WHY REDUCED INFLATION AND GAINING KWACHA ARE NOT IMPACTING THE COST OF LIVING POSITIVELY

EFF PRESS STATEMENT…..

WHY REDUCED INFLATION AND GAINING KWACHA ARE NOT IMPACTING THE COST OF LIVING POSITIVELY

It’s very important to understand fundamentals that cause economic trends. This gives a correct response on how to react to either a positive or negative economic trend. Fundamental and technical analysis are two common words used for those that trade on active stock market. The two theories affects trader’s decisions to buy or sell stocks.

In Zambia, the strength of the Kwacha against the US dollar is something that brings a lot of excitement to international traders and indeed is used as an economic performance indicator by a common man on the street.

However, without understanding why we have a gain or a loss, could lead to serious poor decisions by those who actually involve in international trade, our local traders.

What is interesting in our economy right now, we have a reducing inflation and a stable and gained exchange rate that is actually having less impact on the price of consumers goods. The cost of living is still going up and unbearable.

In actuality, what is expected is the opposite to happen. A reducing inflation and a stabilizing and gaining currency should translate in cheaper goods but it is not our case.

The reason is very simple, our gain in the Kwacha against the US dollar is because of the weakening of US dollar. If you check the US dollar against the Chinese Yen and Rubles from Russia, you would appreciate our explanation.

The UK pound, Euro and Dollar are certainly under pressure as the result of Ukraine-Russia war. Russia is demanding that oil to be bought from their currency, Rubles and not the US dollar. China, India and other countries are buying fuel cheaply from Russia and their currencies are doing fine.

What is happening now, the global economy is deeply being divided into two spheres. The BRICS( Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) against the West. Therefore, going forward, it would be very important to make comparisons of exchange against the emerging currency to determine the performance of the US dollar, especially against the Rubles. For Yen, it’s usually manipulated against the dollar. They always peg it down against the US dollar for cheaper export purposes. Therefore, the Chinese Yen is not good yield stick for purposes comparison against US dollar.

Our Kwacha has been relatively stable the past month and slightly the previous. Hence, any turbulence in major currency, translate in significant changes in Kwacha as witnessed.

Because of our Kwacha gaining on those grounds, the cost of living will still remain high because the prices will still be going up unless we start producing and increase our exports.

What the government should actually be concerned with are the reserves we hold in US dollars which is about $ 2.8 billion. This actually means, losing value stored in US dollars . They really need to pay attention to what is happening in the global market and possess an understanding thereof to find correct response to this new development. Gold reserves will prove better and has always been better from time in memorial.

Hence, with this positive gain that we have, not knowing how long it would last because the fundamentals are not as a result of our own efforts, government should take advantage by encouraging our people to import manufacturing machines. This can be done through reducing tax duty on those items. Thus, this will create possibilities of creating manufacturing jobs in the near future . We hope the trend continues in our favor as a country.

Wherever we want to go, our feet shall take us there.

PF MPS MUST SHUT UP OR WE WILL ARREST THEM

WE’VE DOSSIERS AGAINST PF MPS

…they shouldn’t talk loudest –

By Kombe Mataka

UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says PF members of parliament should not talk the loudest because there are dossiers against them.
Mweetwa, who is also Southern Province minister, told The Mast that it was clear the PF were taking their freedom of speech to hold briefings to disparage and speak falsehoods against the
government.

“Those characters who had a briefing on Friday, the PF MPs, I think those guys are abusing the freedom that they are enjoying to begin to
disparage and speak falsehoods against the new dawn government. How do they expect that the FIC (Financial Intelligence Centre Report) to begin to name people who were not presiding over public affairs? They (PF) are the ones who were presiding over public affairs. And I would like to
caution some of those people. They are the ones who have taken us to where we are. The Ministry of Local Government is suffering, looking for money to pay local contractors that got contracts and did nothing and the majority of them being former ministers. Some of them are still MPS in parliament,” Mweetwa said. “We are very expectant that those that have been named in the [FIC] report will be prosecuted so that people know the extent to which resources were abused by the PF government who say they don’t want us to name them when we are discussing the governance of this country. Let them not talk loudest. I have been hoeing some dossiers against them silently but if I want to begin this political hullabaloo now, they should know that I am armed to the teeth for them. So let them not take for granted the fact that they are able to
speak without harassment in the manner that they never used to allow others to do.”
At a briefing held by PF members of parliament at Parliament on Friday, PF chief whip Stephen Kampyongo alleged that the FIC was targeting only those that served in PF.

Lukashya PF member of parliament George Chisanga, who is alse the party legal affairs chairperson, demanded that the fight against corruption be objective and done in adherence to the rule of law.

Chisanga regretted that the fight against corruption currently has been reduced to a chase against the PF which is undermining it.
The MPs alleged that a tender for various projects worth US $100 million in North Western, Southern and Western Province had been awarded through single sourcing.

But Mweetwa said the contract in question was originated by the PF before elections.

“I mean I couldn’t believe. What is wrong with these colleagues? The issue of $100 million worth of projects in Southern, North Western, and Western Province, that project was initiated by the Patriotic Front before the general elections. Now that project has been rejected by the new dawn administration. The President has given a big no and you as journalists can find out from the Ministry of Finance. This is in public domain. There is no information to be hiding. Good
governance entails transparency and accountability,” he said. “The President said, ‘we cannot begin projects worth this amount of
money at a time like this one’. Prefabricated structures, no! They began a project that we said no to and they want to accuse us of corruption
and this is not the only project that the President has said not to. You are aware that not less than seven projects were taken to parliament to be able to be halted such as Luapula University because of
irregularities. I think let them find better things to do.”

Meanwhile, Mweetwa said the high price of fuel was a matter that the UPND had little control over.
“The increase of fuel is as a result of factors that are external for which as a country we have got no control whatsoever. Fuel has not been increased in Zambia, it has been increased by the producers. When you look at our current state of treasury, it is depleted. We cannot cushion the price of fuel. The only other available option is to go to the international market to borrow. Now how can you borrow to expend on a subsidy instead of investment? We feel it is not prudent to go out
there to borrow to cushion fuel prices when we are failing to pay the international debt. What the previous administration did was to come up with statutory instrument to wave VAT (Value Added Tax), to wave import duty and another tax to facilitate the elections to be overseen with a fuel price that is not escalated ,” said Mweetwa. “This government has extended that statutory instrument so that the measures that were put in place to mitigate price hikes are maintained. If we had removed them, you would then fault us.

So in so far as regulatory framework is concerned to mitigate against an escalated fuel price, we have maintained those wavers but because the increase of fuel out there is something out of our control, even when our inflation is nosediving from above 20 per cent in September last year to 9.7 now under a year you are seeing that value is not translating much in monetary terms for commodity prices because of the external factors. What is important for Zambians by tackling inflation it means the speed at which commodity prices are escalating has been halted by 50 per cent and that is progress.

We are confident that once fuel prices on the market stabilise, we expect that the kwacha, our currency will get its value. And that is the time people will appreciate having a low inflation rate. Zambia is among the few countries in the world that has managed to hold back the inflation rate. If it were not for fuel price hikes, Zambians would have been smiling that they are buying more in a K100 than they were previously able to.”

Top sniper and model from Brazil killed by Russian forces while fighting with Ukrainian troops in the war

0

A Brazilian model and female sniper has been killed by a Russian missile strike in Ukraine just three weeks after she joined the fight against Putin’s forces.

Thalito do Valle, 39, took part in humanitarian missions around the world and had previously fought against ISIS in Iraq. She was killed last week after a missile struck her bunker in Kharkiv, the north-eastern city.

The attack also killed former Brazilian Army soldier Douglas Burigo, 40, who returned to the bunker to find Thalita.

She was the only troop member left behind after the first missile strike took place, according to other fighters.

Thalita documented her conflict experience on her YouTube channel where her videos on fighting ISIS gained her 32,000 views.

She previously studied law after working as a model and actress in her youth, and has participated in animal rescues with NGOs.

Her videos reveal how she received sniper training when she joined the Peshmergas, the armed military forces of the independent Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Thalita’s brother Theo Rodrigo Viera described her as a hero with a vocation for saving lives and participating in humanitarian missions.

He explained that she had only been in Ukraine for three weeks, where she had been working as a rescuer as well as a sharpshooter.

She was also reportedly responsible for providing cover from advancing Russian forces.

After surviving a bombing in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Thalita explained to her family that she could not talk much as mobile phone activities were being monitored by Russian drones and would only call to let them know that she was fine.

The last time they spoke was last week Monday after Thalita had just moved to the city of Kharkiv.

I am open to giving women an opportunity – Pope Francis to give women a say in appointment of bishops

0

Pope Francis has revealed he wants to give women more top-level positions in the Vatican and disclosed that for the first time he would name women to a previously all-male Vatican committee that helps him select the bishops for the world .

The role of women in the Vatican was one of the topics the 85-year-old pontiff discussed in an interview with Reuters published Wednesday July 6.

The Pope’s comments come after a new constitution for the Holy See’s central administration came into effect last month allowing any baptised Catholic, including lay men and women, to head most Vatican departments.

“I am open to giving (women) an opportunity,” he said in the part of the 90-minute interview that discussed the new constitution for the central administration, known as the Curia.

He mentioned that last year, for the first time, he named a woman to the number two position in the governorship of Vatican City, making Sister Raffaella Petrini the highest-ranking woman in the world’s smallest country.

“Two women will be appointed for the first time in the committee to elect bishops in the Congregation for Bishops,” he said.

The move is highly significant because women will for the first time have a say in the appointment of the world’s bishops, who are all men.

“This way, things are opening up a bit,” he said.

Francis did not name the women or say when their appointment would be announced officially.

Members of the committee, which is now made up cardinals, bishops and priests, usually meet twice a month in Rome.

Asked which other Vatican department can be headed by a lay man or woman, Francis suggested that they could include the department for Catholic Education and Culture and the Apostolic Library which are currently headed by male clerics.

Francis has already named a number of women, both nuns and lay women, to Vatican departments.

In addition, Francis has named Nathalie Becquart, a French member of the Xaviere Missionary Sisters, as co-undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops, which prepares major meetings of world bishops held every few years.

REMEMBERING PAUL TEMBO: KILLED ON 06 JULY 2001

Paul Tembo became a member of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy and was elected to the National Assembly in Kabwe in the 1991 general elections. In 1992 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry. However, he was replaced by Shiabyungwe Shengamo after less than a year in post. In 1993 he became Deputy Minister of Finance, before being moved to Deputy Minister in the President’s Office later in the year.

Prior to the 1996 general elections Tembo was chosen as the MMD’s candidate despite opposition from local activists who supported Austin Chewe. However, Chewe ran as an independent and defeated Tembo. He was a campaign manager for President Frederick Chiluba as he sought to change the constitution to allow a third term in office.

However, after losing an election to become Vice Chairman of the MMD, Tembo resigned from the party and subsequently joined the opposition Forum for Democracy and Development party, becoming a member of its executive.

In 2001 Tembo was due to testify to a tribunal investigating three ministers for misappropriation. However, he was shot dead at his home in Lusaka in the early morning of 6 July. Apparently, Tembo’s wife was somewhat implicated and subsequently arrested and detained.

In 2001 Tembo was due to testify to a tribunal investigating three ministers for misappropriation I.e Katele Kalumba , Golden Mandandi and Peter Machungwa for diverting 700,000 USD meant for Road repairs to Finance the Party MMD. He was shot dead at his home in Lusaka in the early morning of 6 July.

The murder suspects who were been transported from Kitwes Kamfinsa Prisons died in what is believed to be a road accident set up at Kafulafuta Road, about 40kM from Ndola Town on their way to court in Lusaka when the Land Rover rammed into a Stationary Truck on a Sunday night Two Police officers died too. His wife was the prime suspect but was let off because of lack of witnesses. It is believed she was later appointed as a Deputy Ambassador in Foreign Mission, a position she privately accepted.

Paul Tembo was but among a number of politicians and individuals who died in mysterious circumstances after crossing path with the Chiluba regime. Among those short and killed is the lawyer Richard Nganga, Ronald Penza and Baldwin Nkumbula. Also killed in cold blood was Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s son and UNIP President Wezi Kaunda.

THEY’RE TAKING US TO NOWHERE BUT HELL – Fred M’membe

THEY’RE TAKING US TO NOWHERE BUT HELL

The economic policies being pursued by the leadership of this UPND pro transnational corporations, pro imperialist puppet regime will not take Zambians to the ‘promised land’. They will certainly not help the UPND leadership deliver on the many promises they made to the masses of our people to vote for them. In saying this, we are not at all being malicious or wishing them to fail. We are patriots who wish the best for our country and our people with or without us. But it is impossible to arrive in heaven, paradise or even purgatory, if one is on the broad road to hell.

These economic policies they are pursuing are not new to Zambia, Africa, Latin America and some parts of Asia. They have never led any poor country into prosperity. We have been on this unbriddled neoliberal capitalist path for the last 31 years.

