as Chieftainess Kawaza describes Matebele as a hero who spearheaded development

The late Katete District Commissioner, Michael Matebele who died in a fatal car accident on Wednesday 16th March 2022 was this afternoon put to rest at Lusaka’s Memorial Park cemetery.

Speaking during burial, Special Assistant to the President for Political Affairs, Hon Levy Ngoma who represented President Hakainde Hichilema, described late Matebele as a great leader who wanted development for his district.

Mr Ngoma said President Hichilema was devastated with the loss of the DC and asked the bereaved family to look to God for strength during the trying moment.

Senior Chieftainess Kawaza of the Chewa speaking people in Sinda and Katete district has described Matebele as a hero who spearheaded development in the chiefdom.

“We worked very well with District Commissioner Matebele and within a short period of time he was able to visit a lot of traditional leaders to discuss the vision as espoused by the New Dawn government. If Mr Matebele was to be buried in Eastern Province, you would be surprised how much people loved him but because of distance a number of people couldn’t travel,” said Chieftainess Kawaza.

And Eastern province Minister Hon. Peter Phiri described the late DC as a hardworking civil servant who served his country diligently.

UPND Eastern Province chairman Johabi Mtonga says the province has lost a gallant leader whose major interest was to see Sinda develop into a powerful economic hub.

“Matebele was Lozi and us as Easterners, we were proud to show the world that Zambia is united beyond party lines. Matebele played a big role in the victory of UPND and I personally will greatly miss him because I relied on him,” said Mr Mtonga.

Speaking through a representative, the wife to Mr Matebele described him as loving husband who loved his family dearly.

In attendance was UPND Deputy Secretary General, Hon. Gertrude Imenda, Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata, Permanent Secretary for Special duties at Cabinet Office Patrick Mucheleka, Eastern Province Deputy Permanent secretary, Princess beauty Undi Phiri, UPND Chairperson for Communication Felix Ngoma, District Commissioners, Senior Government officials as well as other senior UPND party officials.
