RUSSIA–UKRAINE WAR — Russia Reportedly Deploys Oreshnik Missile Units to Belarus
Ukraine’s military intelligence service says Russian missile units equipped with the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile system have been deployed to Belarus, raising concerns over Moscow’s ability to conduct strikes against targets across Ukraine from Belarusian territory.
According to the Ukrainian assessment, units of Russia’s 101st Missile Brigade operating the Oreshnik system have been stationed in Belarus. The system was reportedly deployed there around December 17 and placed on full combat readiness by the end of December.
🇧🇾 Despite the deployment, Ukrainian intelligence says it has not detected signs that Belarus is preparing to directly enter the war against Ukraine. Kyiv assesses the immediate risk of Belarusian forces joining Russia’s invasion as low, although Moscow continues to pressure Minsk over the use of Belarusian territory.
The Oreshnik has reportedly been used against Ukraine on several occasions, with its first reported combat use taking place in November 2024. Russia describes the weapon as a highly advanced ballistic missile capable of reaching targets at intermediate ranges.
🇷🇺 President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Western missile-defense systems are unable to reliably intercept the Oreshnik. Ukrainian officials have similarly warned that the weapon presents a significant challenge to existing air-defense capabilities.
The deployment to Belarus could further expand Russia’s strike options and place additional pressure on Ukrainian defenses, particularly because of Belarus’s proximity to northern Ukraine.