It requires little intelligence – if a little is all one has – to realise that these neoliberal capitalist policies are taking us nowhere but to Calvary.

We have been struggling uphill long enough. We have suffered not only the torment of Calvary but also that of Sisyphus, who had to keep pushing the boulder up a hill and every time he was about to reach the top, it would roll back down and he would have to start all over again. Our situation is worse than Calvary because Calvary was climbed quickly; we have been climbing our hill for a long time, and we keep on having to start over. Calvary is preferable to Sisyphus’ torment, and if we had our Calvary, we should also have a resurrection.
We must choose concrete, realistic and definitive solutions – not take the path of agony. We must choose a clear, intelligent, effective solution – not head toward Calvary.

What we need is to find a real solution for the problem, but what will happen is that imperialism and its agents – the puppets, lackeys, it has helped assume power – will try to prevent the implementation of these solutions and divide our people, confuse our people, deceive our people, they give a little aid for this and that so that we remain on the path to Calvary – and not even a Calvary, but with the agonising torture of pushing the boulder up a never-ending hill. But one day our deceived people, our betrayed people are going to demand, “How much longer do we have to up with these conditions, this deception, these lies and abuses?” And then they will find solutions.

Clearly, the economic policies this puppet regime is pursuing, like the ones before it here and elsewhere, are taking us nowhere but to Calvary. There was a period when such policies increased the well-being of significant numbers of people as a by-product of seeking out profits for a few, but today the quests for profits comes into sharp conflict with people’s demands that their material and social needs should be fulfilled.

I fully agree with Pope Francis’ conclusion that market forces alone and “trickle-down” economic policies had failed to produce the social benefits their proponents claim. As Pope Francis correctly observed, trickle-down economics, the theory favoured by our neoliberal capitalists that tax breaks and other incentives for transnational mining corporations and big business eventually will benefit the rest of society through investment and job creation is a fallacy, a fleeting illusion.

The cost of living will continue to rise, hardships for Zambian families will continue to increase and prices of necessities will continue to rise. Soon the effects of being on the broad road to hell will be fully felt!

FAZ PROVIDES UPDATE ON WAFCON ELIGIBILITY CASES

FAZ PROVIDES UPDATE ON WAFCON ELIGIBILITY CASES

Following a flurry of inquiries in the aftermath of the statement by CAF over the ineligibility of some of Zambia’s key players at the Morocco 2022 Africa Cup of Nations for Women (WAFCON), the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) wishes to set the record straight.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) was taken aback by the position of the Confederation of African Football that seemed to disown its own processes before a watching world media.

“It was a grossly unfair statement from CAF because all the federations participating in this tournament have been subjected to the competition rules which have been set by CAF. In this respect we were compelled to deal with medical requirements as part of eligibility. For CAF to turn around and say they were not aware is grossly unfortunate,” says FAZ president Andrew Kamanga.

“Whatever we do is part and parcel of what CAF requires. We did not exclude any player but in this case followed CAF regulations as prescribed by CAF.”

“CAF needs to apply the same standard used across various leagues and FIFA competitions for consistency since the excluded players remain eligible to play in their leagues,” Kamanga says.
“Regrettably, the players being denied an opportunity to showcase their skills on African soil have been free to play at FIFA and International Olympic Committee organized competitions that deploys a less stringent standard.”

Kamanga has urged the nation to rally behind the Copper Queens despite the challenges the team has faced in their chase for continental glory.

“For now, we urge the country to support the girls and give them an extra push and we engage the authorities in the background. We urge the public to respect the individual rights of the affected players as medical ethics demand that they enjoy the right to privacy,” he says.

“Most importantly let us support the excluded players at this hour and ensure that justice is accorded to them.”

The Copper Queens this afternoon plays Tunisia in their Group B encounter that follows through their 0-0 draw against Cameroon on Match Day One.

DEC SHOULDN’T HAVE SAID THEY SUSPECT THE 15 FLATS BELONG TO ESTHER NYAWA TEMBO-FORMER PF SG MWILA

DEC SHOULDN’T HAVE SAID THEY SUSPECT THE 15 FLATS BELONG TO ESTHER NYAWA TEMBO-FORMER PF SG MWILA

FORMER PF secretary general Davies Mwila says DEC shouldn’t have rushed to the media to say the 15 flats they recently took possession of in State Lodge area are suspected to belong to Esther Nyawa Tembo.

And Mwila has insisted that the UPND is targeting former president Edgar Lungu and his family.

Meanwhile, Mwila says he has been summoned to appear before the Joint Investigations Team today, alongside former lands minister Jean Kapata and PF acting secretary general Nickson Chilangwa,

In an interview, Mwila wondered why the DEC did not first contact the suspected owner of the flats before announcing to the public.

“First and foremost, we do not know the owners of those flats until when the former first lady responds. The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) made a mistake. They should not have gone to the media saying that we suspect these flats belong to Esther Nyawa Tembo. What they should have done is to write to the suspect asking if the flats belong to her. After she has responded, then that is when you go to the media and announce whether those flats belong to her or not. You cannot say we have taken those flats and we will wait for three months if the owner will not come. If you are just suspecting, why mention the name? It means that they are not sure.

What I am saying is they have to do a thorough job. Let them not rush to the media. Why mention the name without asking the owner if surely those flats belonged to the former first lady?” he asked.

“That is why we’ve always said they have targeted at the former president’s family and the former president himself.

President Hakainde Hichilema is a bitter person. You have seen how the economy has gone bad. The fuel has gone up and the commodities are expensive. So it is time that this government concentrates on improving the living standards of people.

They are busy investigating but not getting tangible results. That is the problem. All those officers are just enjoying their allowances so they will continue making statements alarming the public. My position has not changed. They have targeted at the former president’s family and himself.”

And Mwila said things would continue getting harder going forward under the UPND government.

“When inflation drops, is it the cost of a bag of mealie meal which has dropped? Has the price of cooking oil or fuel dropped? Those are theories. When you are running the country or the economy using the book, you will not go anywhere.

They promised to reduce the price of mealie meal, fuel and fertiliser. They promised that they are going to sell the presidential jet but they are quiet. They promised that they are going to ensure that the exchange rate in terms of Kwacha to a Dollar goes to a single digit. On all those things, nothing has happened. Look at the recruitment exercise, it is in shambles. We do not know whether it will be there or not,” he said.

“They are now fighting amongst each other because there is no direction. It is almost a year but when is the economy going to improve? They promised that they will be buying maize at K250 but they are buying at K160. I can tell you simple mathematics. If the price of maize goes up from K150 to K160 it means the price of mealie meal will go up. That is the interpretation. Honourable [Mutale] Nalumango has not hidden the fact that the prices of fuel will continue going up and the people of Zambia must be ready to tighten up their belts. Things will be harder as we move forward under the UPND government.”

Meanwhile, Mwila said he had been summoned to appear before the JIT today and he suspected it was on issues to do with the PF secretariat plot.

“We are appearing before the Joint Investigations Team at 11:00 hours just after tomorrow, on Wednesday. I do not know what it is about. They invited Chilangwa, Jean Kapata and me. I am suspecting it is something to do with that PF secretariat plot. That is what I suspect,” said Mwila.

WRONG TIMING
…Chipata Caritas questions MPs’salary hike amidst high cost of living

WRONG TIMING
…Chipata Caritas questions MPs’salary hike amidst high cost of living

By Christopher Miti

CARITAS Chipata governance unit programmes coordinator John Mthaziko Zulu says it is wrong timing for members of parliament to push for
salary increments.
Last Thursday parliament unanimously approved to increase up to 17 per cent salaries and allowances paid to members of parliament.
The increment means that MPs would on average take home K80,000 and be entitled to K3,000 per sitting and enjoy a US $120,000 car loan.

During debate held in camera, all MPs including those from the ruling UPND adopted the report from the parliamentary reforms and modernisation committee which recommended that salaries and other benefits be adjusted upwards.
The report was submitted by committee vice chairperson Princess Kasune who is also Keembe UPND member of parliament.
But in an interview recently, Zulu said the high cost of living has not only affected one sector.

“The MPs are people representatives. Now if they are representing the people, what type of life are their people leading? Does it mean that the lives of the people they are leading in the constituencies are better off than theirs? Let the MPs be leaders of service to the masses that elected us,” he said. “We understand that the situation is not good on the part of the people in the constituencies compared to MPs. The parliamentarians have a lot of privileges compared to the grandmother
in the village, compared to that poor farmer in Vubwi.”

Zulu said parliamentarians should concentrate on working on laws that are not good.

“Let the MPs preoccupy themselves with other things that can help the people. Let them change laws that are in conflict with one another. Can they make laws that will benefit the people that they are representing! If the Ministry of Finance calls for a meeting to look at submissions for next year’s budget, let them look at Pay as You Earn.

The current Pay as You Earn is too high,” he said. “What some people are getting is quite low because a bigger chunk goes to government in form of Pay as You Earn. That is unacceptable. This issue of increasing their salaries should be suspended forthwith. We know that parliament cannot debate itself but we are pleading with them to suspend this issue.”
Days before the House moved the motion, Petauke Independent member of parliament Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda, who is the chief whip for Independent MPs in the House, said it was not true that parliamentarians are demanding increased allowances.

“I think this is just the wake of politics. You know most of the times people especially those from the opposition and ruling party, they will just bring issues to try and get at each other. The opposition
will accuse the ruling party and the ruling party will also accuse the opposition. I can assure you that there is nothing like that,” he said.

Banda said looking at the current economic status, no sensible MP can push for a salary increment.

“As for me, the people should not take this issue seriously because it is neither here nor there. The way the economy is, the MPs are representing the people and if we are to demand for salary increments, we can start with civil servants and other people who are in the private sector. Even a parent, there is no parent who will start eating before they feed the children,” he said.

Banda said he cannot support any motion that seeks to increase the allowances for MPs.

“In an event that that motion comes to parliament, we will shoot it down. As things stand, I don’t think there is any leader who can bring up such motions in parliament. I think you are aware that when fuel prices were increased, a lot of commodities went up but the salaries
for civil servants have not been increased. So as MPs we cannot ask for salary increments before asking for salary increments for our children who sent us to parliament to represent them,” said Banda.
But when Lumezi Independent member of parliament Munir Zulu, appeared on Beyond the Headlines last month, said MPs’ perks must be adjusted upwards to avoid corruption in parliamentary business.

“As much as you proponents of service would love to say it, there is no honour in this job. We try to speak for the people, our end game is to be called destitute. Our end game is to be called thieves. Our end game is that we will be laughed at. So what is wrong for members to be given that which they are entitled?” argued Zulu. “To go a little bit further these are members that approve, you have got people interrogating parastatal bodies like PAC (Public Accounts Committee). They are watching the happenings in Zesco, Development Bank of Zambia, Indeni, TAZAMA, ZAFFICO and then the MD (managing director) that are ratified by parliament get better allowances than members [of parliament]. So how do you cure corruption? If you tell me, you are governor for Bank of Zambia (BoZ) your name comes to parliament, what will stop you from bribing MPs that will get a less salary than you? Why not up the salary of those who ratify so that the one being ratified cannot buy his way into being ratified?”

RISING PRICES AMIDST FALLING INFLATION!
– Dr Fred M’membe

RISING PRICES AMIDST FALLING INFLATION!
By Dr Fred M’membe

When I was first asked in a television interview why prices should be going up while inflation was going down in Zambia, my response was that there was a mismatch or contradiction between the real economy involving the production of goods and services and the financial economy belonging to the speculative world of casinos.

Today a respected accountant and economic thinker of our country, Bob Sichinga, has joined the debate. And he says:

“I wish to put my views on the topic of reducing inflation while prices are rising.
Let me make it quite clear, that that phenomena, is neither mathematically nor econometrically, nor accounting wise possible; drawing from my very limited knowledge, training and experience of 53 yrs as a Certified Accountant; I therefore would concur with South African Economist Haroon Bhorat and several others who have questioned the validity of the information coming from the Central Statistics Agency.
The answer to explain this dictomy lies in HOW the “index” is designed or composed.

  1. The inflation rate is an index, composing many components.
    2(a) The first ones are the items or groups of items that make up the index; and how comprehensive the list is in reflecting the value chain of what the index seeks to reflect;
    2(b) the second is the value elements that are or get attached to each item; and how accurate these values are;
    2(c) the source of the items and the values that are used to compute the index;
  2. How are the values, in this case the very prices that are used;
  3. How has the formula been determined. So although it could be argued that the formula (algorithism) or even the entire index, have existed for sometime, they could have been subjected to a change which has proven that the results of the computation are no longer accurate.
The change may have been deliberately altered rather than errorenously done, to reflect a lowering of inflation, but without remembering that other elements will be out of senc. I suspect it is a manipulation.
This aspect may be deliberately concealed, because the author(s) is/ are embarrassed by the error they have made, and its consequences.
  4. My recommendation is that the entire index formula, and its calculation be subjected to an independent review/verification.
Not only on the determination but the accuracy of the value sources.
I am prepared to bet that it will be proven so. This is not an economic phenomena at all.”

