Russian Military Officer Killed in Car Bombing in St. Petersburg
A Russian military officer was killed after an explosive device detonated inside or beneath his vehicle in the Shushary area of St. Petersburg on August 27.
Russian investigators confirmed the death of the serviceman and opened a criminal investigation. His wife, who was also in the vehicle, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
Local and Ukrainian media have identified the victim as 43-year-old Sergei Sechkov, reportedly a senior officer of Russia’s 332nd Separate Guards Helicopter Regiment. Russian authorities have not officially released his identity.
Russian media also reported that a 24-year-old woman was suspected of placing an improvised explosive device under the vehicle before fleeing the country. Investigators have reportedly linked the suspect to individuals claiming to represent Ukrainian forces, but Ukraine has not publicly claimed responsibility for the attack.
The bombing adds to a series of attacks targeting Russian military personnel and defence-linked figures inside Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine.
