Russia Launches Large-Scale Missile and Drone Attack on Kyiv

Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack targeting Kyiv and surrounding areas, involving ballistic missiles and more than 115 drones, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The attack resulted in reports of at least 17–21 people dead and more than 36 people injured, while emergency services continued operations at several affected locations.

Authorities in the Kyiv region declared August 6 a day of mourning, with flags lowered to half-mast and entertainment events suspended across the region.

Ukrainian authorities also reported significant pressure on the country’s air-defense capabilities, stating that none of the Russian ballistic missiles were intercepted during the attack.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said deliveries of interceptor missiles from Western partners, including those used by Patriot air-defense systems, had fallen to around one-third of last year’s level.

The reported reduction in interceptor supplies has raised concerns over Ukraine’s ability to maintain sufficient air-defense coverage against continued missile and drone attacks.