There’s definitely some problems somewhere. We know of some statistical agencies that have gotten themselves in a fix by giving in to political pressures to cook figures. It’s easy to cook figures but coming out of it is very, very difficult. If not careful the agency totally loses respect, credibility, international recognition and support. We can only hope that our agency has not gotten itself into this situation now or in the past.

The situation of prices going up while inflation is going down is theoretically and practically a very serious contradiction that calls for disquisitions.

As the wind of change swept across the continent in the early 1990s, we would see a buoyant MMD finally dislodge the once-dominant UNIP from power after a scintillating election that would leave Kenneth Kaunda stunned.

President Fredrick Chiluba would proceed to construct a team with representation from every corner of the land: vice-president – Levy Mwanawasa (Copperbelt); minister without portfolio – Godfrey Miyanda (Eastern); finance – Emmanuel Kasonde (Northern); defence – Benny Mwila (Northern); home affairs – Chitalu Sampa (Northern); labour – Newstead Zimba (Eastern); foreign – Vernon Mwaanga (Southern); legal affairs – Rodger Chongwe (Eastern); local government – Michael Sata (Northern); health – Boniface Kawimbe (Northern); information – Stan Kristafor (minority group); commerce – Ronald Penza (Northern); mines – Humphrey Mulemba (Nothr-Western).

Readers may recall that although the Eastern Province had literally rejected MMD and overwhelmingly voted for UNIP, Chiluba would still appoint a good number of people from the region as full cabinet ministers; notably among them, Lieutenant General Christon Tembo, Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda and of course, his colleague from the labour movement, Newstead Zimba etc.

Following the botched third term campaign, Levy Mwanawasa would emerge victorious amidst protests and complaints of widespread rigging from the main opposition at the time, the United Party for National Development. Although certain sections of society would waste no time lampooning the new cabinet as a “family tree”, in reality Mwanawasa had gone out of his way to allocate positions fairly, including those from the regions where he was out-rightly rejected such as his vice – Lupando Mwape, a Northerner. The rest of the notable cabinet ministers were as follows: finance – Ng’andu Magande (Southern); defence – George Mpombo (Copperbelt); home affairs – Ronnie Shikapwasha (Central); foreign affairs – Kabinga Pande (North-Western); legal affairs – George Kunda (Central); local government – Benny Tetamashimba (North-Western); information – Vernon Mwaanga (Southern); commerce – Felix Mutati (Northern); secretary to Cabinet – Leslie Mbula (Copperbelt).

And when his deputy, Rupiah Banda, stepped into his shoes following his sudden demise outside the country, he obviously had to effect changes to the cabinet to prove he was his own man by roping in his loyalists: vice-president – George Kunda (Central); finance – Situmbeko Musokotwane (Western); defence – Kalombo Mwansa (Luapula); home affairs – Lameck Mangani (Eastern); foreign affairs – Kabinga Pande (North-Western); legal – George Kunda (Central); local government – Benny Tetamashimba (North-Western); mines – Kalombo Mwansa (Northern) information – Ronnie Shikapwasha (Central); commerce – Felix Mutati (Northern); health – Kapembwa Simbao (Northern); secretary to Cabinet – Joshua Kanganja (North-Western).

It’s clear from the above that almost all the provinces were represented in this cabinet..

Honeybee withdraws $17m law suit against State

By Mwaka Ndawa

HONEYBEE Pharmacy Limited has abandoned the matter in which it sued the State in the Lusaka High Court demanding over US $17 million for the ‘defective’ drugs, condoms and gloves it supplied to the Ministry of Health in 2020.

According to a notice of discontinuance filed before court, the pharmaceutical company has hinted of its intention to settle the matter out of court.

“Take notice that pursuant to the provisions of the arbitration Act No .19 of 2000 and with a view to an amicable settlement of these proceedings herein. The plaintiff wholly discontinues these proceedings to pursue an ex-curia in the matter,” read the notice.

In this case, Honeybee wanted the court to compel government to pay it $4,998,375 for the 500 medical kits it supplied under contract No. MOH/SP/032/19-02 and in the alternative for specific performance of the same contract.

In its statement of claim, Honeybee said in November 2019 it entered into a written agreement with the Ministry of Health for the supply of 22,500 health center kits under contract No. MOH/SP/032/19-02 which was approved by government and endorsed by Honeybee and the Ministry of Health on behalf of Zambians.

It said the contract was worth $17,958,150 for the supply of various medical kits and related products as requested by the State through the Ministry of Health.

Honeybee said between August 2019 and December 2020, it supplied the State with 500 medical kits out of the required number and they were all subjected to examination, inspection and verification and a certificate of acceptance of goods under various invoices were issued and various delivery notes valued at $3,990,700 at the time of delivery.

“It was an express term of contract that payment shall be made promptly and expeditiously or shall not exceed 60 days from the date of submission of an invoice or claim by the plaintiff,” Honeybee said.

“Despite the contract providing for part payment of the sums due, the plaintiff used their own funds to supply the kits and are now seeking full payment.”

Honeybee said several reminders have been made by its lawyers Tutwa Ngulube and Company to the Ministry of Health but they have been ignored without advancing a reason for failure to pay as there was an express term of the contract which provided for interest on the delayed payment.

However, the State in its intended defence said the plaintiff was not entitled to the reliefs it was seeking for reasons that the contract entered into between Honeybee Pharmacy Limited and the PF regime was procured through fraud, incompetence, illegality, corruption and abuse of office.

It said the parties entered into the purported contract on November 22, 2019 and yet Honeybee Pharmacy was only incorporated on April 2, 2020.

The office of the Attorney General further indicated that the pharmaceutical company was not entitled to the $17 million it was demanding as the goods it supplied were expired and it was communicated to, to fetch the goods from the warehouse after they were rejected.

Josiah Simachela, a chief State advocate in the Attorney General’s chambers, said the goods supplied were not salable.

“The supplied medicines were not in accordance with the technical specifications and standards prescribed by the contract,” Simachela said.

In its intended counter claim, the State said it discovered that the plaintiff had no capacity to enter into the contract in issue purportedly signed on November 22, 2019 as the plaintiff was not yet incorporated at the time.

“By Section 89(1)(a) of the Public Procurement Act No. 8 of 2020, a bidder is eligible to participate in a procurement if the bidder has the legal capacity to enter into a contract. Contrary to the provisions of the law, the plaintiff entered into the purported contract on November 22, 2019 and yet the plaintiff was only incorporated in April 2, 2020,” he said.

“By Section 90(4) of the Public Procurement Act, No. 8 of 2020, qualification of a bidder shall be assessed by examining whether the bidder meets the qualifications criteria. The Ministry of Health, in collusion with the procurement entity, ignored the assessment and proceeded to award a non-existing entity at the time with a contract.”

Simachela said the contracting of Honeybee was fraudulent and it has been reported to the Drug Enforcement Commission and the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The State wants the court to nullify the contract of November 22, 2019 it entered into with Honeybee and the purported agreement for payment of the pre-clearance fee.

The State also sought an order for reimbursement of whatever sum received by Honeybee in respect of the impugned contract.

I learn more by looking very sheepish, says HH

I learn more by looking very sheepish, says HH

By Fanny Kalonda

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says in solving problems the country is faced with, there is need not to drift to the opposite direction and do what was done in the past.

He says many “who are not close to me take a posture that I am not aware of certain things. Yet am aware. I do it deliberately, I learn more by looking very sheepish”.

President Hichilema said the government is putting frames in place for the economy to take off of which the progress will be seen in 12 months.

During the memorial of Gladstone Kamuzu Natala ‘Makowani’ in Lubombo, Mazabuka district on Sunday, President Hichilema said the growth of the economy is coming to fruition.

“Anybody who that lived in this country knew what was happening in last 10 but seven years. Society was compromised, society was divided, segregation was a norm…But in solving that problem we should not drift the opposite direction. We should not do what those who did the wrong things did against us because if we do we are no different from them. It means we don’t occupy a higher moral ground. I argue that we occupy a more higher ground. What we are here to do is to bring equity. What we are able to do is to unite not to divide. We found divisions, we are uniting. What we are here to do is to unite not to divide. What we are here for is to include and not to exclude. I share your concerns. I know where you are coming from. You and I are close friends. I know what you went through but we will get there in the correct manner within the rule of law. We jump the rule of law, we will be classified as those,” he told the audience. “And I use this opportunity to explain the inflation you see coming down from 24.6 per cent 10 months ago to 9.7 now is what we shared with Makowani to stabilise the economy. Exchange rate that you now see, that you can buy a rand using one kwacha, stability is what we shared with Gladstone. Now we are putting the frames together. We can take off the economy, many are not seeing it but you will see it in 12 months’ time. 24 months you will see it with your eyes. Why would we give up the fight that he and others died for? Never.”

Natala was in the UPND presidential campaign team until his death last year in June.

And President Hichilema said his government would ensure input from all provinces in governing the country unlike what was done 10 months ago.

He said the new dawn administration had brought about freedom which was lost, the rule of law, the human rights and liberties.
“Many who are not close to me take a posture that I am not aware of certain things. Yet am aware. I do it deliberately, I learn more by looking very sheepish. Looking unaware but I’m actually alive to the issues – that we are breaking down those issues properly so that we don’t create a new problem. So we shall ease that situation. You yourself have acknowledged that 10 months ago the country was run by four provinces only. And that is a fact,” he said. “Today the country is run by 10 provinces of our country – step number one. So watch the space. Slowly, but we will not achieve this in a day. It’s a long walk. It is easy to destroy the country then difficult to build. But we are determined to make Makowani count. To walk the tough long difficult road. To turnaround…we have brought about freedom which we lost, the rule of law, the human rights, liberties. They are here. But we are yet to achieve the most thing that Makowani and I talked about. Not as cousins but as friends sharing an agenda, economic emancipation.”
President Hichilema urged his ministers and party members to acknowledge that them being in power is because of people’s efforts.

He wondered how some people forget easily that they are in power because of the people.

“I want to address the party and the ministers seated there. We are ministers because of many people’s efforts. We are permanent secretaries because of many people’s efforts. We are commissioners, we are what we are looking…We are what we are because of John, there. Sometimes we forget that we seek public office to work for the people. Sometimes we forget. Sometimes I ask myself and say Hmmmm Hakainde maybe you are an awkward individual. How is it that people don’t remember how they got into office quickly?” President Hichilema said. “How is it possible? How is it possible that sometimes we assume that we are greater than 18 million people? We are greater than Makowani, his sacrifices! I intend to go to a memorial service of all our colleagues who walked at the expense of getting killed by PF thugs. To be honest, the efforts of Makowani and many others in this province whose names are not known, many of whom were detained, we got lawyers of work 24/7 all over. To take our kids out of detentions, here in Mazabuka, in Monze, Namwala, in Mpulungu…Where I was not allowed to use the airport, my airport. We are here today because of the efforts of those in Mpulungu…I want to remind Zambians 10 months ago we were not able to assemble in this manner, in this diversity without someone who is coming here to be part of being teargassed or being beaten by party thugs.”
President Hichilema noted that people forget quickly.

“That the freedoms we enjoy today to assemble, to associate, to share ideas was not available 10 months ago. How can we have such short memories? We are here gathering in this manner remembering Makowani. Gladstone put his life on the line for us to be able to assemble in this manner which is to us just ordinary. But 10 months ago this was abnormal. What was then normal was teargas, was blood, in the bus stops, in the markets. For some of us, in our homes, our homes were broken down several times,” he recalled.

President Hichilema said that if anyone knows “of a freedom fighter who was put in jail because of the struggle when the UPND was coming into power,” he be made aware.

“I made a commitment that when we cross over and not if, we shall take them out of jail and we have taken them out of jail. If anyone knows of a freedom fighter who was put in jail because of the struggle and not out of prison, let me know. Let me know. We will do it in honour of Makowani. He didn’t make it, he didn’t make it…” said President Hichilema.

Former first lady Esther Lungu’s flats remain seized but we have not arrested her, the Drug Enforcement Commission has said

IT’S EASY TO FIND FLATS OWNER – DEC

By Kombe Mataka

DRUG Enforcement Commission (DEC) director general Mary Chirwa says they are yet to establish if the 15 double storey houses in Lusaka’s State Lodge area belong to former first lady Esther Lungu.

Responding to a query from The Mast, Chirwa however said Zesco pre-paid metres of the houses show that Esther Nyawa Tembo is the owner.

At the latest University of Zambia’s School of Education graduation ceremony held at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, Esther was among graduates. And the former first lady’s name was clearly announced as Esther Nyawa Tembo, what is believed to be her maiden name.

