South African Police Arrest 717 Wanted Suspects in Overnight Shanela Operation
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, has led another successful high-density crime crackdown in Johannesburg.
The latest #OperationShanela II was conducted in the SAPS Alexandra policing precinct and resulted in hundreds of arrests across multiple categories.
During the operation, police arrested:
– 24 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol
– 21 undocumented illegal immigrants
– 4 suspects for possession of drugs
– 2 suspects for tampering with essential infrastructure
Law enforcement also shut down 4 liquor outlets for violating the Liquor Act. A Toyota Quantum was impounded after officials discovered it had a tampered engine number.
In a major boost, Gauteng detectives arrested 717 wanted suspects overnight. Of those, 137 were wanted for crimes against women and children.
Lt Gen Mthombeni commended the multidisciplinary teams involved and reaffirmed SAPS’ commitment to intensifying operations to ensure safer communities across Gauteng.
