SOUTH AFRICANS STAGE PROTEST OUTSIDE DURBAN REFUGEE CENTRE, DEMAND GOVERNMENT PRIORITISE CITIZENS OVER ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

A group of South Africans gathered outside the Department of Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre on Dr Yusuf Dadoo (formerly Che Guevara) Road in Durban, calling for operations at the facility to be halted.

The protesters argued that government authorities are placing greater focus on migrants and asylum seekers while many South Africans continue to face challenges related to jobs, housing, healthcare and public services. The demonstration took place as large numbers of foreign nationals were seen queuing outside the centre to apply for asylum and other immigration-related services.

Police officers were deployed to monitor the situation and maintain order as tensions rose between demonstrators and people waiting outside the facility. Protest leaders said they wanted government to strengthen border management, review immigration policies and ensure that the needs of South African citizens remain a priority.

The demonstration has sparked debate on social media, with some supporting the protesters’ concerns about unemployment and service delivery, while others argued that asylum seekers and refugees are protected under both South African and international law.

No major incidents or arrests were immediately reported during the protest, but the event once again highlighted the growing national debate around immigration, border security and access to public resources in South Africa.

What is your view on this issue? Should South Africa tighten immigration controls or maintain its current asylum system?
