VATICAN CALLS IN ZAMBIAN BISHOPS AMID STATE HOUSE FEUD
… as Archbishop Alick Banda’s arrest over State vehicle sparks standoff between Church and State House
By DAVID KANDUZA
THE Holy See has officially intervened in Zambia’s deepening church-State crisis, summoning Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) president Archbishop Ignatius Chama to Rome for urgent consultations.
The extraordinary directive from the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, headed by chief diplomat Cardinal Pietro Parolin, follows the dramatic arrest of controversial Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda.
The arrest had ignited a bitter political and ecclesiastical firestorm across the southern African nation.
The crosscontinental drama centres on a blue Toyota Hilux.
Law enforcement investigators at the Zambian Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) allege the vehicle was unlawfully stripped from the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and gifted to Archbishop Banda.
After spending a night in a Lusaka prison cell, the high-ranking prelate was released on a US$4,000 bail, maintaining his innocence ahead of his trial scheduled for November.
The ZCCB launched a blistering pastoral letter, fiercely defending Bishop Banda and re-framing the criminal investigation as ‘State-sponsored persecution’ designed to muzzle the Church’s prophetic voice ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The political response from State House was immediate and sharp.
Chief communications specialist Clayson Hamasaka rejected the bishops’ claims, cautioning that wrapping a secular court case in a holy cassock risked destabilising public order and undermining equal justice.
Compounding the friction, a visible diplomatic fracture had emerged within the Church’s own ranks.
While local bishops rallied behind Bishop Banda, the Pope’s official envoy to Zambia, Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Gian Luca Perici, chose to practice quiet boardroom diplomacy.
The Nuncio publicly visited Government administrators to laud cordial bilateral ties, pointedly breaking away from the combative rhetoric of the local clergy.
Faced with an escalating public feud and an unprecedented reputational threat to its fastest-growing continental territory, the Holy See decided it had seen enough.
Rome had now moved the chess pieces.
Behind the thick walls of the Vatican, senior officials were reportedly weighing the potential recall of Archbishop Banda to defuse the national crisis.
Archbishop Chama’s flight to Rome will not be a pastoral courtesy visit.
He is walking straight into a high-stakes diplomatic sorting room, where the global Church must decide how to balance its moral mandate with the secular rule of law.

Please stop lying and being dramatic.
If you are craving drama in yowa life, go to Kafue Roundabout during peak hours. Or go to Devils street in Matero, any time of day.
There is no stand off or crisis between the Catholic church and GRZ.
There is a Catholic priest being prosecuted (as an individual) for his part in the theft of a government assets.
Ideally the same Catholic priest should step down from religious duties until he is cleared by the court. If he doesn’t or the mother body doesn’t pull him off the job, this chap will drag the Catholic church into serious credibility with it’s membership and other observers.
As for Chama, we can only speculate, but he may have been called to Rome for a formal reprimand. Who in their right mind takes sides in a matter before the courts?
Persecutors of the Catholic Church in Zambia are jumping on their heads thinking the Head of ZCCB, His Grace, Most Rev Ignatius Chama has been summoned to the Vatican over the Archbishop of Lusaka Diocese, His Grace Most Rev Dr Alick Banda.
Bishop Chama is in Rome for a special Meeting called by
Pope Leo XIV convening the presidents of the world’s bishops’ conferences and Eastern Catholic church leaders for a closed-door meeting at the Vatican’s Paul VI Audience Hall.

The Persecutors of the Catholic Church can continue hallucinating. His Grace, Most Rev Archbishop Dr Alick Banda is not going anywhere.
He will continue being Archbishop of Lusaka Diocese for as long as His life allows.
The Catholic Church doesn’t Reward Persecutors…The 2000 years of Church History know how to treat Persecutors of the Church.
Catholic church history is not anything to gloat about. A lot of people were burnt at the stake, literally, because they diverted from then accepted Catholic Church doctrine. Even believing that the earth was round attracted deadly sanctions from the Catholic Church.
There is a very dark side to this history.
As for the Archbishop’s case, let it be heard in an open court so we, the citizens, can form our own opinions based on the evidence adduced.
And the reprimand cant take place on the sidelines of the meeting? Quit thinking you kmow it all.
All manner of salutation for a car thief? The man has a carnal mind and that is what got in to this mess. How many others Bishops in Zambia have found themselves in such a situation? Milingo and even him his carnal nature too the better part of him but he did the right thing. Stepped aside to live his life as he saw fit.
