PUTIN TARGETS NAMIBIA’S URANIUM AS RUSSIA PUSHES INTO NUCLEAR ENERGY
Russia is deepening its strategic engagement with Namibia, and uranium is increasingly at the centre of the relationship.
Moscow and Windhoek have been advancing discussions on a nuclear cooperation agreement that could create a legal framework for future projects involving the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Rosatom-linked companies are already pursuing uranium opportunities in Namibia, with exploration targeted for completion in 2026 and commercial mining projected for 2029, subject to regulatory approvals and safeguards.
Namibia is also exploring nuclear power as a long-term solution to its energy-security challenges, potentially reducing dependence on electricity imports from South Africa while adding value to one of its most important strategic resources.
But the bigger question is geopolitical:
Is Russia positioning itself to control more of Namibia’s uranium-to-energy value chain ?
Namibia insists that it is not choosing sides and that its nuclear ambitions are strictly civilian. At the same time, Russia is aggressively expanding nuclear partnerships across Africa through Rosatom.
For Namibia, the opportunity could mean energy security, industrialisation, technology transfer and greater value from its uranium resources.
But it also raises questions about sovereignty, strategic dependence, environmental protection and who ultimately controls Namibia’s nuclear future.
With the United States also showing interest in Namibia’s civilian nuclear ambitions, the competition for influence over Namibia’s future energy sector may only be beginning.
Namibia has the uranium. The question is: who will control the future built around it ?