DEC on Friday took possession of newly built and fully completed 15 double storey houses in a complex in State Lodge area, east of Lusaka.

DEC public relations officer Mathias Kamanga said the action followed a tip from members of the public.

He said the law enforcement agency had been monitoring the housing complex but that there has been no-one seen entering the premises.

“We don’t want to accuse anyone yet but our investigations point to an Esther Nyawa Tembo as being the owner of the houses,” said Kamanga.

“As DEC we have taken possession which is different from seizure because there was no-one, not even a caretaker.”

And Chirwa said it was only Zesco prepaid metres that could confirm that the owner of the property was Esther Nyawa Tembo.

“This is an ongoing investigation; hence we haven’t arrested anyone yet. The place has been abandoned. [Ministry of] Lands and [Lusaka City] Council have no record on that property. In fact, at lands planning, it shows that it’s bare land which remained after the subdivision of F/11031. It’s only Zesco that can confirm now, as Zesco records on prepaid metres showed that they were registered under those names (Esther Nyawa Tembo),” explained Chirwa. “We had no ways of proving that it was the [former] first lady until we do further verifications, and that’s why we said we are yet to establish which Esther this is, which is very easy. As per lands records, it’s a nonexistent property.”

Asked how possible it was that the system was indicating that the property in question and the land where it sat was non-existent when they were physical properties, former lands minister Jean Kapata said she would comment on the matter this Wednesday.

“I will comment on it on Wednesday,” said Kapata.

“LEAVE THE FORMER FIRST LADY ALONE, AMB MWAMBA SAYS”
…as he dares DEC to name her officially over property ownership

4th July 2022 LUSAKA

Mr Emmanuel Mwamba, the former envoy of Zambia to the African Union (AU) has challenged law enforcement to simply approach Mrs Esher Nyawa Tembo Lungu about apartments she owns, which they suspect to be proceeds of crime.

Ambassador Mwamba said its totally unnecessary to ´excite´ Zambians that an Esther Nyawa Tembo has apartments illegally acquired whom they don’t know and yet they know the registered owner as a political ploy.

“DEC saying, we have an unknown person in the name of Esther Nyawa Tembo is wrong because the whole country knows Mrs Esther Nyawa Tembo is the former First Lady,” Ambassador Mwamba said, “you mean the former First Lady or the former President cant build a block of flats?”

Ambassador said its sad to see the first family ostensibly being targeted over a mere block of apartments when an “ordinary Zambian can build similar flats or even more.”

Mr Mwamba decried the habit of “scandalising people” using the law even when you know they can afford to have the property they own, and doing it wantonly so without evidence.

In the case of the former First Lady Esther Lungu´s apartments seized by DEC over the weekend, Ambassador Mwamba challenged the DEC to state whether they did not have prior paper week to authenticate the ownership before going to the media to scandalise her and her family before even going to court, like the case has been in many other cases of so called “proceeds of crime” suspects.

He challenged the DEC to “simply walk up to the former first lady or the former President and ask about those flats not scandalise them in the media.”
Ambassador Mwamba, a vocal critic of the UPND government on a number of governance, rule of law and economic issues warmed that the ruling party ´risked´ decampaigning itself ahead of the 2026 polls if they deliberately and maliciously tried to ´crash´ their PF opponents without regard to law.

Ambassador Mwamba has described the ongoing probes against PF senior members as a targeted political fight to silence the party ahead of 2026.

WHY ISN’T THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT INTERVENING IN THE CASE OF CORNWELL MULEYA?

WHY ISN’T THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT INTERVENING IN THE CASE OF CORNWELL MULEYA?

By Lutangu Wasilota

Cornwell Muleya is a Zambian national who is the immediate past CEO of Uganda Airlines. A seasoned professional, he is a chemical engineer from the University of Bath (England) and an Accountant (fellow Association Chartered Certified Accountants – ACCA). He is an aviation consultant and he is the Founder & Director of Cornwell Aviation Consultants Limited, an aviation consultancy based in Lusaka, Zambia.

Starting out his career as an audit manager in the late 80’s, Mr. Muleya ventured into the aviation industry in 1995 when he took up a job at Air Botswana, rising to the position of CEO. After that he went to Air Mauritius as the Chief Financial Officer before coming back to Zambia to head Zambezi Airlines as CEO. After Zambezi Airlines he went to Kenya to head Al’s (Aircraft Leasing Services), and then finally Uganda at Uganda Airlines where he is the immediate past CEO of the airline.

Obviously by now almost everyone knows that he was arrested on the 21st of June, 2022 accused of corruption, but that was after he sued the Uganda government for almost $1 million dollars for unfair dismissal.

Mr. Muleya’s problems started when a January 27, 2021 dossier he made to President Museveni indicated that intrigue, corruption and interference were the order of the day at Uganda Airlines.

“According to the report, some board members have on several occasions met with some members of the management team to inflate invoices in a bid to make money out of the airline and that this has led to division among the management team as well as inefficiency in the management of the airline.

The report indicated that managers working with backing from some of the board members to inflate invoices have on several occasions to slow down some of the airline projects as they push their own selfish agendas with protection from the “godfathers” on the board.

The report indicated that some board members view the CEO as being too rigid and not flexible on the issue of corruption as people find it hard to work with him”.

The people at Uganda Airlines started pushing for a Ugandan to be a CEO and flush out any foreigner working there in top management. This according to me is ‘NEPOTISM’, they want their ‘OWN’ to head the Airline.

Mr. Cornwell Muleya is an asset that we can use in Zambia to transform Zambia Airways. The government can intervene and bring him back home and give him a position as a Director in Zambia Airways in preparation for him to takeover from the current CEO when the deal is revisited in 2025. Look at how he transformed Uganda Airlines in a very short period of time. Let him come to Zambia Airways so that he can help out the new start up since he has experience in doing that.

YES, WE WORKED WITH NDAMBO IN 2021 & MOBILIZED MONEY FOR PF VOTE PROTECTION & YOUTHS SECURITY & HE IS FREE TO CONTEST AS PARTY LEADER – DORA

Former Information Minister in the PF regime Dora Siliya has confirmed Media reports that James Ndambo is their (PF) member.

Dora says Ndambo working closely with Former President Edgar Lungu made a lot of financial contributions to the PF and especially vote protection and youth security.

She says My Home Town was her childhood brain adding that Ndambo was asked to join PF fund party activities which included chiefs across the country.

“Ndambo is not a stranger to the PF. He worked with us in the background. Initially, when he wanted to go public with his gestures, he faced resistance but after he met President Lungu, the Central Committee of the party was informed to work with him in mobilising resources for the 2021 vote protection, campaigns and all and so, I won’t deny the fact that he is our party member and he is free to contest as party leader at the coming convention,” said Dora Siliya to George Lemba.

Asked if she would contest as Petauke Central MP under the PF leadership of Ndambo, Dora stated that she would contest anywhere including in Lusaka but that this is not her priority.

James Ndambo has come under fierce political attacks including suspicions that he is a ritualist when he pretended not to know the facts and also not declaring that he was a PF member but kept saying that he was not interested in politics and yet his language is political.

According to PF insiders, Ndambo is the only pillar to help rebrand the party which suffered election losses in 2021 though PF founders like Chishimba Kambwili and Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba are stating that no chancer should be allowed to run PF after Edgar Lungu.

James Ndambo in 2006 at the UPND convention after the death of Mazoka lost the election to Hakainde Hichilema as he (Ndambo) only got 3 votes out of hundreds of voters drawn from across the country.

It was then that he went into an alliance with the MMD as an underground operative and later joined PF again as underground operative, Koswe has been told.

James Ndambo should be arrested for treason and all those officers who where saluting for him dismissed- UPND cadre Edward Roy Makayi

By Edward Roy Makayi

Ndambo should be arrested for treason and all those officers who where saluting for him dismissed.

The moment I saw Dora Siliya in his group I knew something was fishy. Politics aside believe you me Dora Siliya does not just associate with people for nothing. These guys are cooking up something.

I personaly caused the premature reshuffle of then Energy Minister Hon Dora Siliya out the ministry and got all 12 Zesco directors fired. Everything was ready to sell Zesco.

Today Zambia is paying back Lapgreen so many millions of dollars for Zamtel repossesion a deal done by Dora Siliya she is not even affected today, Malawi Maize Scandal, Lusaka radar installations etc all that was Dora Siliya yet there she is dinining with a millonaire yet you Zambians left to pay for the mess she caused to the nation for so many years. Magarate Mwanakatwe got $600 million from CEEC despite being an MP and a minister she still borrowed money mearnt for citizens empowerement and defaulted up to now no one knows how this story died yet she is there with James Ndambo in Choma. As for Dora Siliya awesure That woman is cunning and a deadly viper where sweet talk is concerned. They are selling Ndambo as the next big thing good as he seems to be with rotten people am out.

With this hunger tuletukwa nama US dollars but believe me not all glitter is gold. I just blame our justice system has really let us down. I would choose to see thieves in jail than being given a job alas all of them are free and running up and down.

Zambians will question us in 2026 how a corrupt former minister is able to sue the government for K50 million its not making sense to me.

Anyone who associates with criminals who caused misery for this nation without mercy is an enemy of humanity. Show me your friends I will tell you who you are.

I am not jealous or against Mr Ndambo but his association of former PF ministers is not seating well with me just give them 3 months you will see save this post.

James Ndambo inspires Nevers Mumba: “I am setting up My Home Town concept in Chinsali”

Ndambo inspires Nevers to replicate MHT in Chinsali

By Kombe Mataka

MMD leader Nevers Mumba says most African nations including Zambia have long believed that government must be the only mother which all the citizens breastfeed from.

Speaking through a video link at the
Home Town Beauty Show organised by Choma born philanthropist James Ndambo held in Choma on Saturday, Mumba said it was “this socialist approach that continued to compromise efforts to develop the African continent”.
He said the event announced an era of fast tracking development in the nation.

“Chairman Ndambo and Africa Union Development have opened a new chapter of how to improve the quality of lives of Zambians. Chairman Ndambo is the son of the soul upon whose life God has chosen to endow favour in his business. The options before him are many. He can choose to keep enriching himself and his family away from the pain and sufferings of his fellow Zambians or choose to invest back in the lives of his brothers and sisters in the nation. This is the choice that he has made. Today we gather to honour the selflessness and commitment of this exceptional Zambian in adding value to our nation. Most African nations, including Zambia, have long believed that government must be the only mother which we should all breastfeed from. It is this socialist approach that continues to compromise efforts to develop our great continent. Great nations and great economies have been created by the innovation of private citizens. All we need is freedom from African government, just freedom,” Mumba said. “A free man can achieve the impossible. Freedom to dream, freedom to innovate and freedom to express oneself. It is these freedoms that create dynamism in any progressive society. With the introduction of a liberalised economy now in 1991 by the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, Zambia provided a path for the private sector to spearhead economic growth. Mr Ndambo is a perfect example in demonstrating this policy. If every successive Zambian can embrace My Home Town vision of Mr Ndambo, Zambia will develop faster than any government can afford to achieve. Community initiatives must become the engine of development. Governments depend on the ingenuity of community initiative. Government is a sum total of the the combined initiatives of different communities in the nation.”
He said he would replicate the vision of My Home Town in Chinsali.

“I mentioned to chairman Ndambo that I have been so inspired by his vision that I plan to replicate My Home Town (MHT) vision in my own home town of Chinsali in Nothern Province. I hope many more Zambians will choose this path. It is not the abundance of resources that will make this initiative effective, but the determination and a deep love for our country. I feel at home with such a vision as it agrees with my God given vision Zambia Shall Be Saved,” said Mumba.

And Ndambo said My Home Town called on Zambians to exercise their talents and fly high like an eagle.
“We would like your talents to be in full flight. If you want to fly among individuals who want to take you backwards you are going to crush. People are going to castigate you, they will
jealous of your achievements. Jealous of your beauty. Those who are beautiful rather than waste your energy flapping, you need sail, you go right above. If there is a volcano, you fly above the volcano. You survive,” he said.
Ndambo said his organisation’s thrust was to unlock the human potential.

“Everybody is gifted. We focus on unlocking that potential. There are so many NGOs around the world, we don’t want to be like any other NGO
to try and donate gifts. We focus on unlocking the human potential,” said Ndambo, who is African Union Holdings chief executive officer.

And My Home Town patron Dora Siliya said citizens must be the change that they want to see.
“Be the change you want to see in your community. Be the change you want to see in your town. Be the change you want to see in your country and the rest of the world. Somebody said you cannot stop an idea whose time has come. After years of an idea in practice, in 2009 the chairman Mr James Ndambo of the Home Town Organisation like many of us, he has travelled the world and met many important people, successful by any standard. However, he also realised very quickly that one is not an island and that our lives are connected to all the people that we meet who end up connecting us to even people we have not met before. This is the reason we are all here tonight,” Siliya said. “For the many who have met the chairman, we have learnt the following; (1) That small talk does not get things done. (2). That strength is not who you beat down but whom you lift up. (3). Kindness is more
attractive than being cruel. (4). That people will never stop talking but leave them behind. Fly high and leave them behind and lastly, that smiling is free.”

