KABWATA constituency parliamentary aspiring candidate Danny Yenga has hailed the newly launched Tonse Alliance Manifesto describing it as a pro – poor and fits into the vision of late Republican President Michael Chilufya Sata.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch with Smart Eagles in Lusaka today, Mr. Yenga said it is gratifying that the Manifesto has also prioritised the empowerment of women and the youth, a move that will help reduce poverty in the country.
He said women in Zambia continue to face structural barriers that limit their full participation in the economy and public life.
” The vision of the Tonse Alliance reaffirms that women are not beneficiaries of development, they are also drivers of development. Most of our women in the country have been left to low paying informal work, with limited access to high value jobs,” Mr. Yenga said.
And Mr. Yenga said the acknowledgement of the Information and Communications technology – ICT sector in the Manifesto is key because the digital economy has become a major engine of development and growth.
” If you look at chapter 10 of the Manifesto it clearly speaks to the fact that ‘countries that master data,automation and digital services achieve more efficient government, faster innovation, and stronger access to global markets. And if you look at our country, digital transformation is the only way to move from a resource based economy to a knowledge driven upper – middle income economy, ” Mr. Yenga said.
On the issue of energy Mr. Yenga said energy insecurity has become a major hindrance on GDP growth, which has resulted in high production costs and eroding investor confidence.
“Chapter 9 of the Tonse Manifesto has clearly outlined how to deal with the energy crisis. If you look at the Manifesto, Tonse Alliance seeks to move from hydrology -dominance to diversified baseload and flexible generation.
It also seeks to allign generation expansion with transmission, storage,and market reform,not isolated projects,” He said.
