Thabo Mbeki Says Africa’s Biggest Challenge Is Producing Honest and Accountable Leaders Who Put Citizens Before Personal Enrichment
Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has argued that many of Africa’s problems will remain unresolved unless the continent succeeds in developing a new generation of ethical, capable and accountable leaders.
Speaking on leadership and governance in Africa, Mbeki said citizens must play a central role in demanding better leadership by holding elected officials accountable for their promises and performance. He stressed that leaders do not emerge in isolation but are shaped by the societies and circumstances from which they come.
Drawing on Africa’s liberation history, Mbeki referenced figures such as Kwame Nkrumah and other leaders who dedicated themselves to the struggle for freedom and national development. He noted that while liberation movements produced leaders willing to sacrifice for their people, modern Africa faces a different challenge: ensuring that those in power remain committed to public service rather than self-enrichment.
According to Mbeki, corruption, personal enrichment and poor governance continue to undermine progress across the continent. He argued that African leaders must be willing to speak honestly to one another when mistakes are made instead of remaining silent for diplomatic reasons.
Mbeki emphasized that African countries are interconnected and that poor leadership in one nation can have consequences beyond its borders. For that reason, he believes the quality of leadership remains the most critical issue facing the continent today.
He concluded that Africa must find practical ways to produce leaders who are accountable, principled and focused on improving the lives of ordinary citizens, warning that without such leadership, many of the continent’s major political, economic and social challenges will remain difficult to solve.
