PUTIN REPORTEDLY DELAYING ENERGY TRUCE TO PRESERVE HIS WINTER WEAPON

Negotiations over a mutual halt to strikes on energy infrastructure have reportedly continued through back channels, but Vladimir Putin appears unwilling to conclude an agreement before winter, according to the Financial Times.
Moscow reportedly believes renewed attacks on Ukraine’s power grid during the coldest months could increase pressure on Kyiv, weaken civilian resilience and force Ukraine into concessions it would not otherwise accept.
This provides important context to Donald Trump’s claim that Russia and Ukraine had already agreed to stop attacking energy facilities. No formal agreement has been announced, Russian attacks have continued and President Zelenskyy has made clear that Ukraine will participate only if its partners can guarantee genuine Russian compliance.
The Kremlin may welcome public calls for Ukraine to stop striking Russian refineries, but it has shown no comparable urgency to surrender its own ability to plunge Ukrainian cities into darkness and cold.
That is not a mutual ceasefire. It is an attempt to disarm Ukraine’s leverage while preserving Russia’s winter weapon.
Ukraine has expressed readiness for a reliable, reciprocal and enforceable agreement. Until such guarantees exist, Kyiv cannot reasonably be expected to halt strikes on the infrastructure financing and supplying Russia’s invasion while Moscow prepares to attack the systems keeping Ukrainian civilians alive.
