President Donald Trump has filed an emergency motion to stop the BBC from gaining access to confidential financial records tied to his business empire.
The legal filing comes after a judge approved the BBC’s request to subpoena records from the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, covering documents dating back to Jan. 1, 2023.
According to Trump’s attorney, the subpoena seeks confidential tax, ownership and financial records for about 400 entities, warning that once those records are turned over, “that disclosure could not be undone.”
The dispute stems from the BBC documentary “Trump: A Second Chance?” Trump claims the program misleadingly edited his speech to make it appear he encouraged the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. While the BBC apologized for the edit, it is fighting the lawsuit and argues U.S. courts do not have jurisdiction over the British broadcaster.
If the emergency motion is denied, the BBC could obtain records related to Trump’s crypto and stock profits, along with financial transactions involving hundreds of businesses tied to his family-managed trust.
