Student Leaders Speak Against Tribalism

STUDENT LEADERS SPEAK AGAINST TRIBALISM

STUDENT Union leaders from the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Evelyn Hone College stood as one and spoke in unison to urge political leaders to desist from promoting tribalism and other activities that will divide the national and hinder national development.

The student leaders have also disclosed plans of developing a national movement in order to curb tribalism and and threats to the nations unity.

UNZA Student Union vice president Evelyn Mkandawire said youths are concerned about the divisive nature likely to disrupt the country’s “One Zambia, one nation motto”

She further called on youths to join the anti-tribalism movement and become action oriented to work with leaders on best ways to develop the country rather than “criticising and support things that will not move this country forward.”

Evelyn Hone College President Reagan Mpundu said there are political leaders that are trying to take advantage of the transfer of Former Presidential spokesperson Anthony to Tanzania as deputy high commissioner by insinuating that he was transferred due to his tribe so that they can gain political milage.

“We will in the next few days petition the head of state over the need for law to be strengthened against those who preach tribalism,” Mpundu added.

And UNZASU academic minister Josephat Nyirongo said if their is political instability in the country, young people are more vulnerable to political instability, hence leaders should play clean politics so that the youths could also emulate them.

Nyirongo therefore urged the public to reject and condemn any political leader that wants to sow the seed of division.

Meanwhile UNZASU information minister Sydney Mushili urged Government to intensify and work around the clock to curb their past and present corruption.

And UNZASU minister of finance Ndanji Mfula commended Government for providing and open civil space where youths can air out their views and for the opportunities they have provided this far.
