Russia Deploys Warships to the Baltic Sea Amid Rising Tensions With Europe

Russia has reportedly moved additional warships into the Baltic Sea amid growing tensions between Moscow and European countries over Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” of oil tankers and cargo vessels

According to German newspaper Bild, the modern frigate Admiral Kasatonov has been transferred from Russia’s Northern Fleet to the Baltic Sea. Days earlier, the anti-submarine warfare vessel Admiral Levchenko was also reported to have arrived in the region.

The Admiral Kasatonov is one of Russia’s more modern frigates and is capable of carrying and launching Kalibr cruise missiles and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. The Admiral Levchenko is primarily designed for anti-submarine operations and is equipped with air-defense systems, torpedoes, artillery and helicopters.

The reported deployment comes amid increasingly confrontational rhetoric from the Kremlin toward European countries opposing Russia’s maritime “shadow fleet.” Moscow has used naval vessels to escort some tankers and cargo ships in recent months, according to reports.

The Kremlin has not publicly provided a detailed explanation for the latest movement of the warships.

Maritime security expert Moritz Brake has warned that Moscow’s threats should not simply be dismissed as rhetoric, arguing that they could potentially be followed by concrete actions against European vessels.

The arrival of additional Russian naval assets is therefore being closely watched across the Baltic region, where NATO and Russia are operating in increasingly contested waters.
