 ELECTION WATCH | NRPUP Candidate, 3 Others Sought Over Alleged Voter-Card Scheme

CHAMA, Sunday, 9 August 2026 — Police in Eastern Province say NRPUP-Tonse Pamodzi Alliance aspiring councillor Jackson Chilembo and three other people are on the run following allegations involving attempts to obtain voters’ cards from residents in Sitwe, Chama District.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the suspects were allegedly offering villagers K20 and one-kilogram packets of coarse salt in exchange for their voters’ cards.

The allegations emerge just four days before Zambia’s August 13 General Election, when scrutiny around voter intimidation, inducements and protection of electoral documents is intensifying.

The matter remains a police allegation at this stage. Chilembo and the three other suspects have not been convicted, and their response to the accusations was not immediately available.
