Qatar Denies Detaining Iranian Pilots, Calls Tehran’s Claim “Surprising”

Qatar has categorically denied holding or detaining any Iranian military pilots, following reports from Iran alleging that three Iranian Air Force pilots had been captured by Doha.

Qatari authorities said that Iranian aircraft entered Qatari airspace earlier this year, but the pilots reportedly failed to respond to attempts by Qatari authorities to establish contact.

According to Doha, search-and-rescue teams were subsequently deployed and eventually located the body of one of the Iranian pilots. Qatar said it then contacted Iranian authorities to arrange the transfer and repatriation of the deceased pilot.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, said Doha was surprised by the statements attributed to Iran suggesting that Qatar had detained Iranian pilots

Al Ansari emphasized that Qatar is currently playing a diplomatic role in efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, making the allegations particularly concerning from Doha’s perspective.

The Qatari government also said it had invited Iranian authorities to review and verify the details of the search-and-rescue operation, including the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the pilot. However, according to Al Ansari, Iran has not yet responded to the invitation.

The conflicting accounts have created a new point of tension between Tehran and Doha, with Iran reportedly maintaining that its pilots were taken into Qatari custody, while Qatar insists that it did not arrest or detain any Iranian pilots.

The dispute comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Qatar, which has sought to maintain communication channels with Iran while simultaneously acting as a diplomatic intermediary in efforts to contain the wider regional crisis.

Further clarification from Iranian authorities could be crucial in determining what happened to the Iranian aircraft and their crews, and whether the two sides are referring to the same incident.
