Turkish and Somali forces have rescued a cargo vessel that was hijacked by pirates.
The joint operation freed the ship and its crew.
This is what Turkey’s extended military presence in Somalia is actually producing. Not just training exercises and base agreements on paper. Real operations. Real results. A ship that was taken is now free because two militaries worked together effectively.
Piracy in the Horn of Africa was a major global crisis in the late 2000s and early 2010s. International naval coalitions including from the EU, NATO, and individual nations patrolled the waters and eventually reduced incidents significantly. But the underlying conditions that produce piracy, poverty, lack of economic opportunity, weak governance along Somalia’s coastline, never fully disappeared.
The threat never went away. It just waited.
Turkey’s presence in Somalia has been different from other foreign military engagements on the continent. Turkish forces train Somali soldiers who fight under Somali command. Turkish hospitals and schools operate alongside the military mission. And now Turkish forces are conducting joint anti-piracy operations with the Somali military they helped build.
That is capacity transfer with visible results.
For the crew on that cargo ship, the details of who trained who and which alliance framework applies matter less than the fact that they are free tonight.
