Trump announces diesel deal with Putin as US moves to ease fuel prices

U.S. President Donald Trump says he has reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply diesel to American and global markets, in a major shift in Washington’s energy policy amid surging fuel prices.

Trump said Russia would immediately provide more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel, followed by another 500,000 tons in November and additional shipments thereafter. He also outlined plans for several million more tons, depending on the condition of Russia’s refineries.

The announcement followed a phone call between the two leaders, during which the Kremlin said they discussed the war in Ukraine, the situation in Iran and broader bilateral relations.

The U.S. Treasury Department subsequently issued a temporary license easing sanctions on certain Russian diesel shipments through April 2027.

The move has drawn criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who warned that additional Russian energy revenue could help Moscow sustain its war effort. Analysts also caution that the deal may have only a limited impact on global fuel prices.
