TANZANIA VICE PRESIDENT EMMANUEL NCHIMBI RESIGNS
Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has announced his resignation from office and retirement from active politics and public service, effective September 4, 2026.
In a statement, Dr. Nchimbi said he had formally submitted his resignation to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, citing provisions of Tanzania’s Constitution. He explained that when he was appointed Vice President in August 2025, he pledged to serve for as long as the President required his services and to willingly step aside whenever she decided a change was necessary.
Dr. Nchimbi says he believes President Hassan intends to make changes in the vice-presidential position and that his decision is in keeping with the commitment he made upon taking office.
The outgoing Vice President thanked President Hassan, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, and the people of Tanzania for the trust and support they gave him during his tenure.
His departure comes after just over a year in office and opens the way for President Hassan to nominate a new Vice President.