She said Ndambo begun My Home Town as a platform to initially connect with family members. “Later it was expanded as an initiative of like minds interested in business mentoring and wealth creation. He believed that in each one of us there was potential to create and create any business opportunity,” Siliya explained.

She said the objectives of My Home Town was to grow local businesses.
“This is why we are all here in Choma tonight. These business supporting activities have been held in different parts of the country such as 2020 when similar activities were held on the Copperbelt, Eastern and Lusaka provinces. The main aim is to ignite money circulation through procurement of goods and services by local residents and visitors and that is you and I in all our home towns,” she said. “This initiative has become even more imperative after post-pandemic when many of us have lost loved ones and businesses and we all realised we cannot depend on any one, not even in the tourism sector, except on ourselves as Zambians.”

Siliya said My Home Town was also looking for exceptional students who have been supported to universities both locally and abroad.

“I have been a beneficiary of some of this student support back in the 1990s when I was a student at the University of Cambridge in the UK. In the medical field a number of Zambians have been supported with health care especially in India where we have patients. Now recently people have been talking to me about who is Mr James Ndambo. Indeed, he is a Zambian born, a South African citizen, a very progressive African. He is an accomplished businessman, a global citizen and a champion of building bridges across differences and I have witnessed this first hand,” said Siliya.

“Each one of us has the capacity to do something to create wealth. To create jobs, to support schools, to support clinics, to support orphanages, youth groups, women groups. It just takes one person with an idea to change anything good…”

Tourism minister Rodney Sikumba announced at the event that President Hakainde Hichilema would host the Diaspora Network meeting to discuss opportunities that existed in Zambia in Livingstone.

“I have realised that not only Lusaka should hold such events. Not only should Livingstone hold such events, but we are looking forward to having each and every province to hold such events by having one of us become that My Home Town icon,” he said.
Sikumba said he would sell the product of hospitality Zambia had.
Choma Central member of parliament Cornelius Mweetwa, who is also Southern Province minister, created some controversy at the event after he corrected Ndambo’s statement that the nurses who were expelled from a nursing institution were students and that they had been reinstated.

“It is true that nurses by the description of students at Chilonga Mission Hospital were dismissed by their institution because of what
they had done. The Minister of Health hon Sylvia Masebo under the new dawn administration led by President Hakainde Hichilema did reinstate them there and then. They are not nurses. They are student nurses. They are right away at their school. Leadership demands transparency and accountability. I would like to indicate that since those students are still in school they take up that opportunity to be educated by the offer you have given. This is not the first offer
you have given. A few weeks ago here in Choma you offered to train police officers. We love your candidness,” said Mweetwa in response to an education opportunity offer announced for the students by Ndambo who expressed misgivings about the action which he claimed was meted on
them.

UPND ANTI-POOR …HH politics out of touch
with reality – Silavwe

By Fanny Kalonda

GOLDEN Party of Zambia president Jackson Silavwe says the new dawn government is turning out to be the most anti-poor and pro-foreign monopoly capital government Zambia has ever had since independence.

Commenting on the recent fuel increment announced by the Energy Regulation Board, Silavwe said the government’s economics seems to burying both the poor and local businesses in the grave of very high cost of living and doing business.

The ERB has adjusted upwards the pump prices of petroleum products by K1.80 per litre for petrol, K2.37 per litre for diesel and K2.51 per litre for kerosene.

ERB board chairperson Reynolds Bowa announced at a briefing on Thursday that the adjustment in the pump prices was due to the unprecedented increase in the price of petroleum products on the international market.

Bowa said the recorded increase in international oil prices was mainly attributed to the global oil demand and supply imbalance caused by a combination of factors such as the continued geopolitical tension in Ukraine and Russia and increased oil demand worldwide.

“The new dawn government is turning out to be the most anti-poor and pro-foreign monopoly capital government Zambia has ever had since independence. This month’s insensitive fuel increase is testament to that position,” Silavwe said.

He charged that President Hichilema’s economics is out of touch with the reality on the ground.

Silavwe said the government’s economics seems to favour the foreign monopoly capital operating in Zambia than majority poor Zambians.

“Under the new dawn ‘normal’, small and medium local businesses will continue to be punished with every monthly price review and the majority poor Zambians will continue to face off with high higher poverty levels. New dawn government must be lifting the poor out of poverty not burying them in it. The new dawn economics seems to burying both the poor and local businesses in the grave of very high cost of living and doing business,” said Silavwe. “President Hichilema’s economics is out of touch with the reality on the ground. It is un-relatable to the common man in our communities. President HH should come down to the Zambian earth now before it’s too late for him if he really cares about his people. Once again, we call on the new dawn administration to initiate local intervention measures to protect the poor and local businesses.”

A BRIEF INSIGHT ABOUT MR JAMES NDAMBO

A BRIEF INSIGHT ABOUT MR JAMES NDAMBO

People may wonder why I’m sharing this information on my Facebook platform when there is already a lot of information gathered on social media about James Ndambo.

Well, like any other ordinary Zambian, I’m also keen on following the happenings around.

To begin with I appreciate the good gesture that Mr Ndambo has shown towards his hometown and the surrounding cities in an effort to improve the lives of the less privileged and empower the communities at large.

I first heard about James Ndambo in 2010 at my home village in Mandala in Chief Mapanza’s Area of Choma District. It was at a time when I went to mourn my uncle Mr Mankondole of Han’gombe village.

Mandala village (my village) is about 1.5 KM from a village popularly called Kamunzi where this great son of the soil James Ndambo comes from. James Ndambo was born in the mid-nineteen fifties (1955) from a humble, highly spiritual and upstanding family.

His father was a shoemaker and a very spiritual man, most of the media houses have not captured the story of Mr Ndambo’s father. Here is a beep about him, his father was George Henwood Mkandawire born in Mzimba Nyasaland, modern Malawi.

Mr Mkandawire is popularly known as a father of million believers in the New Apostolic Church. Many denominations in Zambia were brought by the white missionaries, exceptionally the New apostolic Church was brought by James’ father.

Just like his father, James Ndambo is a staunch New Apostolic church member since birth. The Gesture Mr Ndambo has shown to the New Apostolic Church is a sign and belief, that his ready to live and die for. It is a symbol of faith that runs in his bloodstream and not just faith professed by mouth.

Let me not forget to talk about how Mr George Henwood found himself in Kamunzi the birthplace of Mr James Ndambo. When the missionary teacher who taught George Henwood Mkandawire went back to South Africa George decided to follow him in South Africa.

It was in South Africa where George Henwood Mkandawire became converted to the New Apostolic Church beliefs. After some years George returned to Northern Rhodesia present-day Zambia, where he established the first New Apostolic church in Livingstone.

After all these achievements, he moved further and settled in Kaumbwe village and established another church in kamunzi the birthplace of Ndambo’s family.

I have written all this background for people to see that Mr James Ndambo comes from an extraordinary family deep-rooted in Christian values and his giving is anchored on Christian values.

When I behold how great Mr James Ndambo has become, it gives me hope that it is possible for one to become like him.

This is because the environment that shaped his formative years is the same environment that raised all of us in the area.

It is a great lesson to all of us that, where you begin doesn’t dictate where you shall end up. Mr James Ndambo has traversed the world and has remembered his hometown.

Some of the greatest and notable contributions include building the church in Kamunzi and refurbishing it into a modern standard.

Besides, he has built another modern church in Hachiinda village which he was commissioning last week.

Apparently, he has also pledged to light up Maubwe village and the surrounding places covering over 70 households.

Taking a leaf from Mr James Ndambo’s story, my organization is into an empowerment scheme.

So far, we have trained over 200 Members in basic chicken management practices in Mbabala, Macha and Choma town and all await empowerment.

Similarly, we want to empower communities through our empowerment program. We believe in empowering communities only then can Zambia develop.

Development should start from the grassroots. In order to achieve the aforementioned, we want to be connected to various networks to do more for our people under the umbrella of MY HOME TOWN.

LAURA MITI VS JAMES NDAMBO

By Chibamba Kanyama

The James Ndambo factor will be with us for some time to come for its various connotations, in most cases people coming up with own conclusions beyond the motivation of Ndambo himself.

Laura Miti shared an interesting piece that some have concluded was an attack on Mr. Ndambo. For me, that was not an attack but a valuable piece of information that should help Mr. Ndambo engage even much more profitably next time around.

Every after an event like the one we witnessed in Choma, wise people carry out an introspection, an assessment and review the process to ascertain if the objectives were met. The key take-away is ascertaining lessons to better the next outreach.

At the IMF, impact assessment after events like Spring and Annual Meetings is extensive. It comes by way of ‘dirty picture’, which is about reading all forms of public commentary including harsh criticism mainly by civil society who rarely have kind words about the institution. This feedback is summerised in a three pager take-away, including narratives critical to the event. Lessons learnt can be a harsh reality but that’s what big successful institutions do.

Laura Miti, in her usual interactive and liberal style of writing, gave valuable advice that Mr. Ndambo will appreciate more than the kudos he is receiving from some of us. She carefully poured out her opinion without malice.

What Laura shared is a lesson I learnt in 2012 when I lost a close relative in the village and I responded by funding the entire funeral, literally 100 percent. I thought I had helped a great deal and offered relief to my relatives until I got wind of complaints, ‘You mean that’s the way he can tell us he has money? We know we are poor, but he should have allowed us to buy even a goat so that the focus is shifted from him Mr.

Money to the community doing something jointly to support the funeral.’

These are some of the life lessons that change our stakeholder management strategies and I am 100 percent sure my dear elder brother will appreciate Laura because she has added incredible value to his philanthropic outreach. He is a smart businessman and he has progressed because he listens to honest feedback.

I personally learnt something from Miti’s post to the extent I invited her to join me in some corporate governance training engagements. This is because in such projects, you need individuals of solid intellectual calibre and integrity, able to communicate the hard truth to clients who have paid you huge sums of money!

Serving UPND officials in Govt portfolios urged to be thankful – President HH

President Hakainde Hichilema has reminded government officials including ministers and permanent secretaries serving in his administration that they are in those positions because of sacrifices of the zambian people.

The President says it is important for government officials to be selfless in the discharge of their duties so as to respect and honour the hard work and sacrifices of others who might not have had the opportunity to serve in government.

Mr Hichilema was speaking at the Natala family Ranch in Lubombo area of Mazabuka district Southern Province at the first memorial service of the late prominent farmer and member of the UPND presidential campaign team, Gladstone Natala who passed away last year on June 30th at the height of the Pandemic.

“Let me now address the party (UPND) and government officials. How often do we forget that you are in those positions because of sacrifices of others such as the late Mr. Natala? The freedom struggle would not have been won if these people did not do their part,” President Hichilema reminded.

Mr. Hichilema who described the late Mr. Natala as a hardworking and fearless party mobilizer, advised those that have remained to always work for the good of the people.

The President has committed himself to attend to memorial services for former party officials and others who once served in government.

“Yes, I have heard about many who died and I pledge to attend their memorial services,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Family spokesperson, Costern Chilala urged the Head of State to address the injustices suffered by some ethnic grouping at the hands of the former ruling party, some of whom lost jobs and business contracts simply because of their tribal belonging.

Mr. Chilala however thanked the President for his tireless effort to reunite the country without ethnic considerations.

And Southern Province Minister, Cornelius Mweetwa remembers the late Mr. Natala as a selfless man who contributed much to the growth of the UPND as a Party.

The President is in Southern Province for various engagements and is tomorrow expected to grace the Lwiindi Gonde traditional ceremony in Monze district.

Leave James Ndambo Out Of Hostels Issue, UNZA Told

LEAVE NDAMBO OUT OF HOSTELS ISSUE,UNZA TOLD

SATURNIA REGNA TO BUILD UNZA STUDENT COMPLEX

Saturnia Regna Pension Fund has embarked on a project to construct a modern 100-room hostel to provide affordable accommodation to University of Zambia (UNZA) students.

The investment will provide alternative accommodation to students after the fund recognised a shortage of bed spaces at the university.

“It is a fitting irony that funds grown for existing working members and designed to provide security for members as they approach the end of their working lives will be put to use to provide facilities for the next generation of employees,” said Saturnia Regna Board of Trustees Chairperson Collins M Hamusonde.

The facility in Lusaka’s Jesmondine area, opposite the UNZA main campus, will include a cafeteria, gymnasium, and a mini soccer pitch. There will be staff dedicated to the facility for a wider range of services, including rental collection, maintenance, and security.

Construction is set to commence this month and is expected to be completed in 2024 and will be financed by the pension fund, which manages more than K3 billion in assets on behalf of its members.

