Trump Pushes Advisers to Arrange Face-to-Face Summit With Kim Jong Un This Fall

U.S. President Donald Trump is pressing his advisers to arrange a face-to-face summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as early as this autumn, potentially in November, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials.

Trump has reportedly discussed the possibility of holding the meeting on the sidelines of his upcoming trip to Asia, as Washington explores another direct engagement with Pyongyang.

In an apparent effort to create a more favorable atmosphere ahead of the potential summit, Trump recently ordered the Pentagon to significantly reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, describing the drills as “costly” and “hostile.”

A new Trump-Kim meeting would mark a renewed attempt to revive high-level diplomacy between Washington and Pyongyang, after previous negotiations over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs failed to produce a lasting agreement.
