Tensions Escalate as China, Philippines Trade Blame After Second Thomas Shoal Clash

Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated after a new confrontation between Philippine military vessels and the China Coast Guard near Second Thomas Shoal, with both sides accusing each other of provoking the incident.

The Philippines said Chinese personnel used wooden batons to assault a Philippine Navy serviceman, causing a head injury, and damaged a Philippine inflatable boat during the encounter. The Philippine military has also released video it says shows the clash.

China, however, rejected the allegations, claiming that Philippine vessels deliberately rammed Chinese ships and initiated the confrontation..

The incident comes ahead of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, where the South China Sea dispute is expected to be one of the key topics on the agenda.

The competing claims from both sides have not been independently verified.
