Trump Addresses North Korea’s Nuclear Weapons as He Highlights Relationship With Kim Jong Un
U.S. President Donald Trump has played down concerns over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program while highlighting what he described as his close relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump was asked why Iran should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons when North Korea already possesses nuclear weapons and continues to expand its arsenal.
In response, Trump pointed to his personal relationship with Kim and said he is “the only person in the whole world” whom Kim Jong Un likes, referring to himself.
Trump’s comments come amid continued international debate over the different approaches taken toward North Korea’s existing nuclear arsenal and Iran’s nuclear program.
However, Trump’s remarks do not amount to a formal U.S. authorization for North Korea to possess or expand nuclear weapons. North Korea’s nuclear weapons program remains subject to international sanctions and longstanding U.S. and UN non-proliferation efforts.
