REPUBLICAN LAWMAKER WARNS RUSSIAN DIESEL DEAL WILL FUND PUTIN’S WAR
Senior Republican Congressman Michael McCaul has publicly criticized the decision to lift sanctions on Russian oil, warning that renewed energy revenue will flow directly into the Kremlin’s war machine.
McCaul acknowledged the administration’s desire to lower diesel prices but argued that Congress had already provided the president with significant economic leverage through the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act—leverage intended to pressure Moscow into ending its war through negotiations.
Instead, easing sanctions rewards Russia with renewed revenue while its forces continue attacking Ukrainian cities.
The criticism is especially significant because it comes from within Trump’s own party. McCaul is making the same fundamental argument Ukraine has made: Russian energy is not separate from Russia’s war. The money earned from oil and diesel helps finance the missiles, drones, ammunition and military infrastructure used against Ukrainian civilians.
Lower fuel prices may offer temporary political relief at home. Restoring one of the Kremlin’s most important sources of income could prolong the destruction in Ukraine for far longer.
