KENYA: President William Ruto has officially opened the Boma Yangu Pioneer Affordable Housing Estate in Eldoret and handed over keys to 2,157 new homeowners.
The Sh5.3 billion project sits on about 12 acres in Pioneer Estate and has 15 apartment blocks, each 14 floors high. It comes with 104 shops, a kindergarten, playgrounds, green spaces, a clubhouse and a swimming pool. A junior school, two basketball courts and a football pitch are also planned.
The units are a mix of social, affordable and market-rate homes, ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments.
The handover took place on Sunday evening with fireworks and speeches from the new homeowners and local artisans who worked on the project. Ruto said the estate is meant to offer a full lifestyle, complete with Wi-Fi, a gym and other facilities. Most of the materials used were sourced locally, and Jua Kali artisans supplied thousands of doors and windows.
This is part of the wider Affordable Housing Programme. Ruto’s administration currently has between 273,000 and 301,000 affordable housing units under construction or in various stages of development across the country, while also handing over completed homes to thousands of Kenyans. The long-term target remains two million houses.
