SANDF troops return from DRC this Friday

The first group of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops will return from the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday, as part of a structured withdrawal announced by Defence Minister Angie Motshekga.

Over 2,000 SANDF personnel have been deployed in the DRC, supporting both MONUSCO and SAMIDRC missions amidst ongoing conflicts, including those with the M23 rebels, which have resulted in 14 soldier deaths earlier this year.

The returning troops will be welcomed at Air Force Base Bloemspruit by Minister Motshekga and military veterans, marking a shift towards diplomatic solutions in the region.

This withdrawal aligns with broader African-led peace efforts, reflecting South Africa’s commitment to regional stability while acknowledging the sacrifices made by its forces.
