Turkey Reportedly Helps Syria Build New Air Defense Shield
Turkey is reportedly helping Syria develop a new, layered air-defense network, in what could mark a major shift in the region’s military balance.
New images reportedly show Turkish air-defense systems being delivered to Syria, including the SİPER and HİSAR families of surface-to-air missile systems.
According to reports, the plan goes beyond the transfer of individual weapons. Ankara is reportedly seeking to help strengthen Syria’s air defenses first, followed by efforts to rebuild and expand the Syrian Air Force.
Turkey is also reported to maintain around 160 military bases and positions across Syria, while separate plans have reportedly been discussed to expand the Syrian Army toward 250,000 personnel.
If confirmed, the developments would represent a significant transformation of Syria’s military capabilities and could have major implications for the strategic balance between Turkey, Syria and Israel.
The reported expansion of Syrian air defenses could, in particular, complicate Israel’s long-standing freedom of action over Syrian airspace and increase tensions between Ankara and Tel Aviv.
