RETIRED JUDGE EDWIN CAMERON WARNS THAT BRINGING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY MAY NOT SOLVE SOUTH AFRICA’S VIOLENT CRIME CRISIS, SAYING HARSHER PUNISHMENT ALONE IS UNLIKELY TO REDUCE MURDER, GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND OTHER SERIOUS OFFENCES DESPITE GROWING PUBLIC DEMANDS FOR TOUGHER ACTION AGAINST CRIMINALS

Former Constitutional Court Judge Edwin Cameron has spoken out against renewed calls for the return of the death penalty in South Africa. According to Cameron, there is little evidence that capital punishment would significantly reduce violent crime or help end the country’s ongoing gender-based violence crisis.

His comments come as many South Africans continue to express frustration over rising crime levels, with some calling for tougher penalties for offenders. Cameron argues that addressing crime requires stronger law enforcement, effective investigations, successful prosecutions and broader social interventions rather than relying solely on the death penalty.

The debate around capital punishment remains highly controversial, with supporters believing it could deter criminals, while opponents argue it does not address the root causes of crime and raises serious human rights concerns.

Do you agree with Edwin Cameron, or should South Africa consider bringing back the death penalty? 🤔👇
