungu, innocent Zambians were gassed and markets burnt for political reasons. But now under HH, people’s human rights are respected and upheld.

Mr. Lungu led the way in stealing public resources through Ubomba Mwibala. HH is urging Zambians not to eat from Mwibala; instead Zambians should protect and grow public resources.

Under Mr. Lungu there was careless borrowing and stealing of money through ghost projects like the FTJ, Ntumpa and Mongu universities and many others. Under HH there is prudent use of available resources and accountability by allowing Parliament to ratify any future borrowing.

Under Mr. Lungu teachers and medical personnel were employed as volunteers/casuals. Under HH more than 30 000 teachers have been employed on pensionable conditions.

With these few comparisons it’s very clear that Mr. Lungu was a very greedy and ruthless dictator who tormented and tortured Zambians. Mr. Lungu is taking his luck too far, he should just shut up.
