Russia Strikes Western Ukraine Near Polish Border, Triggering Heightened NATO Alert
Russia launched a large-scale drone attack across Ukraine overnight, with strikes reaching western regions near the Polish border and raising fresh security concerns along NATO’s eastern flank.
In Volyn, a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train traveling toward Warsaw, just 2 kilometers from the Polish border. The train crew had been warned of the aerial threat in advance, allowing passengers to evacuate safely, with no casualties reported.
Another Russian drone struck near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, close to Poland, hitting a truck and triggering a fire in the area. The attack temporarily disrupted activity at the crossing and occurred less than a kilometer from Polish territory.
Poland responded by increasing its air-defense readiness and deploying fighter aircraft and other military assets to monitor the situation along its eastern airspace. Ukrainian officials described the strikes near the Polish border as a direct warning to the EU and NATO, as Russia’s expanding long-range drone campaign increasingly reaches areas close to Alliance territory.
The latest attack also highlights Russia’s growing use of faster jet-powered Geran-series drones, including the Geran-5, which can reach speeds of up to 450–600 km/h and pose a greater challenge to short-range air-defense systems.
