SOUTH AFRICA’S NAVI PILLAY WINS 2026 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, POCKETS US$1.2 MILLION

South African human rights lawyer and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has been named the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award in Oslo on Friday, October 9, recognising the 85-year-old for her decades of dedication to promoting human rights, international justice and accountability for atrocities.

Pillay will receive a cash prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately US$1.2 million, alongside a gold medal and diploma.

The internationally respected jurist has held several prominent positions, including serving as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

She has also played a significant role in investigating alleged violations of international humanitarian law, including during the conflict in Gaza.

Pillay becomes the fifth South African to receive the prestigious award, joining notable figures such as former President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious international honours, recognising individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to peace and the protection of human rights.

The award will be formally presented in Oslo, Norway, on December 10, marking the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, who established the Nobel Prizes.
