PETER SINKAMBA SAYS CALLS FOR CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS NOT WILL OF ZAMBIANS

Green Party President, Peter Sinkamba, says attempts by some UPND supporters to advocate for constitutional changes that could affect presidential term limits should not be mistaken for the will of the Zambian people.
Reacting to ongoing statements on constitutional reforms, Mr. Sinkamba says Zambia experienced similar resistance to political change during the struggle for the reintroduction of multi-party democracy, arguing that citizens should be allowed to freely express their views on the country’s constitutional direction.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Sinkamba says the fact that a political party may command a parliamentary majority does not necessarily mean that its position represents the wishes of the wider population, as it is ultimately the electorate that determines the country’s political direction.
Mr. Sinkamba maintains that regardless of any constitutional amendments Parliament may adopt, the people will eventually have the opportunity to determine Zambia’s political leadership through elections, urging that the electorate’s will should remain central to the country’s democratic process.
