President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has endorsed his son, Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, during a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) held this afternoon at State House Entebbe.
The development was announced by Kasambya County MP Daudi Kabanda, who serves as Executive Secretary in the Office of the National Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). In a post on his X account, Kabanda stated: “President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has endorsed General Muhoozi Kainerugaba Museveni at the Central Executive Committee meeting held at Entebbe State House this afternoon.”
Kabanda did not provide further details on the nature or scope of the endorsement, including whether it constitutes formal backing of Gen. Kainerugaba’s reported ambitions for the 2031 presidential election.
The announcement comes amid an ongoing PLU-led campaign to position Gen. Kainerugaba as Museveni’s successor. On September 1, 2026, Kabanda had publicly stated that the general intended to contest the 2031 election and that the president had promised support. Since then, multiple senior NRM figures, Cabinet ministers, and MPs have issued public endorsements of Kainerugaba, while PLU has pursued a nationwide signature-collection drive.
President Museveni, in power since 1986, has not issued an independent public statement confirming the endorsement as of this report. The move is expected to intensify debate within the NRM and among the public over succession planning ahead of the next general election cycle.
