TI-Z responds to Chinese Embassy: Just act on the corruption, political interference and regulatory capture in Chinese mining
Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has responded to China’s ‘indignation’ after accusing the organisation of exaggerating isolated negative issues, and making groundless accusations against Chinese investors.
In a statement today, TI-Z acting executive director Raymond Mutale said China must simply own up and act on the report issued by the organisation.
He said TI-Z was concerned with the statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Zambia on its Facebook page, in response to the organisation’s publication of the study report entitled “Zambia’s 3 million metric tonnes of copper target, mitigating governance risks associated with Chinese mining.
He said it was their considered view that the Embassy did not take their time to read the entire report as it would have been clear that the publication neither downplays nor denigrates the role of Chinese mining enterprises in Zambia.
Mutale said the study established that four large scale Chinese mining companies approximately accounted for 25 percent of government revenue in 2024 and that over 44 percent investment commitments in the mining sector between 2024 and 2031 were associated with Chinese entities.
However, Mutale said TI-Z wanted to corrected the narrative the Embassy was seeking to drive, as the study was conducting via scientific methods and was supported by strong evidence.
He said the same included corruption and fronting of citizens in land acquisition, political interference and regulatory capture, including threats and bribery during inspections and monitoring and information suppression infflue over media narratives.
