U.S. and Ukraine Explore S-300 Modernization to Ease Patriot Missile Shortage
The United States and Ukraine are reportedly working on a program to modernize Ukraine’s Soviet-era S-300 air-defense missiles, aiming to help offset shortages of U.S.-supplied Patriot interceptors.
Retired U.S. Army Colonel Robert Hamilton said the modernization effort could begin toward the end of 2026, although production would initially be limited to roughly 100 to a few hundred missiles per year, according to Oboronka.
The initiative could provide Ukraine with an additional source of air-defense interceptors as Kyiv faces growing demand for systems capable of countering Russian missile and drone attacks.
