Saudi-Led Coalition Vows Strong Response After Houthis Announce Naval Blockade
The spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, has issued a firm warning following the Iran-backed Houthi movement’s announcement of a naval blockade targeting vessels bound for Saudi Arabian ports.
Responding to the Houthis’ declaration, Al-Maliki said:
“We will protect our commercial shipping transiting the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and we will respond firmly and forcefully to any threats originating from any location.”
His remarks signal Saudi Arabia’s determination to safeguard international maritime traffic through the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
The warning comes after the Houthis formally declared that ships sailing to Saudi ports would be targeted, a move that has heightened fears of renewed conflict in the Red Sea and broader disruption to global trade and energy supplies.
Security analysts warn that any attacks on commercial shipping or attempts to enforce a blockade could significantly impact international commerce, as millions of barrels of oil and large volumes of global cargo transit the Bab al-Mandab each day.
The exchange of threats marks another sharp escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, raising concerns that years of relative calm between the two sides may be giving way to a renewed phase of military confrontation with wider regional consequences.
