Russia Claims New Countermeasure Against Ukraine’s Flamingo Long-Range Missile
Russia claims it has developed an effective method for countering Ukraine’s Flamingo long-range cruise missile, with Russian sources asserting that the new approach could allow Moscow to intercept a large majority of the missiles launched against Russian targets.
According to the claims, the effectiveness of the countermeasure is linked to the deployment of Russia’s A-50U airborne early-warning and control aircraft. These aircraft are designed to provide long-range radar surveillance, track aerial targets and coordinate air-defense operations.
Russian military sources argue that the A-50U’s ability to detect and track low-flying cruise missiles could significantly improve Russia’s chances of intercepting Flamingo missiles before they reach their intended targets.
The Flamingo, reportedly developed and manufactured in Ukraine by defense company Fire Point, is designed as a long-range cruise missile capable of striking targets at distances of up to 3,000 kilometers, according to Ukrainian claims.
If confirmed independently, the deployment of airborne radar platforms could pose a significant challenge to Ukraine’s ability to conduct deep strikes against targets far beyond the front line.
However, the Russian claim that it can “intercept almost all” Flamingo missiles has not been independently verified, and the actual interception rate remains unclear.
