Transformation of a Catholic Priest

Why I chose a Life of Celibacy

Dr. Given Mutinta is a Zambian Catholic priest who has transitioned his career as an academic, researcher, and public political commentator.

He is also a body builder as a side hobby.

He recently came under the spotlight for his incisive articles under “Givo News”.

UPND couldn’t believe that a priest from Monze would be a serious critic against President Hakainde Hichilema to the extent that they deemed him as pseudonym for Dr. Sishuwa Sishuwa.

He remains a senior lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in South Africa.

Dr. Given Mutinta Writes;

Why I Chose a Life of Celibacy

“For much of my early adulthood, I walked a path less traveled – strictly celibate until turning 34 in 2008.”

“After about ten years of exploring new chapters, a bold return to celibacy followed in 2019.”

“There are now 41 years under my belt of being celibate and this choice has shaped every aspect of my life since.”

“Looking back, it becomes clear how celibacy can serve as both anchor and launchpad for an extraordinary transformation”.

“Without the constant noise and distraction of romantic and sexual relationships, my own thoughts once again ring true. Desires and passions once hidden beneath the surface come to light”.

“The emotional landscape become clearer – there is a deeper understanding of what genuinely makes me tick, which goals ignite my spirit, and which values are never to be compromised.”

“There are no more emotional rollercoasters that often come with relationships.”

“Celibacy brings a steady kind of peace – a calm and resilience that weathers life’s storms without being pulled this way and that by someone else’s moods or expectations.”

“With no romantic drama or obligations to split my attention, an intense, almost laser-like focus emerges for work and personal projects – gym workouts, research, book and journal article writing, and research business consultations.”

“My productivity soars enabling me to walk my postgraduate journey twice, from Honors to Doctor of Philosophy, new hobbies started, and even dreams previously left on the shelf for years are quickly tackled, securing a future not only for myself but for those whose lives are intertwined with my own.”

“There is something liberating about not having to navigate the minefield of relationship expectations. No need to compromise routines or sacrifice weekends. The relief from potential conflicts and misunderstandings is a breath of fresh air.”

“Celibacy opens doors in the spiritual journey. With more time for reflection, meditation, prayer, and reading, beliefs deepen and a stronger connection to the inner self is forged.”

“A sense of justice and peace deepens, with no fear except of being defeated for standing up for what is right.”

“Philosophies and spiritual practices, once overshadowed by the demands of a relationship, flourish -there is pride in a personal relationship with both self and God.”

“On a practical note, celibacy erases worries about sexually transmitted infections or unplanned pregnancies. I have never had a sexually transmitted infection, nor slept with someone with a body count of more than two.”

“With celibacy there is no need to worry about spiritual husbands or wives or ending up in a serial sexual network with your partner’s past partners.”

“The peace of mind is invaluable, allowing for a focus on well-being without anxiety or uncertainty.”

“Above all, celibacy grants unmatched independence.”

“Every decision is mine alone; whether moving cities, changing careers, buying property, purchasing a dream car, or traveling on a whim.”

“Life becomes a canvas, and I am the sole artist painting each stroke.”

“Choosing celibacy twice has granted me clarity, stability, and freedom that might never have been found otherwise.”

“For me, it has been a thrilling journey – one that empowers me to live boldly – spiritually, physically and emotionally, discovering my true self, and designing a life that authentically reflects who I am.”

“There is fulfilment in knowing the purpose of my life through the realm of celibacy.”