“UNZA has over 30,000 students of which only 5,000 are fully accommodated within the university premises. The remaining students are left to find alternative accommodation in communities around the campus,” explained Michelo Hambayi, Lead Manager – Property Development and Operations of Saturnia’s fund manager African Life Financial Services (AfLife).

“Unfortunately, most of the available spaces are not suitable for students as most of the property was built for different uses,” he added.

The project will be overseen by AfLife, which offers property management and development services to Saturnia’s property portfolio.
Mr Hambayi explained that the facility would be constructed in a way that provided a conducive environment for students during their period of study.

The project falls within Saturnia’s medium-to-long-term property portfolio re-alignment agenda that seeks to divert value from underperforming investments to higher returning investment platforms such as the accommodation facility, which would earn more for the pension fund’s members.

Mr Hambayi went on to say the property would also be available to students from other institutions of higher learning should they find it a suitable accommodation option.

Understanding Inflation Trends In Zambia: Very Important- Peter Sinkamba

By Peter Sinkamba

UNDERSTANDING INFLATION TRENDS IN ZAMBIA: VERY IMPORTANT

Inflation in Zambia, and pretty everywhere in the world follows a particular trend or pattern over a period of time. In Zambia, the trend has been that there is spike during periods of elections and political uncertainty. After elections and periods of uncertainty are diffused, inflation rate always reverts to below single digits.

For example, in the last 20 years, there was a spike run-up to the 2006 elections reaching almost 20%. Shortly after elections, the inflation rate reduced to about 7%. In 2008, there was a spike that climaxed at about 17% due to the election occasioned by the sudden death of President Levy Mwanawasa but reduced to about 10% within three months after the election.

Concerning the 2011 elections, the spike was marginal. A number of factors could be attributed for the marginal increase. First, the late President Ruphia Banda brought about some semblance of political stability. Campaigns were largely free and fair. Secondly, regime change did not appear certain. Perhaps, this explains why the late President sobbed when handing over power to the late President Michael Sata.

With regard to the 2016 elections, the spike was very high, rising from around 7% in 2015 to about 24% in 2016. With 10 months, the inflation rate reduced to around 6%.

As for the 2021 elections, the spike was highest reaching almost 25% around election time. Within 10 months, the rate has reduced to around 9%.

On one hand, the main reason for spikes is adoption process where aspiring candidates spend lots of money to find their names on the ballot papers. And they spend more money on campaign materials and campaign programmes to find themselves in council chambers, parliament and State House. On the other hand, the spike is generated by Government expending colossal sums of money on election preparations and holding of elections. The inflation spikes by and large last between 5 to 10 months as is shown in the figure below.

Speech By The My Home Town Patron, Hon. Dora Siliya At My Home Town Pageant

SPEECH BY THE MHT PATRON, HON. DORA SILIYA AT MHT PAGEANT

2nd July, 2022.

The Chairman of MHT and Madame,
Special Invited Guests of MHT,
The Board of MHT and the MD,
Members of MHT,
The MHT Beauty Pageant participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen.

Tonight is a momentous occasion! It is a culmination of a long journey, going back over 30 years ago when My Home Town (MHT) Founder, Mr James Ndambo, realised that the words of Mahatma Ghandi rang true: we have to make the change we want to see in our families, communities, towns, countries and the world. He began to support family members so that he was not the only one reaching for the sky today. Over the years, this support has been extended to many other people including many of us in this room tonight. Someone once said, you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.

After years of an idea in practice, in 2009, Chairman James Ndambo formalised the MHT organisation. Like many of us, he has travelled the world and met many important people. He is also successful by any standard. However, he realised very quickly that one is not an island and that our life is connected to all the people we have met along the way, who end up connecting us to even people we have never met. This is the reason we are all here tonight and so beautifully dressed. I said earlier, you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.
For the many who have met the Chairman, Mr Ndambo, we have learnt the following:
Small talk does not get big things done.
Strength is not whom you beat down but whom you lift up.

Kindness is more attractive than being cruel.
People will never stop talking, soar and leave them behind.

And that smiling is free.

Chairman Ndambo began MHT as a platform to initially connect with family members. Later, it was expanded as an initiative of like minds interested in business mentoring and wealth creation. Mr Ndambo believes that each one of us has to explore and exploit every business opportunity.

His view is that, this is the only way people will be less dependent and assist the government and country to develop and enhance the quality of life of citizens.

Since MHT inception, the business network has grown through Africa, UK, USA, Europe, Dubai and Latin America. You really can’t stop an idea whose time has come. On behalf of MHT and as Patron, we thank all those who took it upon themselves to spread MHT to the many countries in the world, especially Mr Ndambo’s family members.

One of the core objectives of MHT is to grow local businesses. This is why, we are all in Choma tonight. These business supporting activities have been held in different parts of the country, such as in 2020 when similar events were held on the Copper belt, Eastern and Lusaka Provinces. The main aim is to ignite money circulation through procurement of goods and services by local residents and visitors, who are you and I, in all our home towns, which translates into the whole of Zambia.
This initiative has become even more urgent post pandemic when many of us lost loved ones and businesses. And we all realised we cannot depend on anyone even in the tourism sector, except on ourselves as Zambians.
In the last week, there have been a flurry of activities in Choma and extending as far as Livingstone.

We have all come to MHT Choma, to attend the second MHT beauty show, but more importantly we have also come to support the businesses in Choma. You will recall that the first MHT beauty show was in 2011. However, we were taken aback with negativity that come from some corners at that time. Clearly, they were just ignorant about our organisation. Nevertheless, the show was successful and winner of that beauty pageant, Nandi Nkowani, has flown in from Europe where she now resides. Indeed you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.

The work of MHT is anchored on the big belief that first, you can’t share poverty and secondly that wealth creation must always involve a process of supporting the community, our home towns. We are aware that there are various NGOS doing various activities. However, MHT found its niche in supporting initiatives that unlock human potential so that we are better off than when we began. Over the years, MHT has supported business ideas with great commercial value, thereby standing in the gap for missing investment funds. Travel to other countries such as Dubai in 2021, to interact with business over there, has also been an MHT trademark aimed at exposing our Members to international business ideas and standards.

MHT is always looking out for exceptional students who have been supported to universities, both locally and abroad. The Chairman and all of us at MHT believe that it is better to teach a man how to fish than to feed him. I have personally been a beneficiary of some of this student support in the 90s, while I was studying at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

In the medical field, a number of Zambians have been supported with health care, especially in India, where we currently have patients in Kerela. You truly, cannot stop an idea whose time has come.
Recently, lot of people have been asking me about who Mr James Ndambo is. Who is he indeed?

He is Zambian born, a South African citizen and a very progressive African. He is an accomplished businessman. He is a global citizen and a champion of building bridges across every difference. And I have witnessed this first hand. They also ask me, what is MHT? Simply, it is exactly as in the words of President Kennedy: it is not what the country can do for you, but what can you do for your country.

Each one of us has the capacity to do something: to create wealth, jobs, to support our schools, clinics, churches, orphanages, youth groups etc. It just takes one person with an idea.

As the French poet, Victor Hugo said, you cannot stop an idea whose time has come. MHT is an idea that is worth trying wherever your home town maybe.

Thank you for joining us tonight.

Thankyou our viewers.

UPND will deliver, God is with us – Nalumango

UPND will deliver, God is with us – Nalumango

By Kombe Mataka

VICE-PRESIDENT Mutale Nalumango says the UPND will deliver on all its promises because God is with it.
During the Vice-President’s Question Time in the House yesterday, Nakonde PF member of parliament Lukas Simumba asked if the UPND would apologise to Zambians for not fulfilling its many campaign promises so that citizens are made aware that the said promises would never be fulfilled.

Simumba cited failure by the government to reduce the price of mealie meal to K50 and fertiliser to K250 and failure to sell the presidential jet (Gulfstream), which was among the many party’s campaign promises.

In response, Vice-President Nalumango said there was no need for the government to apologise because it was going to deliver on all its promises.

“All the promises are going to be fulfilled. We are nine months in office and you have seen some of the promises. We did not promise that everything will be done at once but surely there is stability even in the pricing. There is some stability there. You are talking of presidential jet? Wait. Nobody comes and says ‘now let it go’. Just hear us, that is a fact. Whatever we promised shall come to pass because God is with us. Now we are planning, this is the truth. It doesn’t matter how you feel about it. This is the truth,” she said. “The promises shall be fulfilled. That is truth. And apologise for
what? For free education we should apologise? We should apologise for decentralising? We should apologise for recruiting teachers? We should apologise for going to do Census (of population)? All those things need money and we have managed in months. It will happen.

Zambians should not listen to some friends who want to pretend that they have a way out. Why didn’t they provide the way out just a few months ago? ”

And leader of the opposition in the House Brian Mundubile said President Hakainde Hichilema had made several trips since assuming office which had raised concern among Zambians. Mundubile, who is Mporokoso PF member of parliament, recalled that President Hichilema, while in opposition, condemned his predecessor Edgar Lungu whom he nicknamed kamwendo munjila (a man ever on the move).

Mundubile noted that among the trips that President Hichilema was making
abroad, China was not one of them, a matter which he thought was urgent and an essential trip in the government’s bid to restructure its debt and secure an IMF bailout package.

He said China was Zambia’s biggest creditor.

In response, Vice-President Nalumango said Mundubile had raised too many things.

“Trying to impress who? You know the
President and this government realises the importance of China. This government has not looked down on China. We do appreciate and the President appreciates. Let me tell you that nowadays, you can be in China without flying. President Hakainde has had a talk with the
President of China [Xi Jinping],” she said. “It is among the many priorities. This is the truth and you don’t just stand and say ‘I am visiting here and there’. That is the truth. The President had a chat with the President of China. They had a very sincere talk and the Chinese, I know they, realise who we are and who you are.”

Vice-President Nalumango said the government was cognizant of China’s role in its ongoing discussions for debt restructuring.
“The honourable must know that indeed after the chat, and the interaction at different levels with the President, the Chinese arrived on board to work together with other creditors to find a solution for Zambia. They are not left off board. This is human knowledge. It was in the media. Remember Chinese even pleaded for us
that ‘support Zambia’.

How can the honourable say that…?” she asked. “Do you think they are doing that on their own? There is engagement between Zambia and China, between the President of Zambia and the President of China. So it is among the many priorities because of the status of the economy. The President is working hard.”
On the President’s travels, Vice-President Nalumango said members of parliaments should
see benefits of the trips.

“Zambian foreign policy of 2014 is anchored on economic diplomacy which aims to address the development needs of the country and various regional and global challenges with a view of maximising Zambia’s economic interests. This is achieved through international cooperation using channels such as bilateral and multilateral engagements to leverage the benefits that accrue to the country. I wish to highlight Madam that having been elected into office, under a year ago, the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr Hakainde Hichilema has undertaken various trips which have accrued the following benefits to the country…” she said before the members of parliament said she was taking long to respond to Mundubile’s question.

But in providing guidance, Speaker Nelly Mutti told members of parliament that the question by the Mundubile was equally long and the Vice-President needed to give a detailed response.

On retaking the floor, Vice-President Nalumango said, “Maybe we need yes or no because when people ask…the question started with the trips. The concern of the honourable was about the presidential trips. So I have to explain that otherwise the people there will wonder and believe the statement that the honourable has made.”

“The honourable talked of increase in
fuel prices so all those things are things that you tell the public. You want us to just swallow? I will answer the question as you have asked. I have to explain, have we gotten any benefits? It is not
kamwendo mu njila to go and dance…” said Vice-President Nalumango.

UNZA don, Austin Mbozi defends himself from aexual allegations

UNIVERSITY of Zambia lecturer Austin Mbozi has denied molesting a 20-year-old student before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court.

Mbozi, who admitted offering the student employment, explained that he pitied her and only wanted to advance her in education as she was desperate for an international scholarship and he feared that it would cause her trouble.

This is in a matter where Mbozi is charged with indecent assault on females.

It is alleged that Mbozi, 52, on September 28, 2020 unlawfully and indecently assaulted a 20-year-old student.

According to her testimony, the victim said Mbozi fondled her waist, breasts and thighs after he tricked her that he would offer her a contract as a typist in his office.

Opening his defence before magistrate Felix Kaoma, Mbozi narrated that on the material day he went to Goma football pitch to check on his son Wankumbu Mbozi who plays football at the same pitch around 16:00 hours and that it is when he ran into the victim.

“Our eyes met accidentally with the victim; we accidentally bumped into each other, we said hi. She seemed to be looking like someone is calling. I asked her that; ‘you seem to be looking for somebody’ and she said she had come to see a friend. She added that she lives in Kalingalinga,” Mbozi narrated. “I told her, ‘since you come from Kalingalinga, help me look for someone who might want part time work to sell a book (Language politics in Zambia) which I published in 2018 and run a soccer academy for kids’. She said me I can work. I said if you are the one who wants to work let’s go, I show you my office and we walked to the office with her. The office is at education department in room no. 106.”

