RUSSIA WARNS FRANCE OVER PROPOSAL TO EXTEND NUCLEAR DETERRENCE TO ALLIES
Moscow has warned France following French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to explore extending France’s nuclear deterrence to European allies.
Russia described the initiative as “reckless,” with a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson saying:
> “We characterize this French initiative, to put it mildly and very diplomatically, as reckless.”
Moscow said it was not concerned by the prospect of French nuclear capabilities being positioned closer to Russia’s borders, arguing that such deployments could instead make them easier targets for Russian forces in the event of a conflict.
Russian officials also issued a warning to France and its potential partners:
“Take our warnings very seriously.”
The remarks come amid heightened tensions over European security and ongoing debate in France about the role of its nuclear deterrent in protecting European allies.
