Trump Calls Brazil Election “Very Strange,” Says Bolsonaro Family Treated Unfairly

President Donald Trump refused to endorse Flávio Bolsonaro’s claim that he is the rightful president of Brazil but left little doubt about his view of the vote that put Lula back in power.

Asked if he agrees with Bolsonaro’s declaration, Trump said, “Well, I’m not going to make a comment about that, but I know that we gave him a pass to come into the country, so we’ll see. But I won’t get involved. It was a very strange election, that’s for sure.”

When pressed on why the United States granted entry to Bolsonaro and his family, the president was blunt. “I thought they were treated very unfairly. I thought they were treated very unfairly. And I didn’t take a position in the election, as you know, but when I see something that’s inappropriate, I bring it up. I thought he and his family were treated very unfairly.”

Trump added that he has not spoken to Bolsonaro.

The remarks came as the defeated Brazilian candidate arrived in Miami after defying a court order to surrender his passports and publicly asserting that the election had been stolen from him.