Mbozi said when they got to this office there were distance students waiting for him.

He said because of the waiting students he rescheduled his meeting with the alleged victim and told her to see him on another day so that they could discuss the contract.

“She said, ‘ah, instead of me (victim) coming another day, I will come later on; I am going to see my friend’. We exchanged numbers and I told her I will call you when I finish. When my distance students left before 17:00 hours I told her to come,” Mbozi said further. “When she came to my office she wanted to sit on my colleague’s chair but I stopped her and she sat on a stool next to me. I asked her how far she went in school and she said up to grade 12. I gave her a piece of paper and told her to write her grade 12 results. The results appeared to be average; they were good. I asked her why she wasn’t going to college or university and want a job like this one, and she said she did not apply because she wouldn’t get a scholarship because there were people who had better results than her.”

Mbozi said he was satisfied that the 20-year-old was qualified for the job at his company, Unmas Sports Academy, and assured her that she would get a better job as he would recommend her to other companies.

He said he asked the victim if she was computer literate and she confirmed and started operating his computer. Later she shoved his chair and the student moved her chair close to his.

“I said open YouTube and open Soccer Excellence Academy because they do things like what we do. She said let me show you where I have been applying for scholarships. She had so many adverts about international scholarships, I started sympathising with her and told her to go to embassies instead because I feared she would get in danger,” Mbozi explained. “Since she was desperate for a school, I told her we would sign a contract and I would pay her K2,000 on a condition that she would report for work everyday and she would apply for a scholarship under distance at UNZA. I told her by condition 1,000 I give you and the other thousand I pay to the university. I thought it was going to be easier because I work there.”

He said he suggested that the victim’s parents or guardians sign the contract so that he could sue any of the parties, in an event that she breached it after he sponsored her education.

“I showed her the same contract with a previous worker though it didn’t work out. At that point we concluded our conversation, she said she wanted to go and consult her guardians. On September 30, 2020 I received a call from UNZA security that I should go and see them there. I asked why and they said ‘you had complained that your son lost a ball’, I assured them I would go there when I have time,” Mbozi said. “I didn’t go there because I didn’t see it as a matter of urgency and after a week, two security people came to my office saying the chief security officer wanted to see me. I told them they were making me uncomfortable because he is the one who was looking for me in 2018 when I was accused of insulting former president Edgar Lungu and the police were investigating the matter, so I was suspicious of that man. I said we follow protocol if it’s to do with UNZA because they were not my bosses. By that time, I didn’t know he was a police officer. I showed them my supervisor’s office and they left.”

Mbozi said on October 9, 2020 at 8:00 hours, chief security officer Bwalya Kalebaila, Steven Mumba a police officer, and a junior officer banged in his office and requested that he accompanied them to their office for reasons that he was accused of sexual harassment.

Mbozi said he noticed that Mumba had handcuffs and asked him if he was a police officer.

He said Mumba confirmed being a police officer and that later prompted Mbozi not to respond to his questions because he could not deal with the police without his lawyer.

He said Kalebai threatened him that he would be fired if he did not cooperate.

“I told them the person (victim) was not a student and provoked the officer for saying I would be fired when he was just a guard. Steven Mumba handcuffed me and drove me to Chudleigh police post. I gave him a note to give my wife but he didn’t. The officer in charge said there was no record for my detention and the police post was not a normal holding cell and I was taken to Chelstone police station,” said Mbozi. “There was no kind of touching, no one touched her. I didn’t touch her (victim), I didn’t lock the door. It is an automatic door; it locks itself, you don’t need a key when you are inside. That lady, I felt sorry for her, I wanted to help her.”

Barbara Banda’s Ejection: The FAZ Medical Committee Is Moribund

Some nine or seven months ago, CAF communicated to FAZ advising of Barbara Banda’s medical situation insofar as participation in the women’s national team is concerned.

Ideally, this situation should have been subjected to the FAZ medical committee led by Dr. Joseph Mulenga.

Barbara and any other player presenting borderline or excess testosterone levels would have been subjected to some strict therapy to regulate the hormonal imbalance, of course with their consent.

An endocrinologist (a physician specialized in the study of hormones) could have been engaged in addition to a nutritionist and a psychologist.

Barbara is the Kalusha Bwalya of the women’s team but we watched her roam the streets without recourse. I am informed the FAZ medical committee has never met since it was constituted 12 months ago. The committee reports to the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee has met 10 to 12 times during this period. Did they not notice that one of their critical committees was moribund?

Dr Joseph Mulenga is head of the moribund medical committee and is deputized by FAZ ExCo member Mr. Francis Hafwiti. Other members of the committee are Dr. Masiku Phiri, Dr. Kevin Zimba, Dr. Kelvin Sinkala, Dr. Gabriel Mpundu and Dr. Chishimba.

Anyway, let us allow the women to focus on tonight’s match against Cameroon.

You may wish to know that before Barbara was ejected, I was weighing in on reports surrounding the women’s national team.

In order not to give some of my self-appointed opposition commentators a platform, I opted to keep away.

But I wanted to mention that the other problem which I am reliably informed is rampant in the team relates to the behavior of male coaches. They have not represented us well. The situation almost spiraled out of control at the Olympics in Japan.

As a patriotic Zambian, I will discuss the details of this information after the Women’s Africa Cup in Morocco so that I deter suggestions that the aim of my article is to destabilize our girls’ participation in the tournament. I want us to allow the team to focus on the task at hand.

The entire FAZ Executive Committee has full knowledge of this subject so do most sports journalists.

It’s difficult to fathom that people priding themselves as leaders of our football have been walking with their heads high when such disturbing and verifiable information is circulating from team members.

We can’t all be complicit to this misnomer.

Any way, good day folks and best wishes to the Copper Queens! Happy Sunday!

Denmark shooting: Gunman kills several people in Copenhagen mall

0

Several people have been killed and injured in a shooting at a shopping mall in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen, Danish police say.

The suspected gunman, who is in custody, is a 22-year-old Danish man who was detained near the Fields shopping mall, police inspector Soren Thomassen, who is the head of the Copenhagen police operations unit, said on Sunday, July 3.

The shopping centre is on the outskirts of Copenhagen, just across from a subway line that connects the city centre with the international airport. A major highway also runs adjacent to Field’s.

“There are several injured, and what we also know now is that there are several dead,” Thomassen told a news conference, adding that a motive of “terrorism” cannot be ruled out.

“We do not have information that others are involved. This is what we know now,” he said.

Police said they were first notified about an ongoing shooting at 5:36 pm local time (15:36 GMT).

Local Danish media published images showing heavily armed police officers at the scene, as well as people running out of the mall looking terrified

Laurits Hermansen told Danish broadcaster DR that he was in a clothing store at the shopping centre with his family when he heard “three-four bangs. Really loud bangs. It sounded like the shots were being fired just next to the store”.

UK singer Harry Styles was due to perform at 8pm on Sunday at a concert venue less than a mile (1.6km) from the mall.

The concert promoter Live Nation said the concert will go ahead as scheduled after close dialogue with the police, and half of the audience has already entered the venue.

On Snapchat, Styles wrote ”My team and I pray for everyone involved in the Copenhagen shopping mall shooting. I am shocked. Love H.”

Shortly after the shooting, the royal palace said a reception with Crown Prince Frederik connected to the Tour de France cycling race had been cancelled. The first three stages of the race were held in Denmark this year, the palace said in a statement.

Police Motorised Escorts: Who Is Entitled?

POLICE MOTORISED ESCORTS: WHO IS ENTITLED?

IN 2008, a debate ensued whether a minister or a private citizens could be accorded a motorised police escort outside the President and the Vice-president of the Republic of Zambia.

This was after media reports that some ministers had been using motorised police escorts emerged and sparked a public e debate in 2008

History seems it is cheeky in repeating itself and 14 years later, the debate has repeated itself now on a private citizen.

The then Chief Government spokesperson late Kennedy Sakeni guided as follows:

The people entitled to motorised police escorts are the President and Vice President and [foreign signatories]

All ministers are not entitled and this can be traced from the independence days to date but it sometimes happens especially for the Defence and Home Affairs ministers when need arises*

That motorised escorts are only exclusive to the Republican President and Vice-President, while ministers can access the privilege in some circumstances when ministers sometimes request for escorts, in view of their tight schedules. That any minister can ask and police can help to rush them through traffic.

A motorised escort is a convoy of motor vehicles carrying very important persons and security personnel

That It was normal once in a while for a minister to be escorted but not on a permanent basis. It is simply an administrative matter and it should not be connected to anything.

However, the people entitled to motorised escorts are the President and Vice President, but it sometimes happens especially for the Defence and Home Affairs ministers when need arises.

That any minister can however also make arrangements for motorised escort, with the Inspector General of Police depending on the urgency of the trip.

That motorised escorts also apply to ordinary citizens during funeral processions.

Motorised escorts happens at the discretion of the Inspector General of Police and depending on the urgency of the matter, just like in some cases of funerals.

With this guidance, we can not dissect this public debate whether the motorised escort accorded the private individual recently was in order or not going by the rules of the game.

It Is Important For Zambia To Have Its Own Millionaires- Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

By Dr Lubinda Haabazoka

I hope now you understand why you need to make your own Zambians rich. When your Zambian citizens are rich, they concentrate on their own country! They bank their money in Zambia and donate in Zambia.

Just like Ndambo we have the GBMs, the Milupis, the Sikutwa’s, we had the Kavindeles, the Matanis and many others I don’t want to mention in order to insulate them from petty jealous. These are the people we need to concentrate on. We need to ensure that they become more rich so that we create generational wealth that will help build Zambia. We also need to concentrate on upcoming entrepreneurs and Zambians. Nurture them into becoming solid business people.

At the moment even government policy distracts wealth creation. The many taxes, fees and other charges you need to pay as a business is too much! The corporate income tax for small businesses is just too high! If we are serious, we can reduce income tax for companies with a turnover of less than a million dollars to 10%!

Let us concentrate on speaking about wealth creation rather than politics! If we are so passionate about fighting corruption with so many institutions created for the same, why can’t we be so passionate about fighting poverty and wealth creation? Why can’t we have the Anti poverty commission of Zambia? The Wealth Creation Commission of Zambia alongside the current CEEC?

We are so obsessed with destroying rather than building! The best way to fight poverty and corruption is to make things available and easy for citizens! Maybe people get corrupt because they can’t get things genuinely coz of stiff foreign competition? Let’s make it easy for everyone to tender! Zambians can provide services to government but when you look at tender documents, they can be 500 pages!!! In the absence of resources no one will bid or people will be forced to do shortcuts! Let’s make things easy for everyone! If everything is done online and with no queues, you remove corruption!

For me I don’t care who becomes rich. Tonga, Bemba, Lamba, PF, UPND or Socialist. If they are Zambian, let them be rich. In times that the country needs help, these are the people that will step in. So government should not shy away from empowering its people! A Zambian is a Zambian! Even if it’s carders they empower it’s ok! Those carders are Zambians and it means less burden on Zambian coffers when citizens becomes economically independent!

So now if we had harnessed wealth among Zambians, these tuma KCM would have been running under Zambian ownership. Deliberately creating wealth amongst citizens is very important! What is wrong is when only a few are eating while the rest are just watching on TV!

I receive a lot of queries from people asking me to connect them with anyone who can help them. Zambians are ready to work. All they lack in most cases is capital and a bit of skills on how to run businesses!

I would rather we hold business trainings in constituencies and wards! Now government says that they will be giving out CDF as seed capital. How many cooperatives are being trained in tuning businesses? Let’s not assume that one can just wake up and run a business! Business can be difficult especially is run by people in a cooperative who have come together not because it was their own idea but it is a condition to get money.

Let’s have mature discourse without emotions. Less on the talk and more on the actions! Even a Ndambo beauty pageant sure has to be political? This democracy has become a curse to this country! No wonder Kaunda scrapped it!!! Bushe when are we going to be serious aii???

One day Zambia will be tired of us and tell us to leave it for a bit because our behaviour does not add up!!!!

Enjoy your Sunday

Don’t Be Intimidated But Play Catch Up And Balance Up

DON’T BE INTIMIDATED BUT PLAY CATCH UP AND BALANCE UP

By Koswe Editors
We have noted a few PF bitter losers not being happy with some Zambian citizens who have been asked to serve Zambia to the best of their abilities.

Ten (10) months ago, these Zambians could not walk with their heads up because they were being called cows and that they were all UPND when in fact not. Thanks to Koswe and all normal Zambians who stood up and voted out the corrupt PF thieves who nearly plunged this country into chaos and made people who intermarried start worrying about their conjugal rights.

Koswe hates tribalism and this is why we keep exposing it’s ugly tail whenever we see it as we saw it during PF.

Ask around and hear how the Bantu-Botatwe speaking people could be ridiculed in these government offices including in the streets mainly because bitter tribalist and merchant of hatred Fred Namakando M’membe together with his PF had branded these Zambians as such.

