President Peter Mutharika says he has achieved 50 percent of what he set out to do in his first year in office saying his administration has made progress in restoring freedom and improving food security.

Mutharika says his two main priorities were to liberate the country and rebuild the economy.

He says food security is among the administration’s key achievements especially for communities that experienced hunger.

However, he acknowledges that progress has been uneven, with some areas moving faster than others.

“I know some people said that achieving food security is not an achievement. I was very surprised because ask those people in Machinga eating Chitedze, or Nyika in Chikwawa and Nsanje; they will tell you that it was an achievement,” says Mutharika.

The Malawi leader is speaking in an interview with the state broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
