SPAIN, IRELAND, BELGIUM AND THE NETHERLANDS PUSH EU SANCTIONS ON ISRAELI SETTLEMENT TRADE
Spain, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands are reportedly campaigning within the European Union for sanctions targeting trade linked to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
The four countries argue that continued Israeli settlement expansion on Palestinian land requires a stronger response from the EU, including potential restrictions on exports and commercial activity connected to the settlements.
The diplomatic effort is being led by Ireland, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. The initiative seeks to build wider support among EU member states for implementing punitive measures against Israel over its continued settlement policies in the Palestinian territories.
The proposed measures could further intensify pressure on Israel and deepen divisions within the EU over how strongly the bloc should respond to Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.