Just take a look at this list below and see how PF was running government but under Hakainde Hichilema, this is not the case.

If the Head of government Body is from a marginalised region, then the deputy is from the self acclaimed powerful region. This is meant to unite the country which Edgar and his fellow losers divided.

If anything, the Zambians being accused of being given opportunities now, deserve even better but Hakainde has made it clear that he is a President for all Zambians and anyone who commits a crime, then gets jailed on their own.

Why is it that these PF bitter losers and tribalists don’t complain when RTSA, ZRA and several other Ministries have Zambians from the same regions are theirs but it is an issue when someone from another is given an opportunity?

This country belongs to all Zambians and all Zambians deserve to work in government and not a select few.

PF had destroyed this country. Go in these public offices and hear how PF losers are bitter and how they have continued humiliating fellow Zambians. You cannot like it. Not even Koswe.

In fact, Zambia was fast stopping to use English as its official language as one and only that PF preferred language was being used and should they hear you use another language, conclusions were that you are a UPND cadre. These monsters destroyed homes. They destroyed relationships but thank God, the youths said NO, to their (PF) nonsense.

So, there is nothing wrong to appoint fellow Zambians into these jobs especially that they are playing catch up with the PF nonsense. As the case is now. In terms of balancing by scale ⚖️. It is four (4) directors against one (1) and the four are PF and picked by PF using their tribal lenses and 1 is from the other parts of Zambia. This ratio must be broken to a level where all the five (5) should at least be drawn from 5 different regions or provinces and we hope that these people in these places will see this as they follow HH’S vision of uniting and equating everyone.

PF bitter losers must be ashamed that during their time, the only qualification for a promotion or getting a government contract was by being a PF thug or from one or two regions only. Be ashamed and even you who PF left in these offices, be ashamed that you couldn’t and you continue not to embrace other regions except yourselves.

Just like Jonas Shakafuswa says: This is not your mother’s country alone but all Zambians and anyone given an opportunity to work for the country must be allowed to do so because Hakainde Hichilema said that the first qualification is being Zambian and not Tanzanian like Emmanuel Mwamba whose true surname is Muamba.

State House summoned Chushi Kasanda, demanding that she exculpates herself over Cabinet revolt leak- Lusaka Times

Information and Media Minister Chushi Kasanda was on Thursday summoned to State House and accused of leaking information over some Cabinet Ministers planning to resign.

On Wednesday, Lusaka Times exclusively revealed that several Cabinet Ministers are unhappy with President Hichilema’s style of running government affairs and were planning to quit.

The Ministers who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that President Hichilema is micromanaging all aspects of government including appointments to parastatal boards and foreign service even for junior roles such as Press Attaché.

The exposé infuriated State House prompting an investigation on who could have leaked the information.

The investigation narrowed down to Ms. Kasanda as the female Minister who was referred to in the article.

Ms. Kasanda was then summoned by President Hakainde Hichilema Principal Private Secretary Bradford Machila who expressed displeasure over the story.

Mr. Machila directed that Ms. Kasanda exculpates herself over the allegations that she is the Minister who leaked the story.

He also directed her to issue a statement refuting the story.

Highly placed sources within State House revealed that Ms. Kasanda arrived at State House on Thursday around 11:00 Hours and went to meet Mr. Machila in his office for over an hour.

The source have since challenged Mr. Machila to deny if he did not meet Ms. Kasanda on Thursday and publicly deny directing her to exculpate herself and refute the story.

“The story caused a lot of anxiety within here (State House) leading to Brad(Bradford Machila) summoning Chushi (Ms. Kasanda). They believe she is the one who spoke to Lusaka Times and she was really told off. Brad asked her to exculpate herself and told her to issue a statement refuting the story,” the source said.

“What made them believe it was Chushi is because of the link to her gender and the fact that the Ministers who complained mentioned the issue of Press Attaché especially that she has confronted Boss (President Hichilema) over those appointments, so it was easier for Brad to conclude that it was Chushi when Infact Cabinet has four female Ministers and most of them are not happy serving there,” the source added.

On Friday, Ms. Kasanda at a press briefing refuted the story that several Ministers are unhappy with President Hichilema and are planning to resign.

She stated that Cabinet is united and that there is noting wrong with a leader micromanaging affairs as long as results are showing.- Lusaka Times

We Must Aspire To Practice Patriotism And Responsible Use Of Media At All Times- Thabo Kawana

Thabo Kawana writes

WE MUST ASPIRE TO PRACTICE PATRIOTISM AND RESPONSIBLE USE OF MEDIA AT ALL TIMES.

Watching the live broadcast of Miss My Home Town held in Choma last night into early morning, I noticed two things that caught my attention and took me aback.

In his speech, My Home Town Chairperson Mr James Ndambo made reference to two aspects.

One: That the Zambian Government fired four nurses for twerking, that is unfactual and far from the truth. The fact is that the said nurses were student nurses who where expelled by their institution for posting a video of themselves twerking on social media but got reinstated immediately at the intervention of the Minister.

Two: The Chairperson then said he would pay the said nurses and sponsor them to a country where people are free since in Zambia, we are not free. It is a no brainer that Zambians are now more free to speak, criticize, protest and democratically participate in the Governance of their country under this New Dawn Administration.

Now, this is rather unfortunate, unfounded and a pure misrepresentation of our beautiful country. The impression given by those unfortunate remarks painted our country black to millions of viewers across the world that where watching. The impression given was that our Nurses are playful at work and engage in activities such as twerking and that our Government is so inhumane that they fired nurses for such and also that there is no freedom in our country hence repatriating our citizens to other countries that practice freedom as we don’t.

It is wrong for those of our citizens leaving in diaspora and have renounced their citizenship to this country to state such especially without tested truth or fact.

It is therefore incumbent upon all of us as citizens of our country including those that have renounced their citizenship to practice patriotism and responsible use of media by desisting from bringing our country’s reputation into disrepute unfairly and unnecessarily so.

It will be good for the Organization, My Home Town to apologize and retract the sentiments expressed by their Chairperson and set the record straight.

The essence of the “My Home Town” concept is to promote our home towns hence our country and not misrepresent our Nation.

THERE’S BREATH OF FRESH AIR… let us guard and protect our unity in diversity- Vernon Mwaanga

THERE’S BREATH OF FRESH AIR

…let us guard and protect our unity in diversity

By Fanny Kalonda

FREEDOM fighter Vernon Mwaanga says there is now a breath of fresh air in the nation after a change of government in August last year.

In his message ahead of the Heroes and Unity days which fall on July 4 and 5, Mwaanga who is also a veteran politician emphasised unity, adding that the country should no longer be divided as it was under the PF.

‘’Unity in Diversity is an important ingredient as we continue to build Zambia in unity. There is now a breath of fresh air in the country, at markets, bus stations and others, where party cadres reigned supreme. We also went through a dark period, when some of our citizens lost their jobs in the public service, purely on account of where they came from,’’ he said in a statement.

“This grossly undermined our national motto of One Zambia One Nation, which has kept our 73 ethnic groups at peace with one another since independence. We have regrettably had a few narrow-minded politicians at different levels, who have been demeaning other ethnic groups, using very unpalatable language, and to my shock, no disciplinary action was taken against them by their leaders.’’

Mwaanga gave accolades to founding fathers and mothers, and urged the nation to uphold unity in diversity.

‘’As for unity, we should thank our founding fathers and mothers for their foresight and for coming up with our national motto of ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION, which prior to 2011, was being observed religiously. Presidential appointments and others, were representative of the Zambia we want to see,’’ Mwaanga added.

“Thankfully, the 12th August, 2021 tripartite elections, clearly showed that President Hakainde Hichilema, was elected nationally and not regionally as was being alleged by some of his critics and opponents. He also appointed a government which represented the diversity of our country, in some cases at the expense [of] performance.’’

He explained how Zambia’s unity has made citizens unanimously reject corruption and other vices through the vote.

He also reminded the new dawn government never to let the people down after receiving an overwhelming mandate.

‘’Our unity has kept our country together since independence. Our people live side by side in peace and inter-marriages have become the norm. The overwhelming national mandate given to President Hakainde Hichilema last year, was intended to change what then existed and bring about sanity, peace and more particularly, economic growth, which would consequently create jobs for young people. The people of Zambia through their vote last year said no to corruption, no to cadreism, no to ethnic discrimination, no to non-performance and incompetence and yes to One Zambia One Nation,’’ he said further.

“Let us all work together to develop our country, guard and protect our unity in diversity and bequeath it to generations yet unborn. The new dawn government should not let down the people who placed so much faith and trust in them.’’

And Mwaanga called on Zambians to record their country’s history instead of recording that of other countries.

‘’In a few days’ time, we shall be honouring our heroes and our unity. This should be a time for reflection. Have we done enough to honour our heroes? We have men, women and youth who sacrificed so much for Zambia to be free. We have other Zambians in different fields who have become heroes by virtue of what they have achieved in their respective areas’ specialization,’’ said Mwaanga.

“My main concern is that we have done little or nothing to record the history of our struggle for independence. The younger generation has no idea as to what happened and what their peers went through. Students at our schools, colleges and universities don’t learn about this, because it is not part of the syllabus. They learn more about the American War of independence, the French Revolution and so on. We should correct this situation.’’

Death row inmate asks for execution delay so he can donate kidney

Death row inmate asks for execution delay so he can donate kidney
An American prisoner whose execution was scheduled to take place in less than two weeks requested that it be postponed so that he may donate a kidney.

Ramiro Gonzales will be put to death by lethal injection on July 13 for the 2001 shooting death of Bridget Townsend, an 18-year-old from southwest Texas, whose remains were discovered over two years later.

Thea Posel and Raoul Schonemann, Gonzales’ attorneys, requested a 30-day pardon from Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in a letter so that the prisoner might be considered a living donor “to someone who is in urgent need of a kidney transplant.”

His attorneys also made a separate request to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles for a 180-day reprieve related to the kidney donation.

In their request to Abbott, Gonzales’ attorneys included a letter from Cantor Michael Zoosman, an ordained Jewish clergyman from Maryland who has been corresponding with Gonzales.

Death row inmate asks for execution delay so he can donate kidney
“There has been no doubt in my mind that Ramiro’s desire to be an altruistic kidney donor is not motivated by a last-minute attempt to stop or delay his execution. I will go to my grave believing in my heart that this is something that Ramiro wants to do to help make his soul right with his God,” Zoosman wrote.

Gonzales’ attorneys say he’s been determined to be an “excellent candidate” for donation after being evaluated by the transplant team at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The evaluation found Gonzales has a rare blood type, meaning his donation could benefit someone who might have difficulty finding a match.

“Virtually all that remains is the surgery to remove Ramiro’s kidney. UTMB has confirmed that the procedure could be completed within a month,” Posel and Schonemann wrote to Abbott.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice policies allow inmates to make organ and tissue donations.

Agency spokeswoman Amanda Hernandez said Gonzales was deemed ineligible after making a request to be a donor earlier this year. She did not give a reason, but Gonzales’ lawyers said in their letter that the agency objected because of the pending execution date.

Gonzales’ attorneys also made a separate request asking the board to commute his death sentence to a lesser penalty.

They also asked that his execution not proceed if his spiritual adviser isn’t allowed to both hold his hand and place another hand on his heart during his execution.

A federal trial on the latter request was set to begin on Tuesday, July 5.

Gonzales, an inmaten with seventh-grade education, was convicted of fatally shooting 18-year-old Bridget Townsend when he was 18. Her remains were not found for two years.

Moment Russian Olympic ice hockey star is forcibly enlisted in Putin’s army and dragged off to fight in Ukraine days after signing $1.1m NHL deal in US (Videos)

Videos have emerged of the moment a Russian ice hockey star who signed a million-dollar contract with an American team was rounded up by Russian policemen and taken to an army enlistment office before he is sent to fight in the war in Ukraine.

According to Mail Online, Olympian Ivan Fedotov, 25, was reportedly rushed into Putin’s army after he was filmed being detained by a squad of officers outside an ice rink in St Petersburg on Friday, July 1.

The goalkeeper of the Russian hockey national team was taken away in an ambulance just as he left training at the arena.

It was gathered that Fedotov decided to sign to play for the NHL team the Philadelphia Flyers in order to escape being drafted to fight for his country.

The top goalie and Olympic silver medalist signed a deal worth $1.1million (£900,000) last month.

Fedotov was formerly with CSKA, a club in the capital with close ties to the Russian military. Its name translates to Central Sports Club of the Army.

News outlet Fontanka reported that he can now be sent to the Russian army rather than the US – but he could also be jailed for alleged draft dodging.

‘He has just been detained “for evading the army”,’ reported Russian journalist Dmitry Navosha.

Fedotov – who is 6ft 7 and one of the Russian and Chinese KHL league’s best players – ‘did not realise that [the USSR] is back’, he added.
