RETIRED FSB GENERAL FOUND SHOT DEAD INSIDE MOSCOW APARTMENT

Retired FSB Major General Igor Laptev has been found dead from a gunshot wound to the head inside his Moscow apartment. Russian media have described his death as suicide, but authorities have not publicly confirmed the circumstances.

Laptev, 83, was not an obscure retiree. He fought in Afghanistan before serving in the KGB and later the FSB, specializing in information security. He also worked in Russia’s tax police, served as deputy minister for taxes and duties in the late 1990s and later chaired Informtekhnika, a company producing secure communications systems for Russian government agencies and security services—including the FSB

That background makes his death noteworthy, but it does not prove he was killed. No evidence of foul play, motive or connection to his former intelligence work has been released. There has also been no official account explaining why Russian media reached the suicide conclusion.
