Questions are being raised about South Africa’s defence relationship with Iran after claims emerged that Iranian personnel may have received drone-related training linked to South African military facilities
South Africa and Iran have maintained diplomatic and defence cooperation for several years. In 2016, the two countries signed agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in a number of sectors, including defence. However, many details of these agreements have never been made public.
More recently, allegations surrounding Iran’s participation in South African military activities have sparked political debate. The Department of Defence confirmed that an investigation was launched after concerns were raised about the handling of Iran’s involvement in a military exercise.
At this stage, there is no publicly confirmed evidence that Iranian drone pilots were trained at Overberg Air Force Base. While the claim has circulated widely on social media and has been repeated by some commentators, it has not been officially verified.
The controversy has prompted renewed calls from politicians and members of the public for greater transparency about South Africa’s defence agreements with Iran and the country’s broader military relationships with foreign governments.
