The case of the revocation of passports; Osanyoza N’gwena Matako Akali Mumanzi

The Government’s revocation of passports of individuals resident abroad has elicited both criticism and support from citizens.
Among those whose passports have been cancelled are persons such as Emmanuel Mwamba, who is currently resident in the United States as a fugitive after absconding on court bail in connection with a case involving the alleged assault of a young female police officer.
Others residing abroad as fugitives include Binwell Mpundu, Emmanuel ‘JJ’ Banda, and Kaiser Zulu. Mr Banda has publicly called for the assassination of the President and the extermination of the Tonga people.
Mr Mwamba has openly called for rebellion against the Government while conducting a sustained and slanderous campaign against it. Mr Mpundu fled the country following accusations of militia involvement and has also faced various charges before the courts.
What is indisputable is that a passport is a Government document. The State reserves the right to withdraw it where it considers the national interest to be under threat. This does not, however, preclude an affected individual abroad from applying for an emergency travel document at the nearest Zambian Embassy.
Viewed either way, the matter recalls the local adage: “Osanyoza ngwena matako akali m’manzi”, do not mock a crocodile when your buttocks are still within the reach of its jaws
